‘CM Chandrababu Naidu determined to complete HNSS at earliest to supply water to Rayalaseema'
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is determined to expedite the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS), a vital irrigation project for Rayalaseema, said Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu.
During a visit to Dharmavaram constituency on Friday, he inspected the construction works of the Handri-Neeva main canal at Malaka Vemala. Irrigation Advisor Venkateswara Rao and Joint Collector Abhishek Kumar accompanied him.
During a review meeting, Ramanaidu highlighted the project's progress, and its significance. The State government is investing Rs 3,873 crore on widening and lining of the 554 km canal under Phase 1 and 2 of the project. Phase 1, with Rs 696 crore, and Phase 2, with Rs 256 crore, cover the main canal (216 –400 km) and Punganur branch canal (0–75 km). Works of the Punganur branch canal (75–207 km) were taken up in January 2025 with Rs 480 crore, he explained.
Upon completion, the project will transform agriculture in the drought-prone region. Phase 1 will irrigate 1,98,000 acres, including 77,094 acres in Kurnool, 2,906 acres in Nandyal, and 1,18,000 acres in Anantapur. Phase 2 will provide water to 4,04,500 acres, covering 33,617 acres in Anantapur, 1,93,383 acres in Sri Sathya Sai, 37,500 acres in Kadapa, and 1,40,000 acres in Chittoor, he highlighted. In total, 6,02,500 acres across Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa and Chittoor districts will get irrigation water from the project. It will also supply drinking water to 33 lakh people across 81 mandals, he said.

2 Militants Killed In Gunfight With Security Forces In Arunachal Pradesh
ITANAGAR: Security forces neutralised two militants during a fierce gun battle in Arunachal Pradesh's Longding district, bordering Myanmar, officials said on Friday. A Defence spokesperson said that the slain militants were suspected to be from the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-K-YA) faction. The gunfight occurred on Thursday when during the patrolling party of the security forces came under attack from militants believed to be operating across the porous India-Myanmar border in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh. 'In response, the security forces effectively retaliated against the attack,' the spokesman said, adding that during the intense firefight, the armed cadres withdrew across the International Border towards Myanmar. The NSCN (K-YA) faction has been active in cross-border operations despite ongoing peace negotiations with various other Naga outfits including dominant faction NSCN (IM). Meanwhile, on May 14, ten militants were killed during an encounter with the Assam Rifles in southern Manipur's Chandel district, which shares the unfenced border with Myanmar and a large cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from the spot. The cache comprised seven AK-47 rifles, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, a M4 rifle, and four single-barrel breech-loading rifles, ammunition and other war-like stores. On April 27, three militants of the NSCN-K-YA faction were killed during a fierce gun battle between the security forces and the extremists in Arunachal Pradesh's same Longding district. Meanwhile, the Army and Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Assam Police, earlier apprehended a wanted top cadre of the NSCN-KYA from Assam's Charaideo district. The NSCN-K-YA has earlier served an extortion notice of Rs 20 lakh to the public sector oil major Oil India Limited (OIL). The notice was signed by the outfit's self-styled Major, Tha Aung and sent to OIL's office in Manabhum, located in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The OIL has its operational site at the Manabhum reserve forest in eastern Arunachal, and the thickly forested reserve forest areas fall under both Changlang and Namsai districts. On April 29, three militants of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) were killed during an encounter with the security forces in Assam's mountainous Dima Hasao district. However, the faction of the NSCN they belonged to is yet to be known. Two AK series rifles and a pistol were recovered from the forested areas. The NSCN-K-YA has not signed a ceasefire agreement with the Centre. Four northeastern states – Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km) and Mizoram (510 km) -- share 1,643-km unfenced border with Myanmar.

This payment was to be made in 10 equal annual instalments and was non-refundable despite any provocation or hostility. India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty in April, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 innocent civilians were gunned down by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked Pakistan over its support to cross-border terrorism and said terror and talks cannot go together and water and blood cannot flow together. In retaliation for the dastardly terror attack Indian government took a slew of action, including the launch of Operation Sindoor in the early hours of May 7, hitting nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoK), in which more than 100 dreaded terrorists were killed.
