British woman vanishes on popular holiday island as desperate search launched
Mekealah Freemantle, 39, who is believed to come from the London area, disappeared after leaving a hotel in Jamaica - police have said they are 'worried about her safety'
A British woman has gone missing after leaving her hotel on a Caribbean island with an urgent search underway and police "worried about her safety". Mekealah Freemantle, 39, disappeared while on a short holiday to Jamaica, with local police now appealing to the public for information.
Reports from the Ocho Rios Police suggest Freemantle was last seen leaving a hotel in Ocho Rios, St Ann. Ms Freemantle is described as having a dark complexion, a slim build, and standing approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall. The last confirmed sighting of her was on Saturday, May 24, when she left her hotel.
A local source said it is not known whether she went out to visit friends and family when she was last seen.
A police source said: "All we know is that she was visiting the island and was staying in a hotel. We are trying to ascertain whether she has family on island or a boyfriend who she may have gone to visit. We are appealing to the public for help in locating her.
"Most people who go missing are found after a short while. We are worried about her safety and are calling on anyone who know of her whereabouts to contact us. We are hoping that she will be found soon and safe."
Freemantle is believed to come from the London area and has been described as bubbly, gregarious and affable, according to the local source. "We are hoping and praying that she is found safe, safe and in a fit condition. We are praying for that," they added.
Jamaica Constabulary Force also appealed on social media with a message on Facebook stating: "Help us to locate Mekealah Freemantle. If you know her whereabouts, please call the St. Ann's Bay Police or the 119 Police Emergency number."
It also shared a photo of Ms Freemantle and details about her disappearance stating: "Last seen leaving her hotel wearing a large black hat, green and yellow floral blouse, red dotted shorts and a pair of black shoes. She was also seen with a brown shopping bag. All efforts to contact her have proven futile. She is of dark complexion, of a slim build and about 172 centimetres (5 feet 8 inches) tall."
Meanwhile, yesterday police found a body in the search for a missing teenage girl who fell into a reservoir from a dam in West Yorkshire. Emergency services were called to Baitings Dam near Ripponden, at 1.17pm on Wednesday and underwater searches continued throughout Thursday before a body was found on Thursday afternoon.
West Yorkshire Police said a formal identification process is yet to take place, but it is believed to be the girl's body. Her family have been made aware. Detective Inspector Laura Hall, of Calderdale's Safeguarding Team, said: 'While formal identification is yet to take place, the girl's family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
'My thoughts go out to her family and friends at this very sad time. Our enquiries are continuing into the death in order to establish exactly what happened yesterday, but we do not believe it to be suspicious.'

Greg Monks' family say they believe he 'got lost' in Portugal
Greg Monks was reported missing after leaving the main strip in Albufeira in the Algarve region during the early hours of May 28. The 38-year-old had arrived in the resort town the day before for a stag do. The last official sighting of Greg was at around 3.27am on May 28 as he walked past a property in Cerro de Aguia. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minutes walk from the main strip. Police launched a major search to trace Greg, but on June 4, officers confirmed the body of a man, a 38-year-old British citizen, had been discovered on vacant land in Cerro de Aguia. Greg's mum, girlfriend, and cousin – who had flown out to join the search - will return to Scotland today (June 9) without him, with the repatriation process 'set to take days', the Daily Record reports. Jillian Monks, Greg's sister, stated that the family 'will never truly know the full story' but that they believe he 'got lost'. READ NEXT: £25k raised to bring Greg Monks home from Portugal She said: 'We don't believe that anything untoward happened. Everything the police have told us adds up. 'We'll never truly know the full story. But we believe he just got lost and ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. 'It brings us some comfort knowing that Greg had all his belongings on him. He wasn't robbed, he still had his phone and his wallet. 'He had all his cards and cash.' We previously reported that a GoFundMe page was initially launched to support the search but had instead been updated to help the family bring Greg home and to plan his funeral. It has so far raised £34,000. Ms Monks highlighted that the family now 'has some sense of closure' as they plan to bring her beloved brother home this weekend. READ NEXT: Family pay tribute to Cole Cooper as body found in search She added: 'The generosity and support have been incredible. We're hoping to bring Greg home by the weekend. His mum, girlfriend, and cousin are going to fly home tonight. 'They wanted to fly back with him, but it has just not been possible. It has been the toughest time of our lives. 'We still can't believe this has happened, but we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. 'I think it just shows in places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. 'His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home. 'That's the kind of person he was.' Ms Monks further shared her family's anger over how they discovered Greg had died. She commented: 'I knew Greg had been found before my mum and dad were told officially by police in Portugal. 'They were waiting in a police station to meet with officers when their phones went off with notifications to say Greg had been found. 'It is shocking that this was allowed to happen.'

Bus driver who killed young girl riding bike on pavement jailed for four years
Martin Asolo-Ogugua, 23, was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday having pleaded guilty in April to causing Ada's death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. Ada was a keen gymnast and swimmer (Family handout/Metropolitan Police/PA) The defendant, of Southwark, south-east London, failed a drug-test at the scene of the incident and was found to have taken cannabis the night before. CCTV showed Asolo-Ogugua driving the bus west on London Road, with Ada on a footpath heading east on Watling Street before the defendant fell asleep and the bus drifted across the carriageway and into the path of the girl and her family, according to police. Ada's father, Bora, said: 'The images of that horrific moment remain seared into my mind. That scene replays endlessly, a constant reminder of the day my world fractured beyond repair. 'This tragedy happened on my watch, a father's ultimate failure. My world has been turned upside down, and with it, the foundations of my family have crumbled. 'My darling Ada. Our thanks are not enough to show our gratitude for you. We will honour your name with acts of magnitude. You will never be forgotten. 'We will make this story one of love and thanks that we owe everybody. Your presence, and passing, will leave a mark in this country and we will fight to make drug driving a part of its history.' Asolo-Ogugua was jailed for four years (Metropolitan Police/PA) Senior Crown Prosecutor Miranda Jollie called Asolo-Ogugua 'utterly selfish'. She said: 'Asolo-Ogugua was reckless and utterly selfish to get behind the wheel of a bus after consuming drugs and put many lives at risk that day. 'His actions have robbed a young girl of her entire life. Our thoughts remain with Ada's family and friends as they try to come to terms with their unimaginable loss.' Ada, a Turkish-British national, lived in Bexleyheath with her family and was a keen gymnast and swimmer. She attended a local primary school where she was described by police as a 'popular and happy pupil'. Her organs were donated and she went on to help six other people after her death, her family said previously. Detective Sergeant Sam Miles said: 'Asolo-Ogugua will have to spend the rest of his life regretting the night he chose to stay awake before getting behind the wheel of a bus with cannabis in his system. 'It's a night that has cost him his freedom and snatched away the life of an innocent little girl. 'Ada had her whole life ahead of her.' Asolo-Ogugua was disqualified from driving for seven years.
