South Shore nonprofit helps people struggling with vision loss stay connected to their communities
Boston 25 News is proud to support the Talking Information Center, a Marshfield based nonprofit organization ensuring people with vision loss stay connected to the communities that they live and work in.
On Tuesday, anchor and investigative reporter Kerry Kavanaugh spoke at the Collective Impact Luncheon for advocates, donors, and state lawmakers.
Every week, 200 volunteers read newspapers, magazines, announcements, and other printed materials to listeners. Those readings are recorded and shared through radio, online, and a variety of other avenues.
The Talking Information Center has a big reach with more than 25,000 listeners yearly.

Firefighters battle commercial building fire in Cambridge
Firefighters worked late Saturday night to battle a commercial building fire. Firefighters were first called to a fire at 127 Smith Place and 30 Mooney Street around 11:25 p.m. Upon arrival firefighters found fire showing form the commercial building. Crews launched an aggressive fast attack, immediately operating the deck gun to knock down intense, visible flames. 75 firefighters responded to the scene and there are no injures to report. Mass Cash drawing undergoes error, not able to be completed per lottery rules
During tonight's Mass Cash drawing, an error occurred, preventing the drawing to not be completed. As a result of the error, the drawing could not resume per the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission's rules. The official Mass Cash drawing will be redone later tonight. The Numbers game drawing, however, was completed successfully, and all numbers drawn are the official numbers. This is a developing story. ‘This kind of behavior will not be tolerated': Hampton police investigating shots fired reports
The Hampton Police Department has launched an investigation following reports of shots fired in town. Police say that on Thursday night, around 7:35 PM, officers were dispatched to the area of Ocean Boulevard and G Street to the sounds of shots fired. Numerous officers quickly responded and set up a perimeter and closed down the area. Police were able to locate a firearm and take a person matching the description of a suspect into custody. 'Tonight, several officers ran toward the sound of gunfire and quickly rendered the area safe.' Said Hampton Chief Alex Reno. 'I'm thankful that there were no injuries and thankful for the officers who did not hesitate to immediately respond to the threat. While these situations are extremely rare, this kind of behavior will not be tolerated, and those involved will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.' At this time, police say there is no threat to the public and that some parts of Ocean Boulevard have been reopened.
