Six Pinellas schools to get new principals, with more to come
Six Pinellas County schools are getting new principals for the upcoming academic year.
Parents from one of those schools on Tuesday urged the school board not to make the change.
Saying their school had endured enough turmoil during the past year, parents from Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8 called on the board not to replace Christopher Ateek, who has led the school for the past 16 years.
Madeira Beach Fundamental, which sits on the gulf, was displaced for several months after Hurricane Helene flooded its buildings. Ateek's removal after 'this crazy year' is 'ill placed,' parent Amy Stanton told the board during its special meeting. A handful of others spoke of how Ateek was the school's heart and soul, while many emailed board members to share the sentiment.
Board members, who met Tuesday to confirm the appointments before the current year ends, said they appreciated the parents' concerns about school leadership.
'These changes really matter,' chairperson Laura Hine said, calling principals the 'captains of their ships.'
At the same time, they said, superintendent Kevin Hendrick has the district's best interest at heart, and they trusted him to make appropriate personnel changes. Still, board member Katie Blaxberg and others suggested that in the future, the district do a better job of explaining principal shifts.
'An email on a Thursday to say, 'I'm not going to be back next year' and not give an explanation, it sends everyone into a bit of chaos,' Blaxberg said.
The board ultimately approved the shifts, including:
Ateek will transfer from Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8 to Pasadena Fundamental Elementary.
Mary Athanson will transfer from Meadowlawn Middle to Madeira Beach Fundamental K-8. Athanson has been a district educator since 2006.
Carmela Haley will transfer from Pinellas Gulf Coast Academy to Nina Harris Exceptional Student Education Center. Haley has been with Pinellas schools since 1994.
Carlmon Jones will transfer from John Hopkins Middle to Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary. Jones has worked in the district since 1999.
Donita Moody will transfer from Pasadena Fundamental Elementary to Azalea Elementary. Moody joined the district in 2003.
Michael Rebman will transfer from Azalea Elementary to North Shore Elementary. Rebman came to the district in 2005.
New principals have not yet been named for John Hopkins Middle or Meadowlawn Middle.
Nicole Wilson, the principal of Southern Oak Elementary, will transfer to assistant administrator of Pinellas Technical College. Southern Oak is merging with Walsingham Elementary to become a K-8 campus in the fall.
The board also approved 10 assistant principal shifts during its meeting Tuesday. Over three springs, Hendrick has replaced more than three dozen principals.

'Technical issue' forces Air India Boeing 787 to turn back to Hong Kong
The Being 787 Dreamliner has flown commerically since 2011. Photo by Prime Studio , courtesy of The Boeing Co., June 16 (UPI) -- An Air India Boeing 787-8 flight headed for New Delhi returned to Hong Kong shortly after takeoff Monday because of a "technical issue," Indian Media reported. The issue occurred just days after a similar Dreamliner crashed into buildings in Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing at least 279 people in the aircraft and on the ground. It was the first Dreamliner crash and only one passenger survived. "A passenger flight, AI315, operated by Air India from Hong Kong to New Delhi made a return to Hong Kong International Airport and requested local standby at around 1p.m. today," a spokesperson for Airport Authority Hong Kong said. Air India said in a statement that the plane returned to undergo checks "as a matter of abundant precaution." Some aviation analysts believe the wing flaps on the plane that crashed were not in the correct position. "It looked like the jet struggled to maintain lift," Dan Bubb, a longtime pilot and now airline historian at the University of Nevada. "Some pilots have speculated that the flaps may not have been set to the takeoff position. Historically, there have been crashes when flaps weren't properly configured." Authorities have ordered Air India to carry out more safety checks on all Boeing 787s. The Dreamliner has flown commercially since 2011.

Trump criticizes Russia being booted from G7
President Trump on Monday began the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in Canada by arguing it was a mistake to kick Russia out of the organization more a decade ago. 'The G-7 used to be the G-8. Barack Obama and a person named [former Prime Minister Justin] Trudeau didn't want to have Russia in, and I would say that was a mistake, because I think you wouldn't have a war right now if you had Russia in,' Trump said during his first meeting of the summit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump has made similar comments in the past. Russia was booted from the group in 2014 for illegally annexing Crimea from Ukraine. Russia in 2022 launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Trump and his administration have pushed for an end to the war, and while Russian and Ukrainian officials have met for direct talks, there has been little progress toward a cease-fire. Trump spoke Saturday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of several the two leaders have held since Trump began his second term. Trump is expected to have a meeting while in Canada with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G-7. Trump has met Zelensky in person twice, once at the White House during a volatile bilateral meeting and another time at the Vatican. Trump on Monday also signaled an openness to inviting China to be part of the G7 moving forward. 'I wouldn't mind that,' Trump said of China's inclusion. 'If someone wants to suggest China.'
