Bharat Biotech in-licences GSK's Shigella vaccine

Time of India20 hours ago

Hyderabad: Vaccine maker Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) has in-licensed pharma giant GSK's under development Shigella vaccine candidate, altSonflex1-2-3. The vaccine candidate was being developed by GSK against Shigellosis, a severe form of bacterial diarrhoea that largely affects children aged below five years in low- and middle-income countries.
While GSK has already conducted Phase I and II trials in Europe and Africa, Bharat Biotech will take up further development with Phase III clinical trials, regulatory advancement, and large-scale manufacturing, the Hyderabad-based vaccine maker said on Thursday.
As part of the agreement, GSK will continue to support the programme by assisting with clinical trial design, securing external funding, and contributing to the access and delivery plans and commercialisation strategy.
The vaccine has been developed on the innovative generalised modules for membrane antigens (GMMA) based platform, which uses bacterial outer membranes to deliver the O Antigen to the immune system.
"The in-licensed candidate, altSonflex1-2-3, already showed encouraging results in early-stage clinical trials. A Phase 1 study conducted in Europe demonstrated a favourable safety profile and strong immune response," Bharat Biotech said.

"Subsequent Phase 2 trials in Africa, including vaccination of 9-month-old infants—the primary target population—reported no safety concerns. Interim results from 2024 confirmed that the candidate met its pre-set immunogenicity goals," it added.
Bharat Biotech Executive Chairman Dr Krishna Ella said: "With no approved vaccine currently available for Shigella and antimicrobial resistance on the rise, there is an urgent need for scalable, science-backed solutions focused on low and middle-income countries.
This collaboration combines our strengths in innovation, manufacturing, and global health commitment."
He pointed out that Bharat Biotech already has a significant presence in vaccines for diarrhoeal infections, including rotavirus, typhoid, polio, non-typhoidal salmonella, cholera, and paratyphi.
In 2021, GSK had inked a product transfer agreement for the world's first malaria vaccine, RTS,S, with Bharat Biotech.

Detroit Lions legend Barry Sanders features in The Making of a Heart Attack after suffering from a health scare on Father's Day last year

(Image via Getty: Barry Sanders) Last year on Father's Day, Barry Sanders, a 56-year-old former running back, suffered a health scare related to his heart while attending a recruiting visit for his son. Today, he shared with the whole world that it was a heart attack. Back then, he had only shared about a health scare related to his heart via his official X account. Sanders wrote, 'Over Father's Day weekend, I experienced a health scare related to my heart. It was unexpected and served as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant about our physical well-being, even when we are feeling fine.' Taking this vigilance a step further, the 10-time Pro Bowler will be seen on the silver screen for a documentary series called The Making of a Heart Attack. The series is set to premiere on June 14, 2025(Yet again, on Father's Day!) on A&E. Barry Sanders, who suffered a heart attack, encourages people to go to the doctor and get tested for LDLC levels or bad cholesterol On June 13, the Michigan Sports Hall of Famer, Barry Sanders, shared with Bryan DeArdo, NFL Writer at CBS Sports, 'I couldn't believe it. I thought it was like heartburn, but it just kind of persisted. Of all things, I don't know why that just never entered my mind. I'm learning through this process that there aren't necessarily any warning signs unless you do what we're encouraging people to do, which is to go to the doctor and get tested for LDLC levels or bad cholesterol. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo That's the only way to find out if you have high cholesterol. It's not something you're going to be able to feel. You don't have to fit a certain physical profile.' The Making of a Heart Attack has gripping stories that will get a lot of people's attention Talking about The Making of a Heart Attack documentary series, Sanders said, 'It's really been an education for me, learning about how frequent this happens all over the U.S. Conversing with these individuals who are part of this documentary and who have very insightful, gripping stories about the journey that they've been on - it's really amazing. I think it will get a lot of people's attention.' Barry Sanders adopted a heart-healthy workout with medications, dietary changes, and additional walking Talking about adopting a heart-healthy workout after his health scare, the 8-time All-Pro Barry Sanders said, 'Being the kind of athlete that I was, I would see people walking, and I would wonder, 'What kind of workout is that?' But there's a thing called a heart-healthy workout, where you're just getting your heart rate up a little bit over a certain period of time, and that's just really good for your heart. There was a certain ignorance that I had about things like that. But all of it has been a learning process.' Apart from that, Sanders attributes his recovery to medications, dietary changes, and additional walking, as advised by his doctors. What are the symptoms of a heart attack ? Insurance company directed to reimburse Rs 17 lakh to man

COIMBATORE: The district consumer redressal commission has directed a private insurance company to reimburse Rs 17 lakh in medical expenses to a customer who contracted Covid-19, followed by a heart attack and liver complications. The commission noted that the claim had been rejected without valid grounds, despite the submission of all necessary documents. According to official sources, S Ranganathan of Kalveerampalayam in Coimbatore purchased an international travel insurance policy from the private insurer for the period from Dec 11, 2023, to June 6, 2024. He travelled to Singapore on Dec 12, 2023, and tested positive for Covid-19 on Dec 15. However, the claim was rejected on Jan 24 on the grounds of alleged non-disclosure of a pre-existing heart condition. Ranganathan, however, had no history of heart ailments, and the heart attack occurred only after contracting Covid-19. Supporting medical records and a certificate from the treating doctor were also submitted. A complaint was then lodged with the insurance ombudsman, but the hearing was missed due to a missed email alert. The case was dismissed. A request for a re-hearing was also denied. Subsequently, Ranganathan filed a petition with the Coimbatore district consumer redressal commission. In its order, commission president R Thangavel and members P Marimuthu and G Suguna directed the insurance company to reimburse the medical expenses of Rs 17 lakh. The company was also ordered to pay him Rs 10,000 as compensation for mental agony and Rs 5,000 towards the cost of the proceedings. After losing son, this man fights to save others through blood donation

1 2 Chhapra: When Tarique Anwar lost his eight-year-old son Aayan Fahad to blood cancer in Oct 2024, his world collapsed. But from that unbearable grief emerged a purpose so powerful that it has now become his life's mission – saving lives through blood donation. A resident of Bada Telpa in Chhapra, 37-year-old Tarique has donated blood 16 times and organised 26 blood donation camps in less than a year. He calls it a sacred act, born from a father's heartbreak and turned into a lifelong tribute. "If my blood can save someone's life, then no worship is greater than this," he said. On June 14, World Blood Donor Day, Tarique will once again roll up his sleeve. For him, it is a solemn vow he renews in memory of his son. "Apni us jang ki yaad mein jo unho ne Fahad ki yaad mein ladi, ab har Fahad ke liye lad raha hoon (In the memory of Fahad, for whom I once fought a battle, I now fight for every Fahad)," he said. Born to a family of academics, Tarique is the third of four sons. His father, Mohammad Isha, is a retired govt school headmaster. His mother, the late Ashman Khatun, was the family's guiding light. He has three sisters and his wife, Bilkish Jahan, serves as a govt medical officer in Katihar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pruébalo cuanto antes Nuevo Qashqai Híbrido Obtén ofertas Undo Despite his own pain, Tarique's resolve has inspired over 100 young people to step forward and donate blood. He has worked tirelessly to bust the myths and fears around blood donation, especially the belief that it weakens the donor. His slogan is as direct as his message – "Jhijhak todiye, agar swasth hain to raktdaan kariye" (Break the shyness. If you are healthy, donate blood). "Society may be shrinking, but stories like these can inspire. I can never bring my son back, but through this pious work, I feel a sense of healing," he said.
