Tourist's finger left hanging off after shark attack in Jamaica
A British tourist feared for her life after she was savagely attacked by a shark in Jamaica.
Rachel Smith, 26, was on holiday with her sister when the fish bit through her left hand while swimming in Montego Bay.
Her ring finger was left hanging off as she watched 'blood pour everywhere' before being rushed to the local hospital earlier this month.
She was forced to fly to Ireland - where her parents live - for emergency treatment after doctors on the Caribbean island said the plastic surgeon was not available for two weeks.
Rachel, a pharmacologist from London, admitted: 'There was so much blood coming out I honestly thought I was going to die.
'I was in complete shock. My whole hand went numb so I thought my whole hand had been taken off.'
Doctors at Cork University Hospital in Ireland told Rachel that the tendons and nerves in her ring and little finger were ruptured as well as disconnected ligaments in the ring finger.
Despite the ordeal, with what is believed to have been a reef shark, Rachel said: 'I feel grateful to be alive and so grateful to have my hand.
'I have a long road of recovery ahead but I have a positive attitude and I believe I will get through it.'
She is hoping to regain movement in the next 18 months but has since been suffering from nightmares.
Her sister Lisa, who led Rachel out of the water and warned others to stay away, has also been 'terrified' ever since the attack on May 8.
'I honestly thought her fingers were gone - there was blood everywhere,' the 28-year-old said.
'At one point a vein burst and sprayed blood all over both of us. We were just crying and thinking she was going to die.'
She said the shark knocked both of them over with its body before taking a swipe at Lisa despite the flag on the beach indicating it was safe to swim.
She said: 'There were two young kids swimming by the rope, it's lucky it wasn't them.'
The sisters, who travel together every year, were planning to stay at the Hilton Rose hotel for two weeks.
Lisa added: 'I'm just so glad and grateful that she's alive.'

Jamaican boxing legend Mike McCallum dies aged 68
Jamaican boxing legend Mike McCallum, who was a three-weight world champion during the 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 68. McCallum died suddenly near his home in Las Vegas on Saturday (31 May), with the Jamaica Observer reporting that he was on his way to the gym when he fell ill and pulled his car off the road. He was later found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. Known 'The Bodysnatcher' due to his vicious punching ability, especially to the body, McCallum was the first Jamaican to become a boxing world champion – eventually winning titles at junior middleweight, middleweight and light heavyweight between 1984 and 1995. After retiring in 1997 with 49 wins, five losses and one draw from 55 fights, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2003. Jamaica's sport minister Olivia Grange wrote on Instagram: "It is with utter and complete sadness that I learned of the death of Jamaica's three-time World Boxing Champion Michael McKenzie McCallum. "I express my personal condolences to his mother, siblings and his children. On behalf of the Ministry of Sport, I take this opportunity to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of this legendary Jamaican. "We hope they find strength in this time of bereavement." His most famous fights came against the likes of Michael Watson, Steve Collins, James Toney and Roy Jones Jr, having turned professional in 1981 after winning welterweight gold for Jamaica at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. McCallum became world champion when he beat Ireland's Sean Mannion at Madison Square Garden in New York in 1984, claiming the WBA junior middleweight crown, and won his first 32 fights in the paid ranks, including successful title defences against Milton McCrory and Don Curry. His first defeat came in Italy against Sumbu Kalambay in 1988 when trying to add the WBA middleweight title to his collection but he did claim that belt a year later by earning a split-decision win over Herol Graham in the Royal Albert Hall in London. Successful defences came against Collins in Boston and Watson back at the Royal Albert Hall before avenging his Kalambay defeat in Monaco. December 1991 saw the first of a trilogy of fights against Toney over the course of his remaining career – with a split-decision draw and majority-decision loss in the space of nine months twice denying him the IBF middleweight belt. He did win a world title in a third weight division as a 38-year-old in 1994 when Jeff Harding was defeated for the WBC light heavyweight title but lost it to Fabrice Tiozzo a year later. His career then ended with losses to Jones Jr and Toney, the latter at cruiserweight. McCallum was hugely technically gifted as fighter and is undoubtedly the greatest Jamaican boxer of all time, as well as one of the best of his era, who leaves a huge legacy behind. St Kitts' new agent portal and upcoming fam In The Spotlight
Video transcript With St Kitts Tourism trade sales representative Suzy Trott and TTG Media's Charlotte Cullinan. Charlotte: Hello and welcome to our In The Spotlight video with St Kitts. Suzy, let's start by talking about the launch of your new travel agent incentive. Tell us everything that agents need to know. Suzy: Yeah, absolutely. We're actually celebrating the launch of the incentive, it's brand new, so we're really very excited. All agents have to do is just make a seven-night booking, and that would have to include flight and a hotel. And then basically all they simply do is register through They enter all the booking details – the check-in, the reference number. And then once their customer has actually checked in, we verify the booking with the particular hotel. And then when it's all verified, then we send the travel agent a £50 Love2shop voucher. And that's for every booking. So it's a really great incentive. Pretty much all of the hotels in St Kitts are bookable through Gold Medal, so you can access all hotels. Charlotte: Brilliant. Thank you. That's really generous. And you also have an online training programme. Where can agents find that and what can they expect? Suzy: We do and it's a really great opportunity actually for travel agents to come in, have a slightly deeper knowledge and understanding about the destination, about the culture, about our history, and also, more information about the hotels. There's new hotels opening in St Kitts. And again, agents, all they have to do is go to and they come in and they, they register the details through that particular portal. Charlotte: Wonderful.
