Review: Fried chicken is now big business in NI – but this chain is challenging the pecking order
Chain could rule the roost if it cut back on the sauces and ditched pickles on chicken burgers
Chicken is big business in Northern Ireland of late. You only have to trip over yourself and the likelihood of falling down outside a poultry-themed eatery is high.
Rather than falling fowl (yes, this review will have chicken puns) of queuing for Popeyes, myself and Mummy Toner waited until a wet Saturday before shelling out (I'm so sorry) on lunch.

Popeyes to give away 10,000 free food items across the UK - how to get yours
Popeyes will be giving away 10,000 free biscuits on Thursday, May 29 (Image: Popeyes) This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald. Popeyes has announced it will be giving away 10,000 free items of food this week across the UK. The fried chicken restaurant chain opened its first store in the UK back in November 2021 and now has 65, with many to be found in spots like London and Manchester. A staple on its menu since it first opened in the United States back in 1972 is the Popeyes Biscuit. This is a "fluffy, buttery delicacy" that is somewhat similar to a scone, but savoury in nature. The Popeyes Biscuit is effectively a savoury version of a scone (Image: Popeyes) Popeyes adds: "It is served with Cajun Gravy as a traditional Southern side with fried chicken, or can be enjoyed with toppings like hot honey or Nutella for breakfast." The American-style biscuit is not a common food item over in the UK, so on National Biscuit Day (Thursday, May 29), Popeyes will be giving away 10,000 of them. How to get a free biscuit from Popeyes All fans need to do to try the treat out for themselves is download the Popeyes app and register for an account before Thursday, May 29. They will then be entered into a draw for a chance to win a free biscuit, which can be claimed on the day. Dave Hoskins, head of food at Popeyes UK said: 'Unlike the British scone, Popeyes Biscuit is buttery and savoury - not crumbly and sweet - which makes it the perfect partner to dip into Cajun Gravy and enjoy with shatter crunchin' fried chicken. Recommended reading: "At first glance, they do look very similar to the traditional scone, so it's no surprise fans this side of the pond often ask about them. "However, the Biscuit was one of our most requested items when we first announced we were coming to the UK. "So what better time than National Biscuit Day to clear up the confusion and give Brits the chance to taste the difference for themselves, with thousands of Biscuits up for grabs.'
