Fadhlina: More teaching time for sex education from 2027 to combat harassment

KUALA LUMPUR (June 13): The teaching time for the Reproductive and Social Health Education Guidelines (PEERS) module will be increased in the implementation of the 2027 School Curriculum.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the module, which was launched in November last year, among other things, aims to increase reproductive health awareness among the community, especially students, teachers, and parents.
'All MoE (Ministry of Education) educational institutions are requested to comply with the guidelines to address the issue of sexual harassment. Psychosocial support services also need to be further strengthened to provide support to students,' she said in a statement today.
Fadhlina said MoE takes seriously media reports on the existence of paedophile pages on social media featuring school students and urged that such pages be reported immediately.
'The existence of social media pages that display pornographic and immoral content needs to be curbed,' she said.
At the same time, she also urged parents to play a proactive role at home by educating and protecting children from the threat of sexual harassment.
'They are also responsible in ensuring that the dignity of children is preserved,' she said. — Bernama

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang state health department shut down seven premises, including a kindergarten, and issued 167 notices for various offences along with compounds worth RM43,600 in a public health operation on Thursday (June 12). The operation was conducted to ensure compliance of the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), the Food Act 1983 (Act 281), the Destruction of Disease-Bearing Insects Act 1975 (Act 154 and the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Amendment) 2025 (Act 342). "A total of 84 notices were issued with compounds worth RM20,600 for various offences under Act 852, and notices to appear in court for prosecution were issued for two offences for selling cigarettes in open packs and one offence for selling cigarettes under the sale price. "50 tobacco products worth RM179 were also seized," the department said in a statement on Friday (June 13) night. Also, 45 eateries were inspected with 68 notices issued with compounds worth RM14,500 issued under Act 281, with six premises ordered shut immediately and one grocery store issued a compound of RM2,500 for selling products that did not have manufacturer's information. In addition, 111 food products worth an estimated RM766.70 were seized. Finally, a total of 929 premises were inspected under Act 154 and 12 notices with compounds worth RM6,000 were issued, along with a clean up work order notice issued. A kindergarten was also ordered shut under Act 342 after being found to be at risk of spreading hand, foot, and mouth disease. - Bernama

Fahmi reminds media practitioners to value health amid work commitments
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has advised media practitioners to undergo health screenings to ensure they remain in good shape, especially when carrying out assignments in the field. He acknowledged the dedication of journalists who worked tirelessly to deliver accurate and verified information to the public, often overlooking their own wellbeing in the process. 'I've seen many (journalists) who need a gentle reminder to take care of their health, particularly in terms of heart screenings and other health matters. 'Sometimes we forget to look after ourselves. So this is just a little reminder I wish to convey to my fellow journalists,' he said when speaking at the Gabungan Kelab Media Malaysia (GKMM) Dinner, held in conjunction with the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 here tonight. Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the HAWANA 2025 Project Director, and Bernama's senior management. In conjunction with HAWANA 2025, Fahmi called on all parties to appreciate the role of the media, which remained committed to providing accurate and timely reports to the public.
