This special G-Class is less Chelsea, more tractor - and I love it
Some modifiers and restomodders of original Land Rover Defenders make similar mistakes, fitting weird LED headlight units, modern paint finishes and wheels that look far, far too big. The 'Stronger than the 1980s' G-Class is our old gent slipping back into his brogues and tweed. He looks right again.
I feel like we've talked around this retro subject before. Many car designers don't like retro designs, because they're in the business of making new things, not rehashing old ones.
But the G-Class isn't a new car and some of the aesthetic options you can put on one feel like that white rendering and grey window framing people seem intent on putting on previously characterful houses.
Fashion aside, I think this new G-Class just looks more authentic, more fit for purpose. If one is going to have a big 4x4, why fit wheels and tyres that don't suit off-roading and paint it such that you wouldn't dare take it near a thorn bush?
In the past year, I've spent time in a new Land Rover Defender 130 on big, shiny black alloys and with satin black paint and in an Ineos Grenadier with neither of those things.
The Defender is the better car to drive: it's calmer, more relaxing, more comfortable, quieter, brilliantly capable off road and tows for Britain. But I felt sufficiently less conspicuous in the Grenadier that, spec for spec, it's the one I'd have.
Maybe I've never reached a stage in life where I don't care what other people think. But cars, particularly those bought for a want and not a need, do say something about their owners, don't they?
This G-Class looks like it has been specced and built and is owned for the reasons it was first intended. And I'd rather drive that, even if it's a slightly 'worse' car than a regular one, which it might be.
Those tyres will probably give it less directional stability and certainly squidgier steering, and as they're probably heavier might not even improve the ride. Does that make me shallow? Oh well.

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher's red 1997 Bentley Turbo R has gone on sale priced at £1.2 million. Despite not being able to drive, Gallagher was ordered to pay a court £1,000 and was handed six penalty points in April 2023, for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover, when it was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Speaking about his driving lesson in the 1990s, Gallagher told Ball in 2023: 'I have had one driving lesson in the 90s and I was driving round a housing estate in Slough and she (the instructor) said to me, 'if you just indicate and pull over here' then I pulled over. 'She got out the car she said, 'I'll be back in a minute', she came out with her mum, she drove me to her house. 'Then the local comprehensive bell went and they all came out. 'This is at the height of Oasis-mania and I was like, 'never, never again'.' Gallagher began his career in the 1990s with Oasis, who he formed alongside his brother singer Liam Gallagher. The band has gone on to have eight UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, and is best known for songs such as Wonderwall, Rock 'N' Roll Star and Live Forever. The guitarist formed the High Flying Birds after Oasis's initial break-up in 2009, who have gone on to have four UK number one albums.

Revealed: Lewis Hamilton APOLOGISED off-camera to Sky Sports presenter after terse interview following Spanish GP - where Ferrari star made a brutal admission about his team
Lewis Hamilton issued an off-air apology to Sky Sports presenter Rachel Brookes following his downbeat interview following the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday. The Ferrari driver came home in seventh but was bumped up one place after Max Verstappen careered into George Russell, an incident which saw him demoted down to 10th. Unable to keep up with the two McLarens and Verstappen, Hamilton was told to let Charles Leclerc pass him early in the race, giving his team-mate a leg up as he went on to finish third. Hamilton's frustrations were increased when he was passed by Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg on the penultimate lap of the race. The 40-year-old, who joined Ferrari on a £40million-deal this year, was visibly frustrated when interviewed by Brookes for Sky Sports after the race. Pressed on his comment over team radio that there was 'something wrong' with his car, and for his immediate reaction to the race, Hamilton replied: 'Not particularly, it was not a great day. The strategy was good, the team did a great job. Just, that's it.' Brookes then told Hamilton: 'I hate seeing you in this mood.' Hamilton quickly responded, replying: 'Well what do you want me to say? I had a really bad day and I've got nothing to say. 'It was a difficult day, I've got nothing else to add to it. There's no point explaining it. It's not your fault, I've just not got anything to say.' Brookes admitted she hopes Ferrari will be able to find a fix for his woes, but Hamilton said: 'I'm sure they won't, the answer is probably just me.' Sky Sports commentator David Croft, speaking on T he Fast and The Curious podcast, has now revealed Hamilton had apologised to Brookes off-camera for the nature of the interview. '[Lewis Hamilton] was really down on himself, and no one likes to see that because at the end of the day, whether you're a fan or not, Lewis Hamilton is the greatest racing driver we've ever seen,' Croft said. 'Statistically, he is the greatest. I think he's the greatest even without the stats. He wears his heart on his sleeve and should be applauded for that because it does a lot of good when he wears his heart on his sleeve. 'He did apologise to Rachel Brookes for being so down in the dumps off camera. He said, "I'm really sorry about that, I'm just so down". 'And that just shows the extent that he really was down. He's not putting this on for the cameras, trust me. And once again, it's right after the race. He's not had time for a debrief. He's not had time to have a chat with his race engineer. 'So he probably didn't know the extent of whatever damage the car had at the time he spoke to Rachel. 'And he probably didn't realise that it was the car that was hindering him more so than his driving in that one. 'And look, when you're in a Ferrari and you're overtaken by Nico Hülkenberg, albeit in a Ferrari-powered Sauber, you're going to question, 'Is it me really? Am I doing something wrong here?' Because it just didn't go for him really from the outset.' Reports have since claimed Hamilton had picked up floor damage during the race, which may have impacted his Ferrari in the closing stages on Sunday. Hamilton currently trails Ferrari team-mate Leclerc by 23 points in the drivers' championship, with the seven-time world champion is sixth in the overall standings. Hamilton has finished six of his first nine Ferrari races outside of the top five since making the lucrative move.

Dunlop dominates Supertwin TT for 31st victory
Michael Dunlop claimed a record-extending 31st victory at the Isle of Man TT by winning the Supertwins opener on Tuesday. Dunlop, who also won the Supersport opener on Monday, dominated the two-lap race to win by 22.673 seconds ahead of Manx rider Michael Evans and Rob Hodson, who both secured their first TT like the Superstock TT, which was won by Honda's Dean Harrison, the Supertwins opener was cut to two laps and pushed back to the evening after rain throughout the day on Tuesday."The bike worked lovely and on the second lap I seen I was up 10 seconds so I started to calm myself a little bit," Dunlop told TT Plus. "These bikes are a maintenance thing, the engines get so much torture so fair play for the Paton boys, it's good to get another win for them." It was record 48th solo podium for Dunlop, which meant he has been on the rostrum for 52% of all races he has entered at the gruelling road race, which takes place between 37.7 miles of closed public roads."The main thing is to win TTs, and to get into another bracket into the 30s is good," he added."To win two this early on in the week has been great, but we need to keep pushing. Let's see what we're made of." Northern Ireland's Dunlop had won both Supertwin races at the TT in 2024 and picked up where he left off. He led after the first sector at Glen Helen on the opening lap and didn't look back from that point. Manx rider Evans, who was celebrating his birthday, was overtaken by Dunlop over the Mountain but tucked in behind the Paton rider to hold a comfortable second position heading on the second and final lap. Dunlop led by 10.7 seconds from Evans, who in turn held a 9.4 seconds advantage over Davey Todd, who was being held by in traffic behind Adam rider has won more races at the TT than Dunlop, and the 36-year-old cruised to victory with a commanding performance with a winning margin of 22.673 seconds. It was a 32nd birthday to celebrate for Evans, who claimed his first TT podium and was emotional as he entered the winners' enclosure. "I can't believe it," a tearful Evans told TT Plus."I've deamt about this for so much of my life. I don't even know what to say, I've worked so hard to be here. "You believe it and imagine it, but you never know if it's actually going to happen. It's the best birthday I've ever had". Behind the leading pair, Hodson prevailed in a tight battle for third by beating Paul Jordan by 1.757 seconds. Todd, Dominic Herbertson and Stefano Bonetti rounded out the top six."It's pretty special," said Hodson. "It's good to reward the team with a podium, and my first one."It's above and beyond what I ever expected to achieve when I started racing at the Isle of Man TT. I'll never forget this moment."
