Injury carnage as Blues beat Eagles in the wet

Injury carnage as Blues beat Eagles in the wet

Star Carlton forward Charlie Curnow suffered a calf scare and West Coast captain Oscar Allen went down with what looked to be a painful knee injury in Carlton's 34-point AFL win over the Eagles in Perth.
The Blues kicked 10 of the first 11 goals of Sunday's match to set up the 12.14 (86) to 7.10 (52) victory in wet and slippery conditions at Optus Stadium.
Carlton improved their season record to 6-7, a massive improvement from their 0-4 start to the season.
There was plenty of injury drama in the final quarter, starting with Allen crumpling to the turf in pain behind play.
Allen looked to be favouring his heavily-strapped left knee as he slowly hobbled to the bench with the help of two trainers.
Eagles defender Harry Edwards, who damaged his shoulder earlier in the match, went off a short time later with a hamstring injury.
Allen is a high-profile restricted free agent, and is being heavily chased by Hawthorn and Brisbane.
But if his knee injury is serious, it would heavily affect his bargaining power for either a new deal at West Coast or a fresh start elsewhere.
Carlton's official line was that Curnow had suffered calf tightness, and the key forward did his best to play down any concerns after the match.
"It's fine," Curnow told Fox Footy.
"I've never really had a soft tissue before. I had a bit of awareness ... so we'll see how we go.
"It looks like it's going to be pretty fine. So I look forward to getting out against North Melbourne next week.
"You've just got to be really careful with those things."
Fellow star forward Harry McKay missed his second straight game with a knee issue, while gun midfielder Sam Walsh is out for five to six weeks after a hot spot in his foot was discovered on Friday.
Nic Newman (knee), No.3 draft pick Jagga Smith (knee) and Brodie Kemp (achilles) are already out for the rest of the season.
Blues ruck-forward Hudson O'Keeffe went down with a hamstring injury in the second half.
George Hewett racked up 35 disposals and seven clearances for Carlton, while Lachie Fogarty and Mitch McGovern kicked three goals apiece.
Harley Reid battled hard for West Coast with 28 possessions and five clearances.
But he could come under scrutiny for a swinging elbow that connected to the head of Lachie Fogarty after being chased down by the Carlton forward.

Eagles debutant Tom McCarthy, who was snared with pick No.1 in the mid-season rookie draft, was arguably his team's best with 31 disposals and 571 metres gained, while Bailey Williams kicked three goals.
West Coast's defence was simply overwhelmed in the first quarter as Carlton unleashed wave after wave of attacks in the slippery conditions.
Fogarty cashed in with three goals, while Mitch McGovern, Curnow, Tom De Koning and Zac Williams also got on the goal sheet in a 46-7 romp.
Hewett and Patrick Cripps combined for 22 disposals in the first quarter.
In contrast, West Coast had a whopping 11 players with two possessions or less to their name.
"We were pathetic in the contest," West Coast coach Andrew McQualter said of the first-quarter flop.
The lead raced out to 57 points midway through the second quarter before West Coast finally put up a fight.

Schoolkate triumph heads Aussies' pre-Wimbledon push

Australian Tristan Schoolkate has lifted his first grass-court title in England - only to celebrate his breakthrough triumph by cadging a lift to his next tournament from the man he beat in the final. Schoolkate's victory in the Ilkley Trophy was the highlight of a weekend when Australia's tennis men began some impressive muscle-flexing on the grass with Wimbledon in their sights. The rising Perth professional who began the year by taking a set off world No.1 Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, moved towards the edge of the game's top 100 with his win on Sunday. The traditional, picturesque grass-court Challenger event adjacent to the famous Ilkley Moor in Yorkshire has become a pre-Wimbledon staple and it was a real feather in the 24-year-old's cap to become the second Australian holder of the Trophy after Jason Kubler prevailed two years ago. Still driving me tomorrow, right? 😅Opponents today, road trip buddies tomorrow 🚗Schoolkate 🤝 Pinnington Jones#ATPChallenger | @the_LTA | @TennisAustralia — ATP Challenger Tour (@ATPChallenger) June 15, 2025 Schoolkate, who will rise to a new career-high of 106 in Monday's rankings, had to battle back from a set down to beat British wildcard Jack Pinnington Jones 6-7 (8-10) 6-4 6-3 and grab his first ever title on a grass court. As he enjoyed his victory at the trophy presentation, Schoolkate had the crowd laughing when he revealed that Pinnington Jones was due to be chauffeuring him to his next event 145km away at the Nottingham Open Challenger later on Sunday evening. "Hopefully, Jack still wants to take me tonight!" smiled Schoolkate. "He offered to drive us! I'll shout the Guinnesses!" Looking at the patriotic crowd, he added: "They all got behind you today - I tried to pretend that my name was Jack..." Schoolkate is yet to win a match on grass at tour-level but he'll go into Wimbledon qualifying in eight days time high on confidence after a tournament in which he had to battle through four three-setters to take the crown. Congratulations, champs!ATP Doubles Champions at Libéma Open 2025 🏆🎾#libemaopen #LO2025 #ATP250 #tennis — Libéma Open🎾 (@LibemaOpen) June 14, 2025 It was the second Australian title success of the weekend after the fledgling doubles partnership of Jordan Thompson and Matt Ebden picked up the title at Rosmalen in the Netherlands in just their first ATP tournament together. The duo, who'd previously won their only Davis Cup rubber together, beat British duo Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool 6-4 3-6 [10-7] on Saturday as Thompson celebrated his eighth tour-level doubles crown and Ebden his 13th - and first since he won Olympic gold with John Peers. The pair will next play in the prestigious Queen's Club Championship where the Australian men's contingent will be out in full force after two more battled through all-Aussie qualifying ties on Sunday to make the singles main draw alongside Thompson, Alexei Popyrin and Alex de Minaur. Aleksandar Vukic defeated Adam Walton 6-4 6-4 while Alex Bolt, the 32-year-old veteran world No.186 who always seems to come alive with the scent of the grass in his nostrils, upset world No.80 Chris O'Connell 3-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Vukic's reward is another all-Australian clash in the first round against Popyrin, while Bolt will play rising Briton Jacob Fearnley. De Minaur, back in business after taking a break following his early exit at the French Open, will open up against Czech Jiri Lehecka, while Thompson will play Spain's Jaume Munar.

LIV Golf's Marc Leishman returns to majors, gets in the mix at U.S. Open

Marc Leishman's bunker shot splashed out of the sand, took four quick bounces and rolled straight into the hole for birdie on the long, par-3 eighth hole at Oakmont. Suddenly, a name that was once no stranger to leaderboards at majors was up there once again. Not bad for a player who had every reason to wonder if he'd ever get another chance to play in one, let alone contend. The 41-year-old Australian, whose departure to LIV Golf three years ago generated few headlines but changed his life completely, shot 2-under 68 at the U.S. Open on Saturday. He made five birdies over his first 12 holes to briefly get on the leaderboard before leaving the course six shots off the lead. "I've been playing some of the best golf of my career this year," said Leishman, who is coming off his first LIV win, at Doral in April, then earned one of four spots at a U.S. Open qualifier in Maryland this month. "The schedule sort of lends itself to be able to work on your game between tournaments, and I was really able to prepare for this tournament." This is Leishman's first major since the 2022 British Open. He is already exempt for this year's British Open based on a third-place finish at the Australian Open in December. His move to LIV, where tournaments do not qualify for points in the world ranking that help decide large chunks of the field in major events, left the six-time winner on the PGA Tour in limbo when it came to ever playing in golf's biggest events again. "You wonder, of course, if you're ever going to get in," Leishman said. "But there was certainly no regret. My life is as good as I've ever been right now." The $24.8 million Leishman has won since heading to LIV, to say nothing of the reduced schedule and the 54-hole tournaments, help explain that. What went missing were the all-but-automatic spots in golf's biggest tournaments that go to the PGA Tour's top performers. Leishman played in 39 of 41 majors between 2012-22. For a time, he had a knack for getting in the mix. His three top-10s at the British Open in the 2010s included a three-way tie for the lead after 72 holes in 2015, before losing in a playoff eventually captured by Zach Johnson. The Aussie played in the second-to-last group on Sunday at the 2013 Masters (with fellow Aussie and eventual winner Adam Scott). "I like tough courses," Leishman said. "I like courses that separate the field, when it really punishes bad shots and rewards good shots." He had his share of both on Saturday. Good: the bunker shot on 8, and a 300-yard fairway wood on the par-5 12th that set up birdie and got him to 2-over par. Bad: Three straight bogeys on 14-16, though he came back with a birdie on the drivable par-4 17th and par on No. 18. Leishman left the course tied for 15th, six shots out of first, with the leaders still early in their rounds Saturday. He's well aware that a top-four finish here would add the Masters to his 2026 schedule. Either way, he is at peace with the choices he made, and where that left him — which in this case is with a late starting time in the final round of a major again. "I really enjoyed sitting down with my kids and my mates watching the Masters and the PGA," Leishman said of the year's first two majors. "I'd be more happy if people were sitting down watching me."
