Man identified in attempted abduction cold case with black-and-white photo 43 years later

The New South Wales District Court has heard Warren John McCorriston is wanted on charges in Queensland, after admitting to the attempted abduction of a teenager near Newcastle more than four decades ago.
In April the 64-year-old pleaded guilty to attempting to abduct the woman with the intention of having sexual contact with her.
In agreed facts tendered to the District Court in Newcastle, he admitted to detaining the 17-year-old girl for advantage at Gateshead, south of Newcastle, on a night in 1980, when he was 19.
On the night of the crime, the woman got off a bus near her house after going to the movies in Newcastle to see the film 10.
Minutes later the man approached in a red car.
McCorriston got out, chased the woman, said he had a knife and dragged her towards his car.
She broke free, hid in bushes near neighbouring houses, before he left in his car.
"The Crown contends, and the offender accepts, that his intention was to force her into his car so that he could seek to have sexual contact with her," the police facts stated.
In the District Court on Thursday, McCorriston was identified as the man responsible for the abduction attempt for the first time, after the court lifted a non-publication order.
Crown Prosecutor Paul Marr told his sentencing hearing about the day the woman identified her attacker.
"One can only wonder the impact on her, 43 years later she chooses one of 20 people in a black-and-white photo array and she chooses him.
"He is prosecuted and he admits he is the person who accosted her on that evening.
Agreed facts tendered in court said the girl told close friends at the time, but did not report McCorriston to police until 2023.
"This occurred when the victim was watching a television show about Gordana Kotevski, a 16-year-old girl who went missing from Charlestown in the mid 1990s," the police facts said.
"She rang Crime Stoppers after watching the television program."
McCorriston is due to be sentenced on Thursday, June 26.
Defence barrister Ben Bickford told the court McCorriston was only a teenager himself at the time of the offending.
"None of [the] submissions I've made are intended to downplay this or how frightening it was for the victim," Mr Bickford said.
Mr Bickford said his client was remorseful and on a path to rehabilitation.
Mr Marr said McCorriston could not blame youth, saying he is wanted for alleged offending in his 50s in Queensland.
"There are a number of outstanding allegations that the offender is yet to face in Queensland," Mr Marr said.
"The date of the allegations has [the] offender at about 58 years of age at the time of the allegations being made."

‘Well organised': Shocking details emerge of alleged murder of Zivan Radmanovic in Bali

Chilling new details of the alleged murder of a Melbourne man in Bali earlier this month have emerged, including the weapon used in the alleged attack. Australians Zivan Radmanovic and Sanar Ghanim were shot shortly after midnight on June 13 at a villa in Bali's south, in what is suspected to be linked to the Melbourne underworld crime syndicate. Mr Radmanovic died at the scene and Mr Ghanim suffered injuries to his leg. After a five-day manhunt for the alleged 'executers', three men, Midolmore Pasa Tupou, 27, Darcy Francesco Jenson, 27, and Mevlut Coskun, 22, were arrested in connection to the shooting. Bali Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya told reporters on Thursday the alleged crime was 'well organised'. Inspector General Adityajaya alleged the trio, known as the Bali 3, had 'planned the act (for) quite long', accusing them of playing key roles in the alleged murder. He alleged 27-year-old Jenson was the mastermind of the attack, booking the villa where the shooting occurred, and supplying the tools, including a hammer to break into the villa. He is also accused of providing transportation for the other alleged offenders, renting a white Toyota Fortuner and a Suzuki XL7, as well as purchasing ferry tickets from Java to Bali. Police allege 22-year-old Coskun and 26-year-old Tupou were the shooters in the attack, with Tupou reportedly purchasing the firearm and disposing of a motorbike used as a getaway vehicle. Coskun is alleged to have helped dispose of the vehicle and purchased clothing for the attack. During the investigation into the alleged murder, police recovered several pieces of evidence in the villa, including two bullet fragments, six bullet casings and 38 bullet shards. Police also claimed to have found the gun used in the alleged attack, which was dumped alongside two magazines with bullets and an empty magazine in a river in Tabanan about 700m from the villa. In a press conference on Thursday, police showed off the weapon in an evidence bag, as well as the sledgehammer allegedly used to break and enter the villa. Police were able to identify the trio by tracking the purchase of the sledgehammer to a store, later linking them to their hired getaway vehicles. Police are yet to establish a motive behind the alleged attack, however believe the men have links to the Melbourne underworld. 'We are still investigating their motive and continue cross-checking the facts,' Inspector General Adityajaya said. If the trio are charged and convicted under Article 340, they could face the death penalty.

Man allegedly steals cow semen, embryos and Wagyu cattle from his former employer

Police have charged a man over his alleged theft of cow semen, embryos and dozens of Wagyu cattle from his former employer. A strike force was formed by NSW Police last year to investigate allegations of 'fraud and stolen genetics' from a cattle farm on the state's north coast. An extensive search led police to a 34-year-old man who had been requested to sell 200 recipient and empty cattle on behalf of his employer. Instead, police allege, the man also sold 45 full-blood Wagyu cows and heifers against his employer's wishes. Further, it is alleged that he used a third-party buyer to purchase the 45 full-blood cattle alongside dozens of other cows for himself. In his dealings, police allege the man gained almost $100,000 of a financial advantage from the greatly reduced price of the 45 cows. But it was during a search warrant executed by police that a 'genetic liquid nitrogen storage tank which contained stolen cattle semen' was seized, police said. The semen was worth $100,000. Further, the man allegedly engaged a 48-year-old Grafton veterinarian after he was asked to get medical help for six sick Wagyu bulls. The vet allegedly produced false documentation of providing care without treating the cattle, with at least two later dying from their illness. The 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday and charged with commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal, being in charge of an animal fail to provide vet treatment, and do act intending to pervert the course of justice. The 34-year-old alleged semen thief was arrested on Tuesday and charged with 20 offences. His charges include two counts of steal cattle, three counts of take and use others cattle, and a charge of commit an act of aggravated cruelty upon an animal. He was bailed to appear in Grafton Local Court on Monday, August 4, 2025, while the 48-year-old was bailed to appear on Monday, August 11, 2025.

Parents launch legal action against Victorian school

The ABC has found 10 families have engaged in separate legal action against a prestigious regional Victorian school, over alleged abuse dating back to the 1970s. Families say peer on peer abuse includes whippings, being forced to fight, and a 'culture of cruelty' that has led to decades of hazing. This week, Ballarat Grammar launched its third investigation in five months into allegations of "serious misconduct" in its boys' boarding houses and says the school is taking action.
