First millennial saint Carlo Acutis will be canonized Sept. 7, the pope says

Independent18 hours ago

Pope Leo XIV on Friday set Sept. 7 as the rescheduled date to canonize the Catholic Church's first millennial-era saint Carlo Acutis.
Leo made the announcement during a meeting of cardinals, known as a consistory, to set the dates for a handful of new saints.
Acutis' canonization was originally scheduled for April 27, but was postponed following the death of Pope Francis on April 21.
Acutis was 15 when he died in northern Italy in 2006, after a short bout with leukemia. He has become enormously popular especially among young Catholics who have been flocking to his tomb in Assisi.
While he enjoyed regular pastimes for his age — hiking, video games, and joking around with friends – he also taught catechism in a local parish and did outreach to the homeless. He used his computer skills to create an online exhibit about more than 100 eucharistic miracles recognized by the church over many centuries.
His tomb in Assisi has become a pilgrimage site especially during the 2025 Holy Year underway. It features a glass coffin in which Acutis can be seen dressed in sneakers, jeans and a sweatshirt,
In setting the Sept. 7 date, Leo announced that Acutis would be canonized along with another Italian Catholic, Pier Giorgio Frassati, who also died young at age 24 after contracting polio.

Leonardo DiCaprio, 50, reunites with bachelor party pals while girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti, 27, is away

Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted out with his longtime industry friends on Thursday night as they gathered for dinner in Los Angeles. The 50-year-old Oscar-winning actor was joined by old pals Tobey Maguire, Lukas Haas, Ethan Suplee and Vincent Laresca — whose longstanding friendship earned them the notorious collective nickname 'pussy posse' in the late 90s. DiCaprio wore a black baseball cap, black T-shirt, and brown suede jacket. As is typical when he steps out these days, the star wore a gray mask over the lower half of his face. It comes as his 27-year-old girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti enjoys time in Italy. She joined actor Theo James at a Dolce & Gabbana event in Capri on Thursday. The duo posed for photos aboard a boat for the Italian brand's Light Blue perfume launch. In March Vittoria made rare comments about her age-gap romance with Leo in an interview with Vogue France. She revealed for the first time that the couple met 'in Milan. But I prefer not to go into details.' And the beauty added that she's a fan of DiCaprio's iconic 1997 film Titanic, which was released the year before she was born. 'Who hasn't seen it? Or didn't like it? It's an iconic film...' she noted. Ceretti also said the couple's love for another is strong enough to transcend jealousy between them as she explained, 'It's something you learn: if what you're experiencing is real, if you know you love each other, then there's no reason to be alarmed. Because love protects and gives confidence.' She also revealed she has forged a close bond with DiCaprio's family, particularly his mother Irmelin Indenbirken. Last November there was widespread speculation about whether DiCaprio had popped the question to Ceretti, who was previously married to Italian DJ Matteo Milleri. They first sparked dating rumors in summer 2023 when they were spotted on an ice cream date in Los Angeles. They were later spotted out dancing at a club in Ibiza. The couple reportedly met at the Killers of The Flower Moon premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Buzz off, Bezos! Amazon tycoon and bride-to-be Lauren Sanchez get an early wedding message from Venice protesters

When they booked Venice for their wedding later this month, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez will have dreamt of being greeted by the sight of gondolas and bell towers. But as these pictures show, the happy couple must also be prepared for a noisier, less friendly welcome in the 'serene city'. With a fortnight to go, Left-wing protesters and some locals are already making their feelings clear about the glitzy three-day event taking place on their doorstep in La Serenissima. Activists have put up banners around the historic city denouncing the ceremony, which is said to be costing £7million. Some have occupied the bell tower of a landmark church said to be one of the possible wedding venues. A huge banner bearing the name of the Amazon tycoon, struck out with a red cross, was hung from the tower of the Basilica of San Giorgio. The church and its buildings occupy the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, which Mr Bezos and Ms Sanchez are rumoured to be taking over for the big day. A video released by a protest group calling itself 'No Space For Bezos' showed members hanging up the banner. They said on their website: 'Venice is not for sale... it is not for rent, it is not the backdrop for the wedding of one of the richest men in the world.' They called Mr Bezos 'an oligarch whose business is responsible for a disproportionate amount of emissions', adding: 'Those who expect a docile and servile Venice, intent on collecting the crumbs that fall from the king's table, will be disappointed.' Venetians have accused the billionaire, 61, of turning their home into a 'playground' for the ultra-wealthy, with many of the city's luxury hotels and water taxis expected to be booked out by the celebrity guests. Posters put up throughout the city include an image of Bezos's head on top of a rocket with the slogan: 'No space for Bezos, No space for oligarchs!' Another protest group, Laboratorio Occupato Morion, has warned there will be a protest on the day of the wedding – which is reportedly taking place between June 24 and 26. Politicians, business leaders and celebrities including the Kardashians and actress Eva Longoria are expected to attend, which will mean closed pathways, canals and airspace, and a strong police presence.

Moment idiot tourist SHATTERS crystal-studded ‘Van Gogh' chair after sitting on it as pal took a photo

THIS is the embarrassing moment a man sits down on a crystal-studded 'Van Gogh' chair for a picture - only for it to buckle beneath him. The two senseless visitors caused "serious damage" to the valuable artwork, the Italian art gallery revealed. The chair, designed by Italian artist Nicola Bolla, is adorned with hundreds of Swarovski crystals making it "extremely fragile and delicate", according to local media. In the shocking CCTV footage, a man and woman can be seen waiting for security to leave the room at Maffei Palace in Verona, before posing for the snap that ended in disaster. The two senseless visitors caused "serious damage" to the valuable artwork While the woman appears to hover over the chair to avoid placing her weight on it, the man daringly decides to take a seat. The chair instantly breaks apart, with the man left reaching his arms back towards the walls for support. The pair then surreptitiously scurry out of the room, leaving the artwork in a crooked state. Following the incident, the museum released a statement on its social media accounts. "Waiting for the surveillance officers to come out, some visitors took an "in effect" photo. "The result? An irresponsible gesture caused serious damage to Nicola Bolla's "Van Gogh" chair, a very delicate work, covered entirely with hundreds of Swarovski crystals." The museum explained that thanks to "restorers who did a fantastic job", along with Italian law enforcement, "the piece is shining once again". It added: "We are sharing this episode not only for the sake of reporting, but to start a real campaign to raise awareness about the value of art and the respect it deserves. "A heartfelt thank you goes to the police, our security department and the restaurateurs, whose valuable work allowed the recovery of the work. "And a special thank you to all of you who walk through the museum halls every day with care, attention and wonder. "Because art is not just for seeing. It is to be loved. It is to be protected." It comes as a tourist recently smashed two priceless statues after jumping a railing around the Terracotta Army in the Chinese city of Xi'An.
