‘Scary' Android change sparks fears as Google warns mystery AI will ‘control' WhatsApp and other apps even if it's OFF

ANDROID users have been left puzzled and concerned after Google announced plans to ramp up how AI works with their smartphone apps.
And there appears to be some confusion about how to turn it all off.

The tech giant has been increasingly pushing its new Gemini AI tools in face of competition from ChatGPT.
Users have received an email informing them that Google has "made it easier for Gemini to interact with your device".
"Gemini will soon be able to help you use Phone, Messages, WhatsApp and Utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off," the message reads.
It goes on to say "if you don't want to use these features, you can turn them off in the Apps settings page" but doesn't explain specific steps or provide a link on how to do this.
"If you have already turned these features off, they will remain off," they add.
The vague wording has raised concerns online of Gemini "getting more control", one X user wrote.
Another commented on a forum: "How scary is that? What could possibly go wrong?
"I don't want anyone or anything interacting with my phone, unless your calling me or sending an email or text message."
A third added: "Google is desperate to get us to use their AI before we get used to another one."
Google's email states that the changes will start to appear from July 7.

Major layoffs at Bumble dating app as co-founder says online dating business is at ‘inflection point'

Dating app Bumble will lay off approximately 30 percent of its workforce — some 240 employees — according to a regulatory filing made with the Securities and Exchange Commission by the company on Wednesday. The layoffs come as the company aims to cut costs and refocus on expanding its customer base. Staff impacted by this change will be leaving in the second half of the year. Bumble estimates it will save $40 million, which the Austin, Texas-based company intends to reinvest mostly in 'product and technology development' — the company is known to be exploring how artificial intelligence can be deployed. CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd, who also co-founded the dating app Tinder, made the announcement to staff on Wednesday, saying that the online dating business is at an 'inflection point.' In an email to Bumble employees, she said: 'The reality is, we need to take decisive action to restructure to build a company that's resilient, intentional, and ready for the next decade.' Herd stepped down as CEO at the start of 2023 but returned to the role earlier this year. A Bumble spokesperson told CNBC that the decision to reduce the company's workforce is in line with its strategic goals and was 'not made lightly.' 'Our focus now is on moving forward in a way that strengthens our core business, continues to serve our members effectively and positions us for future growth,' they wrote. The securities filing states that Bumble will incur non-recurring charges of between $13 million and $18 million for severance and other benefits paid to those employees being made redundant. Shares in Bumble have plunged since the company's initial public offering in 2021. Its market value has plummeted from $7.7 billion to about $538 million as of Tuesday's close. The online dating company's share price jumped 26 percent in lunchtime trading after the announcement. Just last month, during a company earnings call, Herd acknowledged that Bumble had lost traction with customers and would focus on providing users with better matches. 'We are accelerating our efforts to improve our member base and show members a more thoughtful selection of high-quality, relevant profiles,' she said in May. 'As we execute on our plans, we are very focused on building a sustainable revenue model with a healthy paying member base,' she added. In May 2024, Herd spoke extensively about how AI could be applied to dating apps to better match people with potential partners. She explained Bumble would be using AI to stay close to its main goal: 'A safer, kinder digital platform, for more healthy and more equitable relationships.'

Genesis GV60 Magma Looks Set to Shake Up the Performance EV Scene

Genesis Magma Division Aims to Rival Mercedes-AMG and BMW M Genesis is dead serious about its Magma sub-brand. The performance division, set to rival heavyweights like Mercedes-AMG and BMW M Performance, made its presence known last year in New York, with the GV60 Magma and GV80 Magma concepts. And to cement its credentials, Genesis will also race at the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship with the GMR-001 Hypercar. 0:03 / 0:09 Walmart is selling a 'heavy duty' $89 step ladder for $48, and shoppers say it's 'sturdy and secure' Watch More But before that happens, the production version of the GV60 Magma will first set foot on the global stage. The go-fast electric crossover has recently been spotted wearing thinner camouflage for the first time, revealing more exciting details ahead of its grand debut. Taking Design Cues From The Concept The GV60 Magma prototype that you see here tries hard to hide its bright orange paint, but it's evident on the antenna fin and on the brake calipers. And we can also see features that we can expect to find on the production unit. Off the bat, the polarizing twin lighting fixtures, front and back, are present. The bumpers are more aggressive, too, compared to the standard GV60, plus the spoiler appears to be different, albeit less aggressive than what's found on the concept. We can't comment on the black wheels for now as they seem to be placeholders, but hiding behind them are the bright orange brake calipers to match the body paint. Over 700 HP and 800-Volt Tech Expected in GV60 Magma Production specs of the GV60 Magma aren't definite at this point, though insider information reveals that it will have an 800-volt electrical architecture that allows ultra-fast charging. Output, on the other hand, is expected to go over 700 horsepower, which should be more than what its Hyundai twin, the brilliant Ioniq 5 N, produces. In terms of battery, sources say that the GV60 will be equipped with an 84 kWh battery pack that's good for 278 miles based on the more forgiving WLTC standard. This figure will, of course, go down if the GV60 reaches the US and goes through EPA testing. Launch Expected Later This Year Genesis hasn't announced a specific date for the GV60 Magma's grand debut. However, reports point us to a launch later in the year, just in time for the red-hot performance EV to be offered as a 2026 model year. Given this timeline, we expect to catch the GV60 Magma prototype more while testing on the road, perhaps giving us more information about its much-anticipated electric firepower. 3 Things to Know as Tesla Launches Its Robotaxi Service in Austin, TX

Tesla kicked off its new robotaxi service on June 22 with around a dozen Model Y SUVs, and Elon Musk said the launch was the culmination of a decade of hard work. The robotaxi pilot program, which is limited to Austin, Texas, is offering public rides for a flat fee of $4.20. According to Musk, Tesla built its robotaxi's AI chip from scratch in-house, and the launch includes a human safety monitor riding in the passenger seat. These safety monitors have been viewed with a finger consistently on a door's unlatch button, suggesting that the button was reprogrammed to function as an autonomous kill switch. Last month, the NHTSA contacted Tesla requesting answers to an extensive list of inquiries by June 19 regarding its robotaxi, including how the self-driving tech performs in low-visibility conditions. Late last week, the NHTSA noted that Tesla had responded and that the agency is reviewing its answers. The NHTSA added that it will update Tesla's public file after its review, but according to Electrek, Tesla has asked the agency to withhold its responses. 2025 Tesla Model Y — Source: Tesla Tesla's robotaxi raises safety red flags during first week While Tesla currently has a human monitor within the robotaxis and has emphasized its commitment to maintaining safety, the NHTSA has again contacted the automaker for additional information after reports of questionable autonomous driving behavior surfaced during the Austin launch. A video posted by a Tesla robotaxi passenger on X, formerly Twitter, appears to show one of the company's self-driving rideshare vehicles crossing a double yellow line, placing it on the wrong side of the road at about the clip's 7:16 mark. A separate vehicle can be heard beeping as the robotaxi re-entered its lane, but it's unclear whether this horn was directed toward the self-driving Tesla. Another video seems to show a Tesla robotaxi abruptly stopping in the middle of an intersection as it passes a police car. 2025 Tesla Model Y — Source: Tesla Assuming Tesla doesn't get held up by the NHTSA's investigation and its launch proves successful over a sustained period, the automaker now faces the challenge of meeting Elon Musk's ambitious scaling goal. Musk stated that he expects millions of Tesla robotaxis to be on the roads by the end of 2026. While Tesla has scaling advantages that robotaxi leader Waymo doesn't, such as mass-manufacturing capacity and a simpler self-driving design that doesn't utilize radar or LiDAR, Waymo's work dates back to 2009. Amazon-backed Zoox also recently announced the opening of its first large-scale robotaxi production facility in Hayward, California—a 220,000-square-foot site capable of assembling more than 10,000 vehicles per year at full capacity. Autoblog contacted Tesla to comment on its interactions with the NHTSA regarding its robotaxi, but didn't receive a response. Final thoughts It appears that scaling is the most significant challenge that Tesla's robotaxi faces on its path to success. The automaker will need time to test its pilot program and make necessary refinements, which could take years instead of Musk's goal of having millions on the roads by the end of 2026. Regarding the NHTSA, the worst-case scenario is that Tesla will have to recall its robotaxi tech or suspend the service until the agency is confident that issues have been addressed.
