With an Evil Empire's Power Comes Great Responsibility

New York Times13-02-2025

Most video games are power fantasies. You might have endless lives or be capable of shrugging off mortal wounds and clearing out dozens of bad guys with superhuman prowess.
The role-playing game Avowed wholeheartedly embraces the fantasy, yet stands out as a game that encourages the player to think about what it means to be so powerful. It asks us to engage with our power rather than simply benefit from it.
At its most predictable, Avowed manifests this empowerment with the typical medieval fantasy fare of swords and shields and wands and guns, which you will use to blast your way through any impediment blocking your path forward. But these battles are only a colorful distraction next to your character's real source of power: your mandate, as the envoy of a distant emperor, to decide how things should be run in the wild and untamed Living Lands.
Composed of a few independent fiefs, the Living Lands resemble the Caribbean islands before their settlement by European powers, complete with piratical touches like aquamarine coves, waterlogged ruins and flintlock pistols. You have arrived to root out the source of a mysterious plague and to soften the ground for your expansionist benefactor's future colonization efforts.
It's novel to play a game as, if not entirely a villain, an unsympathetic tool of power. Your empire, Aedyr, has a downright awful reputation in the Living Lands, exacerbated by your bloodthirsty colleagues known charmingly as the Steel Garrote. Throughout the game you'll be tasked with defusing diplomatic flare-ups caused by the Steel Garrote and its nasty leader.
In spite of the obligations placed on your character, Avowed is still interested in being a role-playing game. You can make decisions that affirm Aedyr's quest to conquer the Living Lands. You can try toeing the line and opt for a less violent, if no less hegemonic, version of colonial control. You can even reject your birthright, toss off the yoke of legacy and try to forge your own path forward in this new world. There is generous space within Avowed's narrative for each of these styles as well as various combinations in between.
Unfortunately, Avowed's great narrative wealth — its stories of compromised leadership, of trauma, grief, ambition and faith — is confined by a generic fantasy-game wrapper. A mushroom-laden mise en scène with a wild, Lisa Frank-style color palette cannot compensate for identical armies of lizards, spiders and skeleton archers.
Avowed's most impressive accomplishment is a narrative with weighty player choices, one that doesn't ignore your role as a representative of empire while allowing you to explore the opportunities presented by the power you wield. It's like getting to play as a trust fund heir, as either an oblivious privileged brat or someone with a desire to act ethically from a position of extreme privilege.
The compromised nature of your role, with its ambiguous agendas and split allegiances, does interact elegantly with Avowed's forking narrative structure. Partway through the game I was faced with a choice that would mean betraying my own countrymen. It was the correct decision, but it was made more difficult knowing that it would affect my existing relationships. It was a great narrative moment that highlighted how difficult it could be to challenge your own social group, even when that group was obviously in the wrong.
Not only do your decisions test old loyalties, but you'll frequently see how the ways you've shaped your envoy affect the bonds you make throughout the game.
By the end of the journey you'll have assembled a small team of misfits, all of whom have one thing or another to say about your choices and allegiances. They each have a stake in the Living Lands, whether it's Kai's parallel journey of finding his place apart from empire, Marius's torn attachment to his estranged people or Giatta's task of forming an identity apart from her parents' legacy. Being able to observe the state of things through their individual perspectives enriches the game's narrative and makes your own role that much more interesting.
It is unfortunate that the rest of the 40-hour game by Obsidian Entertainment — which is celebrated for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity — isn't as thoughtfully constructed. When you aren't hashing it out with the various faction leaders of the Living Lands or sharing in a personal story with an ally around the campfire, you'll be playing a watered-down version of better fantasy games.
With its first-person dungeon-crawling, two-handed combat and prolific amount of spells and skills, Avowed owes much to games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The inclusion of a three-person team that responds to commands selected off a radial wheel feels influenced by BioWare games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
There's just enough in Avowed to cover the familiar bases of an open-world R.P.G. experience, but enjoying it requires withstanding the drudgery of an immature game so you can make it to its adult narrative. Playing feels like skimming along the surface of a kid's cereal-colored world, clicking your way lazily through encounters on the way to an interesting story beat.
To reach the rewarding story moments, you are forced to engage in inconsequential and narratively light side quests, bounties and treasure hunts that provide the funds and raw materials necessary to upgrade or purchase the proper armor and weapons.
And unlike the battle mechanics in recent hits like Baldur's Gate 3, Avowed's are too simplistic to require much strategizing. As long as your gear is upgraded and you fire every spell and special ability that's off cooldown, you'll probably make it through most encounters just fine.
Avowed's story is powerful and full of vitality, but like the mysterious entity wreaking havoc on the Living Lands, it is trapped within a prison of convention.

Twenty years after earning his first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, Chris Brown is still racking up the accolades. Hard work continues to pay off for Breezy, who earned another 21 certifications from the RIAA on Friday (June 6), adding to his loaded trophy case. CB picked up the plaques for 'Loyal' and 'Forever' (both 8x platinum), 'Kiss Kiss' and 'Go Crazy' (both 6x platinum), and 'New Flame' and 'Deuces,' both of which reached 4x-platinum status. Brown ran into legal trouble in May, which nearly derailed his European tour plans. The singer was arrested in the U.K. on May 15 on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.' The charges were tied to an alleged London nightclub assault in February 2023. After initially being denied bail, CB secured bond on a lucrative $6.7 million bail package on May 21, putting his touring plans back on track. Take a tour of some of the best patios in Waterloo region and area: Jasmine Mangalaseril

Winter has finally released its icy grip, which means patio season is here in Waterloo region. "It's nice, after a long winter. This winter was really cold and long, and so it's beautiful to be outside," said Darko Zeljkovic while he sat on a downtown Kitchener patio. He's Bosnian and said outdoor culture is a regular part of European life. Colourful umbrellas, leafy trellises and cozy gazebos welcome diners with crafted cocktails, delicious wines and beers and a menu that celebrates the hot weather ahead. Most spots have accessible seating but call ahead to confirm if your furry friend can join you. Also, check socials and websites for restaurant's summer schedules of live performances and events. Whether you want a chili dog, an elevated dinner or something in between, many kitchens are focusing on locally grown and produced ingredients. You'll also find glasses and pitchers filled with sophisticated zero-proof or regular cocktails, beers or coffee drinks. In Cambridge, you can sip a Moment of Zen cocktail on The Blackshop's patio. They offer dishes like Nashville chicken sliders and sushi cubes from their social hour $8 bar bites menu. In Elora, enjoy the staff's favourite beef souvlaki under The Friendly Society's streetside zebra-striped umbrellas and have a Strawberry-Basil Smash. When Bardō Guelph's summer menu launches, they'll have produce from their Millgrove farm in dishes like the Mexican Street Corn pizza, and drinks like a Passionfruit Sour. Thanks to careful design, visitors won't feel crowded on the outdoor space at Waterloo's Bodega Rose. The kitchen is putting their final touches on the summer menu, but they offer a White Lotus and Rosé French 75, with new featured cocktails appearing every weekend. "We usually just base it off of what the weather is going to be, if there's events going on," explained Marshall Ward, Bodega Rose's front of house beverage manager. "For example, when Taylor Swift was in Toronto [last November] we did a whole week of Taylor Swift-themed cocktails." There's a garden-like patio tucked behind downtown Guelph's Miijidaa Café and Bistro. There, you can enjoy thin-crust pizzas or a venison burger as well as a Berries In Bloom cocktail. Still in Guelph, The Wooly will host Woolystock from June 20 to 22, to celebrate their 35th anniversary. You can enjoy the music and festivities from their porch, patio or biergarten. In Ayr, Willibald's patio overlooks the farm that inspires their menu. Some of their cocktails, like Rhubarb Rhubarb and the zero-proof Never-Grow Old, feature Ontario honey. At Fergus's Brewhouse on the Grand, you can get a table overlooking the river or hear it rush by from one of their new gazebos. It's an idyllic setting with an elderberry cocktail or a Thai Coconut Curry. With a new menu in the works, Guelph's Royal City Brewing will be adding mango and pineapple to their Berserker sour series, and a non-alcoholic citrus Radler. Kitchener's TWB's patio will reopen in mid-June and will continue hosting events and alternating food pop-ups by Kojo's Kitchen and Lord of the Tacos. They're launching a Pride beer and The Kultrun Raspberry Wheat this summer, and offering Willibald cocktails and Backed by Bees Mead. While it's not a brewery, uptown Waterloo's Hop House has dozens of beers to enjoy on their patio to go with their summery handhelds and options like blackened chicken with coconut rice. The Stockyards Brew Hall Restaurant, across from the St. Jacobs Market has a 250-seat patio. Selections from K-W Craft Cider joins their house-made brews, to perfectly pair with the restaurant's upcoming barbecue-themed menu. Elora's Lobby Bar is preparing for their first patio, where you can enjoy their Asian-inspired small plate menu. Their cocktails include the Mark and Marty gin cocktail, named after Elora Distillery's co-owners. Looking out over Roos Island in Kitchener's Victoria Park, the Boathouse DTK's cantilevered patio's next phase is expected to be completed in July. "It will have an outdoor bar as well as a smoker and grill area," explained operations manager, Shawn Flanagan. "We're going to create a little bit of an event [when construction is over]—a little party kind of atmosphere to introduce ourselves," he said. It's a perfect sunny spot for an evolving menu that mashes up familiar park concession food, elevated local dishes and barbecue to go with cocktails that capture the season. LISTEN | :

I replaced Wordle with my own AI-generated games — here's how to make yours

After months of the same Wordle routine, I decided to create my own word puzzle games using AI and honestly, I'm never going back. Instead of being limited to one puzzle per day, I now have an endless supply of custom games that actually challenge me at my skill level. You don't need any coding experience to make this work. Modern AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can generate fully functional puzzle games in minutes. I tested all three to see which AI creates the most engaging alternatives to Wordle. Turns out, AI is surprisingly good at creating games that keep you entertained during coffee breaks, commutes, or whenever you need a quick mental challenge. Here's how to build your own collection of word games that goes way beyond the daily Wordle limit. Log into ChatGPT and use this simple prompt: "Create a Wordle-style game for us to play. I have 5 guesses to pick the right word." The response is straightforward and gets the job done, delivering a functional word-guessing game that you can play immediately in the chat interface. ChatGPT's approach is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to jump straight into playing without any setup. It generates a clean text-based version where you make guesses and receive clear feedback about correct letters and positions. The interface feels natural to use: you simply type your guess and ChatGPT responds with helpful hints about which letters are correct and where they belong. While it lacks the visual pizzazz of colored tiles or interactive elements that make Wordle so satisfying, ChatGPT compensates with clear, well-organized feedback that's easy to follow. This option works perfectly when you need a quick mental challenge during your coffee break and want something that just works without any fuss. Head to Claude and use the exact same prompt: "Create a Wordle-style game for us to play. I have 5 guesses to pick the right word." Claude takes a completely different approach, actually building a functional game interface right within the chat using its artifact system. This was easily my favorite of the three options. Claude creates a fully interactive game with visual feedback, colored tiles, and a proper game board that updates in real-time as you play. Using the mobile app makes this feel like you're actually playing a legitimate Wordle alternative rather than just chatting with an AI. The interface is clean, responsive, and captures that satisfying feeling of seeing your guesses populate the grid with the familiar green, yellow, and gray color coding. It's such a good alternative because you get the complete Wordle experience without being limited to just one puzzle per day. Log into Gemini and try the same prompt. You'll get the most stripped-down version of the three, with minimal visual elements and a very basic text-based interaction. While ChatGPT at least included some emojis to add visual interest, Gemini keeps things extremely plain. However, Gemini does offer one unique advantage — it actively suggests using its Canvas feature to generate actual code for a standalone game. This makes it potentially useful if you want to create something you can share with friends or host elsewhere. The main issue with Gemini's idea of Wordle-style game is it occasionally makes errors that can break the game experience, like incorrectly stating that "fruit" isn't a five-letter word, for example. Once you've gotten past the hallucinations, Gemini played well and did exactly what it was supposed to do, delivering a functional word game that captures the core Wordle mechanics just without the frills. No surprise there. Claude delivered the most polished, interactive experience that actually felt like playing a real game rather than just having a conversation about one. ChatGPT and Gemini both provided functional alternatives, but Claude's ability to create a proper visual interface with real-time updates puts it in a league of its own for this kind of task. Honestly, Claude is criminally underrated as an AI assistant. It consistently delivers more thoughtful, nuanced responses and excels at creative tasks like this game creation challenge. While everyone's talking about ChatGPT, Claude quietly outperforms in areas that actually matter for everyday use and I've been quite vocal about how it's my favorite AI model out there right now. The fact that it can build interactive experiences right within the chat interface is just another example of how it's much more capable than people realize. Now you've learned how to create your own wordle-style game in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, why not take a look at our other useful AI guides?Check out 5 mind-blowing ChatGPT image prompts you'll wish you knew sooner and how to choose the right ChatGPT model for any task.
