First millennial saint Carlo Acutis will be canonized Sept. 7, the pope says
Pope Leo XIV on Friday set Sept. 7 as the rescheduled date to canonize the Catholic Church's first millennial-era saint Carlo Acutis.
Leo made the announcement during a meeting of cardinals, known as a consistory, to set the dates for a handful of new saints.
Acutis' canonization was originally scheduled for April 27, but was postponed following the death of Pope Francis on April 21.
Acutis was 15 when he died in northern Italy in 2006, after a short bout with leukemia. He has become enormously popular especially among young Catholics who have been flocking to his tomb in Assisi.
While he enjoyed regular pastimes for his age — hiking, video games, and joking around with friends – he also taught catechism in a local parish and did outreach to the homeless. He used his computer skills to create an online exhibit about more than 100 eucharistic miracles recognized by the church over many centuries.
His tomb in Assisi has become a pilgrimage site especially during the 2025 Holy Year underway. It features a glass coffin in which Acutis can be seen dressed in sneakers, jeans and a sweatshirt,
In setting the Sept. 7 date, Leo announced that Acutis would be canonized along with another Italian Catholic, Pier Giorgio Frassati, who also died young at age 24 after contracting polio.

With a fortnight to go, Left-wing protesters and some locals are already making their feelings clear about the glitzy three-day event taking place on their doorstep in La Serenissima. Activists have put up banners around the historic city denouncing the ceremony, which is said to be costing £7million. Some have occupied the bell tower of a landmark church said to be one of the possible wedding venues. A huge banner bearing the name of the Amazon tycoon, struck out with a red cross, was hung from the tower of the Basilica of San Giorgio. The church and its buildings occupy the island of San Giorgio Maggiore, which Mr Bezos and Ms Sanchez are rumoured to be taking over for the big day. A video released by a protest group calling itself 'No Space For Bezos' showed members hanging up the banner. They called Mr Bezos 'an oligarch whose business is responsible for a disproportionate amount of emissions', adding: 'Those who expect a docile and servile Venice, intent on collecting the crumbs that fall from the king's table, will be disappointed.' The two senseless visitors caused "serious damage" to the valuable artwork, the Italian art gallery revealed. The chair, designed by Italian artist Nicola Bolla, is adorned with hundreds of Swarovski crystals making it "extremely fragile and delicate", according to local media. In the shocking CCTV footage, a man and woman can be seen waiting for security to leave the room at Maffei Palace in Verona, before posing for the snap that ended in disaster. The two senseless visitors caused "serious damage" to the valuable artwork While the woman appears to hover over the chair to avoid placing her weight on it, the man daringly decides to take a seat. The chair instantly breaks apart, with the man left reaching his arms back towards the walls for support. The pair then surreptitiously scurry out of the room, leaving the artwork in a crooked state. Following the incident, the museum released a statement on its social media accounts. "Waiting for the surveillance officers to come out, some visitors took an "in effect" photo. "The result? An irresponsible gesture caused serious damage to Nicola Bolla's "Van Gogh" chair, a very delicate work, covered entirely with hundreds of Swarovski crystals." The museum explained that thanks to "restorers who did a fantastic job", along with Italian law enforcement, "the piece is shining once again".
