As ceasefire holds, an uptick in pilgrim numbers to Vaishno Devi

Indian Express14-05-2025

With the ceasefire between India and Pakistan holding along the international border and the Line of Control, the number of pilgrims reaching Katra town for their onward journey toward the Vaishno Devi shrine has begun picking up.
Official sources said that nearly 4,000 people had reported for registration at the shrine board counter in the town in 24 hours ending 10 pm Tuesday. By 4 pm Wednesday, the number of pilgrims turning up for registration had gone up to 4,000 pilgrims and the figure was going to touch 8,000 by 10 pm, they added.
A shrine board official said that until April 22, when terrorists killed 26 people – mostly tourists but also a local pony operator — in Pahalgam, between 30,000 and 35,000 pilgrims had been visiting the shrine in Trikuta Hills. But numbers began dipping after the attack, standing as low as 2,000-odd pilgrims a day amid border tensions in the aftermath of India's strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan on May 7, the official said.
'With peace now holding between the two countries and the results of the (Central Board of Secondary Education) Classes 10 and 12 announced, the number of pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi shrine is expected to further go up by the end of the week,' he said.
On Wednesday, a day after flights resumed at 32 airports, including Jammu and Srinagar, the helicopter service to the Sanji Chat near the holy shrine from Katra town too was restored.
On Tuesday, there was only one Delhi-Jammu-Srinagar flight, with a senior official at the Jammu airport saying that the number of flights will increase with more passenger bookings. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reopened educational institutions not located along the international border or the Line of Control.

"Response from all countries was good...": BJP MP Brij Lal after concluding 5-nation visit as part of JD(U) MP-led delegation

New Delhi [India], June 4 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Lal on Wednesday said India sent a strong message of peace and development during a five-nation visit led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha. Brij Lal was a part of delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha which visited Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia, where they received a warm response from leaders and citizens alike. Speaking to ANI about the delegation's visit to five nations, Brij Lal said, 'We wanted to show that we are a peaceful country and we don't want war. We want only development. Our delegation went to five countries, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. The response from all the countries was good.' The Indian delegation, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha, included BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, among others. The delegation's tour included stops in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore, underscoring India's commitment to regional peace, security, and development. In the context of Operation Sindoor and India's continued fight against cross-border terrorism, seven All-Party Delegations were constituted to visit key partner countries, including members of the UN Security Council. Union government said that the goal of All-Party Delegations was to project India's national consensus and resolute approach to combating terrorism in all forms and manifestations. 'They would carry forth to the world the country's strong message of zero-tolerance against terrorism,' Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs said earlier on May 17. India had launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The Indian armed forces responded effectively to subsequent Pakistani aggression and pounded its airbases. The two countries then reached an understanding to stop military action following a call made by Pakistan's DGMO to his Indian counterpart. (ANI)

"Reflects communal harmony among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians": J-K Congress chief on Kheer Bhawani Mela

Ganderbal (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 3 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra on Tuesday welcomed the celebration of the Kheer Bhawani Mela, saying that it reflects the deep-rooted tradition of communal harmony among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians. Speaking to ANI, Karra said, 'Like every year, today's fair at the Mata Kheer Bhawani Temple reflects our deep-rooted tradition of communal harmony among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians. Another testament to this unity was seen during the Pahalgam incident, where a Muslim child and 26 others were killed. Despite attempts by certain forces to disrupt this religious harmony, today's gathering is a clear reminder that Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians continue to stand together.' The Kheer Bhawani Mela is an important annual religious festival for the Kashmiri Pandit community. It is held at the Kheer Bhawani Temple in Tulla Mulla village of Ganderbal district. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, a form of Goddess Durga, and is considered one of the holiest sites for Kashmiri Hindus. Earlier today, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah welcomed the celebration of both the Kheer Bhawani Mela and the Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani, calling it a symbol of communal harmony in Kashmir. He stressed the importance of unity for national progress. While speaking to ANI, Farooq Abdullah said, 'It is a matter of joy that the mela of Kheer Bhawani and Urs of Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani are being celebrated today. There has always been brotherhood in the valley. We want to see this brotherhood across the country. If we stay united, we will progress...' Abdullah also appealed to devotees to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, expressing concern over the drop in pilgrim numbers following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. 'We should go to Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra and appeal to the people to visit there. There has been a decrease in the number of devotees to Mata Vaishno Devi. People are scared after the tragedy of war that took place recently. The impact of the Pahalgam incident was seen throughout the country...' Abdullah told ANI. Earlier, Abdullah had urged tourists to return to Jammu and Kashmir, stressing that the region seeks peace, not violence. He expressed concern over the negative impact of terror attacks on tourism and the livelihoods of people in places like Pahalgam, especially ahead of the annual Amarnath Yatra. Speaking to ANI in Pahalgam, Abdullah said, 'The Prime Minister has sent delegations (to various countries). May they send the message that we want peace and we are not in favour of war... Killing innocent people should be stopped.' He added that the local economy, especially in Pahalgam, has suffered due to the 'barbaric' April 22 attack.' 'This year, we expected crores of people to come, and we have no place to accommodate them. But unfortunately, those who killed innocent people did not see what would happen (to taxi drivers, hotel owners, pony owners)... We sell the beauty given by God and earn a living... We are very sad about what happened... Please come back, we are waiting for you (tourists)... 'Bholanath' is also waiting for you as Amarnath Yatra is about to start...', he said. (ANI)
