Women Entrepreneurs tackle climate challenges in Iraq in partnership with Five One Labs
ERBIL, Iraq- -(BUSINESS WIRE/AETOSWire)-- International startup incubator, Five One Labs, is continuing its support of talented, diverse entrepreneurs through their two-day capacity building workshop in partnership with the International Organization for Migration.
This workshop, hosted in Sulaimani, Iraq on January 31, provided Iraqi female entrepreneurs with the knowledge and tools necessary to incorporate climate resilience, peacebuilding, and environmentally friendly practices in their businesses.
Prior to this, Five One Labs hosted two virtual roundtables that explored the intersections between sustainability, economic security, and women's empowerment.
The first roundtable united experts, entrepreneurs, and women leaders to discuss the connections between resilience-building methods and climate-induced security threats. The discussion focused on women-led ventures in Iraq, highlighting the active roles they play in addressing environmental issues and resolving conflicts. Focusing on long-term solutions, participants discussed trends, strategies, gaps in policies, resource accessibility, and the importance of collaboration across sectors.
The second roundtable focused on community-led collaborative approaches to climate adaptation and mitigation. Participants discussed strategies offering women the skills and resources needed to lead climate action and manifest as active decision-makers in creating sustainable futures. The discussion emphasized the need to shift cultural and social norms to support women's leadership. Policy recommendations included a demand for gender-inclusive approaches to climate adaptation planning, investments in women-owned sustainable businesses, and increased representation of women in environmental governance.
Building on these discussions, the capacity-building workshop focused on the integration of sustainable practices in women-led startups. Sessions explored circular economy, climate resilience and case studies across the region. Entrepreneurs gained valuable insights and established connections that will enable them to collaborate on future green initiatives in Iraq.
'At Five One Labs, we believe that sustainability and entrepreneurship go hand in hand. This workshop provided a vital platform for female entrepreneurs to gain practical skills in green business practices while fostering a community of innovators dedicated to environmental and social impact. By integrating circular economy strategies and climate resilience into their ventures, these women are not only strengthening their businesses but also contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future for Iraq.' - Savo Bakhtiar, Managing Director of Iraq | Ecosystem Growth
Participants left the workshop with expert guidance in financial planning and green entrepreneurship solutions to the transition to renewables, water scarcity, and waste management. Through the sessions, women entrepreneurs gained a better understanding of how to balance social and environmental impact with profitability.
'The Climate Connect workshop was a great opportunity for me. Being a part of a network where we all work towards a sustainable Kurdistan was very needed. We need projects like this to have more environmentally-friendly products.' - Shilan Shaban, founder of Shila Pigments and workshop attendee
Five One Labs will continue to support women-led initiatives that navigate a greener approach while fostering a network of entrepreneurs who work towards a more innovative, resilient, and sustainable Iraq.

Baghdad sues Iraqi Kurds over US deals
The Iraqi federal government's oil ministry has sued the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq over oil and gas contracts it signed with US firms, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said and a document showed. The legal challenge is the latest obstacle to the resumption of flows through the Iraq-Turkey oil pipeline that have been halted since March 2023, despite pressure by the administration of US President Donald Trump. Baghdad has said direct engagement between companies and the Kurdistan regional government, or KRG, without the federal government's inclusion violates the constitution, calling the deals null and void. The KRG has defended the agreements, saying they were based on existing contracts. A speedy resumption of exports from Iraq's Kurdistan region would help to offset any fall in Iranian oil exports, which Washington has pledged to cut to zero as part of Trump's 'maximum pressure' campaign against Tehran. Iraq, an ally to both the United States and Iran, is wary of being caught up in Trump's policy to squeeze Tehran. Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of the KRG, oversaw the signing of two energy agreements worth a combined $110 billion over their lifetimes with US companies HKN Energy and WesternZagros during his trip to Washington DC last week. He met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday and discussed the need to resume oil exports from Kuridstan through the Iraqi Turkish pipeline, a KRG statement said. Reuters has contacted the U.S. companies, but has not yet received a response. 'The timing of the gas deals is particularly significant, considering Iran's weakening position and Washington's ongoing pressure on Baghdad to reduce reliance on Iranian gas imports,' Iraqi energy analyst and a former manager at the state-run North Oil Co. Ali al-Obeidi, said. The agreements involve the development of the Miran and Topkhana-Kurdamir gas fields in the northern Iraqi city of Sulaimaniya. The three sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly about Iraq's legal action. Flows through the pipeline were halted after the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce ruled that Turkey violated provisions of a 1973 treaty by facilitating Kurdish exports without Baghdad's consent. EQIQ Doubles Venture Fund to $30M to Back Iraq's Growing Tech Sector
EQIQ, a venture capital fund and venture builder based in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), is expanding its fund size from US$15 million to US$30 million. Founded by partners with experience deploying over US$500 million in technology startups and delivering a 3.3x return, EQIQ focuses on both greenfield (seeding new ventures) and brownfield (scaling established startups) investments in Iraq's technology sector. The firm concentrates on developing integrated solutions across e-commerce, logistics, and fintech, with the aim of addressing structural gaps and delivering services to a wide user base. The fund was established by Mohamed Al-Hakim, a serial entrepreneur who began his first startup at age 15 and exited it at 19. Having grown up in Europe, studied at University College London, and worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs in London, Al-Hakim returned to Iraq in 2014 with the intention of contributing to the country's nascent tech industry. His track record includes launching one of Iraq's first fintech companies and leading Careem operations in Iraq and Jordan. Reflecting on the past decade, Al-Hakim notes that the operating environment has changed considerably. 'Iraq has significant untapped potential underpinned by a young, vibrant, and tech-savvy population that is hungry to achieve. The country is underserved in many sectors; capital has been scarce as investors have been cautious to enter a market they know little about.' 'We founded EQIQ as a platform to bridge the gap between capital and opportunity. There is plenty of both, but there is also a mismatch that keeps them apart due to market inefficiencies. The emerging tech ecosystem provides an opportunity for Iraq to catch up with the rest of the world quickly. Our mission is to support building Iraqi tech champions that will create significant value for Iraq, its population, and our investors.' The fund completed its first close in January 2023, securing US$15 million from a group of local and regional investors. As of now, EQIQ has invested US$8.5 million across five startups operating in social commerce, logistics, fintech, and education technology. Three of these ventures were co-created by EQIQ alongside founders from its wider network. The fund intends to allocate 80% of its capital to ventures within e-commerce, logistics, and fintech, sectors that can benefit from shared infrastructure, services, and customer bases.
