Swiss sweep men's team combined at worlds as American duo just misses medal

New York Times12-02-2025

Switzerland swept the podium Wednesday in the debut of the men's team combined event at the Alpine skiing world championships, knocking the American duo of Ryan Cochran-Siegle and Ben Ritchie out of medal position in a dramatic finish.
Franjo Von Allmen and Loic Meillard won the event, which combines a downhill leg and a slalom leg, with a total time of 2:42.38, beating out Alexis Monney and Tanguy Nef by 0.27 seconds for gold. Stefan Rogentin and Marc Rochat took bronze, 0.43 off the pace.

Monney, the bronze medalist in the individual downhill earlier this week, and Von Allmen, the gold medalist in that race, finished 1-2 in the downhill run, with Von Allmen just 0.02 back, while Rogentin was 1.08 back in eighth place. Cochran-Siegle finished 12th in the downhill, 1.26 back.
In the afternoon slalom, Ritchie posted the fifth-best run to move them into the top position with the 11 teams with better downhill times still to go. But of the next nine slalom skiers, three skied out — including French star Clement Noel, the 2022 Olympic slalom champion with 14 career World Cup wins — and five others struggled on a difficult, rainy day on the course. Only Rochat bested Ritchie's time in that group, moving him and Rogentin into first place with the top two Swiss teams left.
It came down to Meillard and Nef. Meillard gave back more than six-tenths of a second but did enough with his slalom run to put him and Von Allmen into first and bump the Americans to third.
Then came Nef, who was 0.29 slower than Meillard, moving him and Monney into silver and ousting the Americans from the stand.
It was a strong result for Cochran-Siegle and Ritchie, who finished 0.69 off the lead and 0.26 away from a bronze. Cochran-Siegle is currently ninth in the World Cup downhill standings; Ritchie is 19th in the slalom ranks.
The 32-year-old Cochran-Siegle was competing in his fifth world championships. He took silver in the super-G at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing but had never finished higher than 10th in any event at worlds before taking seventh in the super-G earlier this week.
Ritchie, 24, is in his first world championships. His previous best showing was eighth in a World Cup slalom in January.
Meillard, 28, eyeing his third Olympic trip, won his fourth world championship medal and first gold. The 23-year-old Von Allmen made it two golds at his debut world championships. He also won a World Cup super-G last month. The 25-year-old Monney, also in his first world championships, notched his first World Cup downhill win in December in Bormio, Italy — the 2026 Olympic venue for men's Alpine.

Americans Mikaela Shiffrin and Breezy Johnson won the women's team combined on Tuesday. The event will make its Olympic debut for both men and women at the 2026 Games.

Paris Saint-Germain thumps Atlético Madrid 4-0 in an impressive Club World Cup opener

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Fabián Ruiz and Vitinha scored in the first half, and Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain opened Club World Cup play with a 4-0 victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday. PSG largely dominated Atlético at the Rose Bowl in its first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win its first Champions League title on May 31. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in scored against 10-man Atlético in the second half of the European powers' meeting in front of 80,619 fans at the site of the 1994 World Cup final for one of the highest-profile matches in the group stage of the first 32-team edition of the Club World Cup. Atlético's Clément Lenglet was sent off in the 78th minute with his second yellow card on a frustrating day that left Diego Simeone visibly furious at both the referees and his players' mistakes. Ousmane Dembélé wasn't in uniform for PSG after reportedly injuring a quadriceps while playing for France on June 6. Gonçalo Ramos replaced Dembélé in Luis Enrique's only change to the starting lineup from the Champions League final. Enrique wore shorts and a training shirt on the sideline while coaching PSG in 88-degree midday California heat ((31 Celsius). PSG controlled possession early, and Ruiz capitalized atop the penalty area in the 19th minute. The Spanish midfielder long coveted by Atlético beat Jan Oblak with a clever strike into the far corner. Vitinha followed with a goal in injury time off Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's second assist of the first half. Julián Alvarez appeared to answer for Atlético in the second half, but the goal was waved off after VAR determined Koke had fouled Désiré Doué in the buildup. Alexander Sørloth horrifically missed an open net in the 82nd minute for Atlético. Mayulu iced PSG's victory five minutes later, and Lee converted a penalty on the final kick of the match. Key moment Atlético got a golden chance to tie it in first-half injury time, but Gianluigi Donnarumma swallowed up Thomas Griezmann's hard shot in the box. Moments later, Vitinha slipped through the Atlético defense and scored on the break. Takeaways PSG looked remarkably sharp late in its taxing season, showing no sign of treating this tournament as an anticlimax. The champs are in good shape to advance from group play after winning their toughest group match on paper. ___

Why Christian Pulisic and other USMNT stars aren't playing in Gold Cup

Why Christian Pulisic and other USMNT stars aren't playing in Gold Cup The U.S. men's national team enters the CONCACAF Gold Cup coming off a four-game losing streak under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. And if the USMNT is going to right the ship this tournament, it's going to do so without its best players. In recent years, the Gold Cup has been relegated to a developmental tournament with U.S. Soccer opting to instead send its best team to the CONCACAF Nations League or last year's Copa America. But this summer's Gold Cup could have been different with it being the final competitive tournament for the USMNT before next year's World Cup. Yet, when the rosters were announced, star players like Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Yunus Musah and Weston McKennie were not included ... for different reasons. Pulisic's absence was especially controversial among the USMNT fan base as the 26-year-old was coming off his best season at AC Milan. Pulisic, though, asked to not be a part of the Gold Cup roster in order to give himself an offseason to recover. Pulisic told CBS Sports that he was willing to play in the pre-Gold Cup friendlies, but Pochettino declined that request. The USMNT coach wanted to use the same roster for both the friendlies and Gold Cup, so Pulisic opted to stay home. Musah and Robinson had similar reasons to Pulisic. They wanted to use the summer as an opportunity to recover ahead of the club season and World Cup. When it comes to McKennie, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah, they were not available as their club teams are competing in the FIFA Club World Cup. USMNT starters Folarin Balogun and Sergiño Dest were included on the initial camp roster but withdrew ahead of the friendlies. Both players were coming off lengthy injuries and were still working back to full strength.

The U.S. enters this match on a four-game losing streak, including a lopsided 4-0 defeat to Switzerland that offered little to build on. While injuries have certainly taken a toll, the team will need to turn things around quickly if it hopes to make a serious run at the 2025 Gold Cup. Of course, in fairness to the Americans, the team is currently riddled with injuries. It heads into the 2025 Gold Cup without some of its biggest names, namely: Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna, and Folarin Balogun. Regardless, results like its recent ones are unacceptable for a team like the USMNT, so the pressure will be on Team USA to raise its level, starting on Sunday against Trinidad & Tobago. Will the USMNT regain its footing and break its losing streak against Trinidad & Tobago? Or will Trinidad & Tobago add another notch to its belt with another win over Team USA? You can find out on Sunday night. Tune in to FOX at 6:00 p.m. ET on Sunday night to catch the USMNT back in action as it takes on Trinidad & Tobago in an exciting matchup between two CONCACAF rivals.
