Riviera Prep's Mason, Myles Fuentes are Dade 4A-1A Boys' Basketball Players of the Year
When adversity struck at the start of the 2024 calendar year, Riviera Prep sibling guards Mason and Myles Fuentes knew what needed to be done.
When it struck again just before the postseason this past February, the duo stepped up again.
A talented team built for a run at a third consecutive state championship lost one of its primary players when former four-star prospect Dante Allen transferred to Montverde Academy.
They later lost multiple players to injuries including 7-foot center Gus Guimaraes.
The Fuentes brothers didn't let the Bulldogs veer off course.
'Everyone had to pick up a big role, but we knew we had to step up our game even more,' Myles Fuentes said. 'We just had to come together as a team and as a family and we did it.'
The result? Mission accomplished.
Riviera Prep hoisted its third consecutive state championship trophy last month after winning the Class 2A state championship.
And so, Mason and Myles share honors of being this year's Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Boys' Basketball Co-Players of the Year for Classes 4A-1A.
'It's a huge accomplishment for both of us and special to share this with my brother,' Mason Fuentes said. 'We'll enjoy it and then the work begins again.'
Mason and Myles Fuentes, both juniors, played integral roles on the court to make the triumph happen as the Bulldogs beat Westminster Academy and later Miami Country Day to make it back to Lakeland.
Once there, Riviera took care of business with victories over Naples First Baptist and Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic to secure the 'three-peat.'
'This third ring is definitely the most meaningful to us because of all the sacrifice and adversity we worked through,' Mason Fuentes said. 'We pray to God every night and keep believing. And we succeeded. None of this is possible without Him.'
Mason, a three-star prospect ranked 28th nationally among point guards per 247Sports, averaged 12.4 points, 6.3 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game this season. Myles, a four-star prospect ranked 11th nationally among point guards per 247Sports, averaged 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and an even three assists per game.
The two will head into a critical offseason when they'll likely decide their college destinations.
And then the work will begin to try to end their careers at Riviera with a state championship sweep.
The Fuentes brothers are hoping to do something similar to what Columbus did this past season and elevate Riviera Prep's program to national title contender status.
'Hopefully we can get to the Chipotle National championship next year, we just have to keep working and keep our level of play high,' Myles said.

Kirby Smart, Georgia Add Another Recruiting Win as Surge Continues originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Head coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs continue to bolster the class of 2026 during an important recruiting period. Advertisement The Bulldogs had yet to surpass 10 commitments in the 2026 cycle at this time last month. After a number of high-profile official visits, though, things have certainly picked up. Marking the fourth commitment over the last two weeks, Georgia received a pledge from in-state offensive lineman Zachary Lewis on Monday. Lewis (6-foot-4, 270 pounds) plays for North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia, where he ranks as the No. 32 interior offensive lineman and the No. 53 player in the state (247Sports). Is Marco Sturm the coach to return the Bruins to Stanley Cup contention? ‘Absolutely, because I know this is my strength.'
'Absolutely,' offered a confident, blunt Sturm, 46, in the hours leading up to his morning news conference on Causeway Street. 'Because I know this is my strength.' Advertisement Coaching, Sturm has come to realize, is what he is 'made for,' and he is convinced his skill set is particularly suited for the Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up To be candid — a refreshing and embedded Sturm trait — he said he would not have been the right choice if, say, the Bruins of June 2025 stood on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup. The last of those was 14 years ago, just months after general manager Peter Chiarelli shipped him off to LA. They have just DNQ'd for the first time since 2016. The last of the old guard, Brad Marchand, played here in the 2019 Cup Final, and stands two wins from winning the Cup as the Panthers' elder renaissance man. Advertisement Opportunity? It's right here, a roster and playing attitude in need of a booster shot from behind the bench. Timing? After seven seasons of prep work — four as a Kings assistant, three more as head coach of their AHL Ontario Reign affiliate — it's clear Sturm believes his smartwatch is buzzing and about to blow off his wrist. 'My biggest strength, one of them, everything comes from the heart,' he said. 'So I am very passionate. I am a very passionate guy. And I believe I am a very confident guy — I know who I am and where I come from, and I believe that I am a good coach.' The career path came to him not by design. Sturm did not angle for coaching, give it so much as a 25-second shift's thought, during his 938-game NHL career. It found him some 10 years ago in that hockey hotbed of Boca Raton, where he was enjoying time with wife (Astrid) and kids (Mason and Kaydie), after wrapping up his NHL career with the nearby Panthers. 'We figured, OK, we'll stay here for a year,' said Sturm, speaking by telephone from his home some 20 miles north of Sunrise, where the Panthers routed the Oilers on Monday night in Marco Sturm played 938 games in the NHL, including 302 with the Bruins. Jim Davis/Globe Staff/Boston Globe A few years into a happy retirement, his final shifts as a pro spent with the Cologne Sharks in Germany, Sturm drew back into the rink on this side of the Atlantic when helping with son Mason's team at North Broward Preparatory School. Mason, now 21, just wrapped up his freshman year on the Bowdoin College blue line. Advertisement 'He's 6-2,' said Mason's proud, chuckling 6-foot father, once among the NHL's burners off the wing. 'I planned for him to be a defenseman, wanted him to use his size more. So he had no choice.' Daughter Kaydie, who gave up hockey for a love of basketball, plans to enroll at UMass Boston this fall as a freshman. 'We're an athletic family,' said their dad. 'They have been [after] me. 'Hey, Dad, should we buy a place?' And I was, 'Yeah, OK, no problem.' But now I have to anyway, because I need a place, too.' Of greater significance to his coaching arc was the letter Sturm dashed off to Germany's national team just months into his retirement. His aim: to be a US-based scout, offering counsel to German-born players here in the pro and junior ranks and in turn informing the national team of their progress. Once their prospects shipped off to North America, Team Germany didn't have infrastructure in place to keep tabs on their development. The response to Sturm's written cold call back home was favorable. 'So I went home in the summer and I met with the federation president, and I thought, 'OK, I am going to get the scouting job or something,' ' recalled Sturm. 'But no, he asked me to be the head coach and GM of the German national team. That caught me a little bit off-guard. But again, I didn't really hesitate.' Advertisement Sturm spent four seasons (2015-19) deeply involved with the national team, in myriad roles such as GM and head coach, including his work with the country's World Championship and Olympic squads. He became the essential guy they essentially didn't know they needed. 'I pretty much created the whole hockey department for the whole federation,' he said. 'I changed everything pretty much. Which is great. I think that is my strength, too, and I ended up winning the silver medal at the Olympics.' The silver came in the 2018 Games at PyeongChang, Sturm's unheralded squad taking the Olympic Athletes from Russia to the gold-medal game. Final score: Olympic Athletes from Russia, 4-3, in overtime. It remains Germany's biggest achievement on the international hockey stage, possibly a bigger lift than squeezing the Bruins into one of the two wild-card spots in the East. 'After that,' recalled Strum, 'then things really changed.' Related : Sturm was a hot NHL commodity. Rob Blake, then the Kings' GM, and former Bruins winger Glen Murray, their director of player development, ponied up the best offer, and by the fall of 2018 Sturm was aboard as a Kings assistant. Sturm's next game behind an NHL bench as head coach, this October, will be his first. There may be less risk in that than some Black and Gold followers believe. The Bruins' last three Cup-winning coaches, Harry Sinden (1970), Tom Johnson (1972), and Claude Julien (2011), began their NHL bench boss tours without ever coaching at all in the NHL, be it as head coach or assistant. Sinden also never played a shift in the league. Johnson had never coached anywhere, at any level, prior to succeeding Sinden weeks after the 1970 Cup win. Julien took charge of the Canadiens' bench early in 2003, after two seasons as their head coach at AHL Hamilton. Advertisement By Sturm's account, it sounds like he'll coach much like he played, and he'll want his new, unknown charges to do the same. 'A lot of emotion, lots of energy, I want those people who pay a lot of money [for tickets], I want them to feel it,' he said. 'But more importantly, I've got to feel it and the team's got to feel it. Every night. I think I am a very structured guy, on and off the ice. In today's game it is about fast pace and speed, put it all together, I think we will be OK.' Sturm also understands, and firmly believes, the NHL is not the league he played in for 14 seasons. It is a two-way conversation, coach-player. Acknowledging that his two best coaches were Darryl Sutter in San Jose and then Julien in Boston, he also believes their style, particularly from a coach-and-player-communication standpoint, too often plays to a deaf ear in today's 32-team, kid-centric NHL. 'It is a different time right now,' Sturm said. 'There are still players out there who you can poke and kind of go that route. But a lot of guys now, you really can't do that.' No one on the coach's side, he noted, 'followed up in the old days' when it came to criticism. 'You know, it was OK, rip you apart and it's done, that was it,' Sturm recalled. 'Today the teaching part comes in — that's where everything changes now as a coach. It is a fine line, when to be hard and when to be tough, when to teach. I think every player is different. Again, I am very competitive. As for my part of it, I want to be excellent every day and I demand that of my players. I think that is something I got from the Bruins, from the Chara, from the Bergeron, the way they practiced, the way they prepared every day. It doesn't matter if it is a game or practice, that has to come back. That is my first goal right away — to get that standard and that culture again like it should be.' Raiders hero cops brutal snub as NRL fans lash 'unwatchable' Lachie Galvin promo
Angry footy fans have taken aim at Fox League's relentless promotional video for Lachie Galvin before his first game for the Bulldogs on Monday. And the decision from the NRL 360 panel to snub Canberra milestone man Josh Papalii in favour of the Canterbury recruit has sparked backlash around the NRL world. Galvin enjoyed a fairytale debut for the Dogs after coming off the bench and scoring a late try in his side's 30-12 win over Parramatta in the King's Birthday clash at Accor Stadium. Galvin's name was chanted behind the bench as he prepared to come on and the 19-year-old was given a standing ovation when he entered the fray in the second half, before being mobbed by teammates when he scored a late try to all but seal the win. "It was (a relief). For the fans to get behind me (after) being here a week only is pretty cool," Galvin said after the match. "That's all in the past now. I just want to come over here and play good footy and enjoy my footy, that is the main reason I play and the reason I want to be here." Galvin was a late call-up to coach Cameron Ciraldo's 17-man squad after initially being named amongst the reserves. And his inclusion added another dimension to the Bulldogs' attack after Galvin took over the halfback role from Toby Sexton and forced the No.7 to shift into hooker. The try and victory for the Dogs capped off a rollercoaster few months for Galvin, whose release from the Wests Tigers continued to dominate the headlines. But suggestions that the buzz around the 19-year-old would die down after his move to Canterbury proved ill-founded as Fox League bombarded viewers with a feature promo on Galvin before and during Monday's game. Narrated by Matty Johns, the package contained a montage of highlights from Galvin's short career at the Tigers and touched on the significance of his signing for the Bulldogs. The promo aired numerous times in the lead-up to the game and even during halftime as the 19-year-old waited to get on the field. RELATED: Luai dragged into drama as Eels star faces ban over ref incident Slater under fire for Ezra Mam move as QLD axe skipper DCE 'Shouldn't be involved': Wayne Bennett hit with ban by NRL Many viewers described it as overkill and 'cringey' from the network though and likened it to a tribute normally reserved for a legend of the game. Galvin is undoubtedly a future superstar of the sport but the level of hype around the 19-year-old clearly turned fans off. "That package on Fox Sports about Galvin is so f***ing cringe. Massively over-rated and has accomplished nothing," one fan wrote on X. The Matty johns thing on Galvin is top level cringe. Unwatchable, so corny #NRLBulldogsEels — the digger (@darrenk06) June 9, 2025 Lachlan Galvin has achieved nothing in rugby league except a wooden spoon and he has a whole tribute dedicated to him by Matty Johns? What alternate universe am I living in??? #NRLBulldogsEels — kiki. (@silvermoonkiks) June 9, 2025 Enough with the Galvin piece already. I think we get the hype for this game because we are WATCHING IT. #NRLBulldogsEels — Jen (@gotothegymjen) June 9, 2025 Who gave the green light to showing the Galvin promo 4 times throughout the game. Promoting a drop ball and a forward pass ? #nrlbulldogseels — Seb (@Bazarati2096) June 9, 2025 Incredibly, the panel on Fox League's NRL 360 kept the Galvin love-fest going after the game by describing his try-scoring debut for the Dogs as their 'moment of the round'. The fact they chose to overlook Canberra great Papalii's record-breaking game for the Raiders on Sunday left many fans baffled. Papalii scored a fairytale double as he became the most-capped player in Canberra history with 319 appearances. He even kicked an impressive conversion out wide for the high-flying Raiders to help them record a gritty come-from-behind win over South Sydney. In terms of milestones, it couldn't have gone any better and Canberra coach Ricky Stuart said it cemented Papalii's status as one of the club's greatest ever players. 'This is not a rash statement, the greats of our club, the real greats, you've got Mal Meninga, Glenn Lazarus, Laurie Daley and Brad Clyde," the Canberra coach said. "You put Josh Papalii in there now and that is without any emotion, that's just fact, that's how good a player he is. 'If you had to pick the five greatest players to play for this club... there they are. I have had enough of FOX League making everything all about Lachie GalvinOh yeah Lachie Galvin got a try let's make that the moment of the roundPapalii's 2 tries and Conversion in his record breaking game was the best thing that happened this weekend#nrl #rugbyleague — Jarod (@jarod_h1) June 9, 2025 The #NRL wonder why so many fans are disenfranchised. Refs, easy target, incl. Bunker, BUT... the so called "experts", Braith, Buzz and the boys on 360 think Galvin scoring a nothing try on debut vs a 319* game record breaking vet who scored a double... P-LEASE!!!NRL fans wept! — Matthew Lippiatt-Sidman (@MLS_therealM3) June 9, 2025 And somehow his try was NRL360s moment of the round. Not a legend of the game becoming the most capped player in his clubs history, scoring a double and kicking a goal in the process… — Alan 𝕏 (@alanmans001) June 10, 2025 Everyone agrees but it's clear its only happening because for about a month every single Galvin story got an insane amount of clicks so now they're going to milk this cow to death — 9-2 and in desperate need of a bye (@pray4theoffszn) June 9, 2025 Pappa deserves every accolade from the weekend.A true warrior — Pottsy_80 (@HikingViking_80) June 9, 2025 with AAP
