Sick funeral scammers target heartbroken Scots family after teen's sudden death

The grieving family of a schoolgirl who died suddenly from a fatal seizure have been targeted by sick funeral scammers.
Lucy Grant, 17, died at her home in Johnstone on April 15. The teenager had been diagnosed with epilepsy just over a year ago and suffered debilitating fits that left her unable to attend school.
Mum Lynette and step-dad Stuart first noticed the teen wasn't responding on the morning of her death. They desperately tried to perform CPR on their daughter before emergency services arrived but she could not be saved.
Lynette, 44, announced her daughter's funeral would take place on May 1 and asked mourners to wear pink.
Within hours loved ones were targeted by cruel thieves who set up a fake Facebook page advertising a live stream of Lucy's funeral service in exchange for cash.
The scammers also targeted mourners by adding them as friends on social media.
Sharing a warning about the scam, Lynette wrote: Lucy's funeral wasn't streamed and anyone who knows us knows that there's not a chance she would have been having any mass.
"Can my friends who have added this page please report it and I hope no one has given them money."

Lucy's tragic death prompted anger across Scotland after we reported how the schoolgirl lay dead on her bedroom floor for nine and a half hours as cops and ambulance staff "argued" over who should take her body to hospital.
Her family said her sudden death was shocking, but that they were left "traumatised" after the police and ambulance staff warred over whose responsibility it was to remove Lucy from the property.
The agencies profusely apologised to the family after the shocking scene and said an internal investigation over the handling of the case was being undertaken.
A growing number of grieving families are being targeted by fraudsters using social media.
Nick Britten from the National Association of Funeral Directors previously told the Record they began seeing this type of fraud increasing last year and that many Scots families had been targeted after featuring in the news.
'Friends and family of the deceased person are not only asked to provide their credit card details to supposedly have access to view the funeral, they are sometimes asked to accept a friend request from the scammers – thereby giving them access to their Facebook information and photographs. These links are fake and anyone who engages and hands over their credit or debit card details will be doing so to scammers.
'This is a despicable practice preying on bereaved people. Our advice to members of the public is to be extremely wary of any external links supposedly promoting a live-stream, fundraising or asking for donations, and instead always check with the family or the funeral director to see whether it is legitimate. If a funeral is being live streamed, a funeral director will always be able to provide the correct link. Funeral Directors do not generally charge for live streaming.'

A young teaching assistant who was stabbed to death by a teenage pupil in a horror knife attack at a school in France has been pictured for the first time. Known only as Melanie G, the single mum and former hairdresser, was looking for concealed weapons alongside a police officer - in line with national education policy - at the gates of Françoise Dolto secondary school in Nogent-sur-Marne, near Paris when the horror unfolded around 8.30am on Tuesday, reports the Mirror. She had only started the job last year, giving up her career in hairdressing to spend more time with her little boy. French police say the 14-year-old schoolboy was tonight facing 20 years in prison after allegedly stabbing the 31-year-old teaching assistant to death after she asked to search his bag for knives. The incident followed a spate of school knife attacks in France, including one in April, when a teenage girl was stabbed to death and three others were wounded at a school in Nantes, in the west of the country. A source investigating the Nogent attack said: "The boy responsible was uninjured, after stabbing his victim multiple times. He was soon restrained by staff, and then arrested by the police officer present at the bag check." The source added: "One of the arresting officers suffered a slight cut to the hand." Referring to the alleged killer, the source said: "He is now in custody, and facing up to 20 years in prison if found guilty in a youth court of a deliberate killing." Local prosecutor Denis Devallois confirmed that a criminal enquiry had been launched into the killing, and that the perpetrator faced prison. The boy who cannot be named for legal reasons had been arrested twive from the school for disruptive behaviour, and was a student representative in the school's anti-bullying programme, claimed the source. Following today's killing, French President Emmanuel Macron described a "senseless wave of violence" in France. He added: "We all stand with [Melanie G.'s] family, her loved ones, her colleagues and the entire educational community. The nation is in mourning and the government is mobilised to reduce crime." Mélanie G. lived in Sarcey, around seven miles from Nogent, where she also worked as a municipal councillor. Paying tribute, her sister-in-law said: "She was funny, gentle, and very kind, and had one goal – to look after her child. She gave up hairdressing because she wanted more days off to be with him." Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann may have uncovered a major breakthrough after 'new evidence' reportedly linked the missing toddler to prime suspect Christian Brueckner. Authorities in Germany and Portugal spent three days last week scouring a 120-acre patch of land in Lagos, just 30 miles from Praia da Luz where three-year-old Madeleine vanished in May 2007. According to local reports, 'several objects' — including clothing, debris and bones — were recovered during the intense search of scrubland, derelict buildings and a crumbling farmhouse. Professor Robert Green, Forensic Science expert at the University of Kent, told The Mirror: 'The authorities' decision to carry out a new search, it is likely influenced by the accumulation of new evidence and information that may have come to light, particularly from recent documentaries and interviews. 'As for the hard drive, if it contains incriminating evidence, it may indeed serve as a 'smoking gun' for investigators. Digital evidence often provides invaluable insights into a suspect's activities, intentions, and potential connections to criminal cases. Should the contents be substantial, they could significantly strengthen the case against Brueckner. 'The rationale behind the renewed search could stem from the ongoing pursuit of justice in the Madeleine McCann case and the hope that any additional evidence could lead to a breakthrough.' Deadly African scorpion is found by horrified Brit woman after it ‘crawled past her feet' while she watched TV
A WOMAN has been left terrified after returning home from holiday and discovering a "deadly" scorpion in her home. It is believed the scorpion hitched a ride back in her luggage when she returned from a holiday in Africa. It was reportedly spotted by the homeowner as she sat watching TV with the scorpion crawling across her carpet right under her nose. The terrified homeowner bravely trapped it under a wine glass before transferring it into a jar where it was safely kept until help arrived. The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was called and recommended the woman speak to a specialist. Advertisement Jonathan Cleverly who provides educational workshops for schools featuring insects, reptiles and invertebrates was eventually scrambled to deal with the African scorpion. Jonathan took the creature away after identifying it as a member of the Buthidae family which several of the most deadly scorpion species in the world are also a part of. After getting the deadly creature home Jonathan made sure to keep it locked up safely before finding it a new home. Jonathan owns several scorpions himself and was well prepared with the proper equipment to transport the deadly animal. Advertisement He dismissed the idea that the animal was an escaped pet, believing it snuck into the UK in the woman's luggage. The dangerous creatures are commonly found in Africa from where the homeowner had recently returned. The scorpion has since been taken to live with an expert who has a DWA (Dangerous Wild Animals) licence. "She put in some lettuce for a bit of moisture. She looked after it brilliantly well. Coming in at just 4cm the scorpion is small but deadly with the species occasionally causing human fatalities.
