S. Korean soldier accidentally fires machine gun at inter-Korean border

Korea Herald27-04-2025

A South Korean soldier at the inter-Korean border accidentally fired a machine gun toward North Korea last week, prompting the military to air broadcasts to notify the North of the mistake, military officials said Sunday.
The accident happened at around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday when the soldier mistakenly fired a single round from the K6 heavy machine gun from a guard post inside the Demilitarized Zone separating the two Koreas in Cheorwon County, about 70 kilometers north of Seoul, according to the officials.
The South Korean military immediately notified North Korea of the incident by airing broadcasts, the officials said, adding they presume the round did not reach the North's side as it went through a reinforced door, likely slowing it down.
The South Korean military said it has yet to detect any unusual signs of North Korean military activity. (Yonhap)

Chef at popular Gangnam restaurant accused of raping employee

A chef at a well-known Japanese restaurant in Seoul's Gangnam district is under police investigation on suspicion of raping a female employee, local media reported Friday. According to broadcaster MBC, the chef is accused of sexually assaulting the employee, who was intoxicated at the time, on May 7. Security camera footage shows the woman staggering and collapsing on the street. The chef is then seen holding her by the hand and leading her away. The woman later told police the chef had expressed romantic interest in her since her job interview. She said she has no recollection of how she ended up in a hotel room, but believes she was sexually assaulted. She also claimed the abuse began just one week after she started working at the restaurant. 'When I was cleaning the bathroom, someone silently came and locked the door. It started again. Every day,' she told the reporter at MBC. She reported the incident to police on May 24. The Gangnam Police Station obtained hotel security footage and summoned the chef on charges of quasi-rape, a charge in Korean law equivalent to rape that involves a victim who is incapacitated or unable to resist. During the investigation, additional allegations emerged that the chef routinely hurled verbal abuse and physically assaulted staff members. Audio recordings provided by former employees captured the chef yelling, 'How many times do I have to tell you? Do you want to be hit? Are you not concentrating? Concentrate!' followed by sounds suggesting physical violence. One former staff member claimed the chef threatened retaliation if anyone reported him to authorities. 'He said if we go to the police, he would make sure we could never work in the industry again, using his four lawyers,' the former employee told MBC. The chef has denied the rape allegation but has not responded to the abuse claims, according to reports.

Suspect in murder of 2 brothers, stabbing of 2 others indicted

ANSAN, South Korea, June 12 (Yonhap) -- The suspect in the killing of two brothers and stabbing of two others was indicted Thursday on charges of murder and attempted murder, the prosecution said. Cha Cheol-nam, a 56-year-old Chinese national of Korean ethnicity, is accused of killing the brothers of the same Chinese-Korean background in Siheung, just southwest of Seoul, last month. He is also accused of stabbing a convenience store owner and his landlord in separate incidents, causing them serious injuries. The Ansan branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors Office said Cha was indicted on the murder and attempted murder charges while remaining under arrest. During questioning by investigation agencies, Cha claimed to have committed the crime out of anger after the brothers failed to repay him a loan of 30 million won (US$21,500). He also said the convenience store owner had spoken ill of him, while the landlord had looked down on him. Cha began planning the murders six months beforehand by altering his weapon to make it comfortable for use and getting a prescription for sleeping pills to give to the brothers, according to the prosecution.
