Half of Brits have ongoing feud in their family – including favouritism, personality clashes and affairs

The Sun22-04-2025

HALF of Brits have an ongoing feud in their family - with favouritism, personality clashes, affairs, and disputes over wills and inheritance common causes.
A poll of 2,000 adults found falling outs have resulted in family members not speaking (34 per cent), not attending milestone events like weddings (55 per cent), and severing ties entirely (74 per cent).

The average rift has lasted seven years and counting - but for 22 per cent it has carried on for 10 years or more.
While some tiffs have even been passed down from one generation to another (21 per cent).
The research was carried out to celebrate new U&Alibi drama, 'I, Jack Wright', which airs Wednesday April 23 and focusses on a family at war over a will – it stars Trevor Eve, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and John Simm, and was written by Unforgotten's Chris Lang.
In the study, 11 per cent revealed they, or someone in their family, has contested a will in court, while 12 per cent fear an inheritance could cause a family fallout in the coming months and years.
And they could be right – 57 per cent currently don't have a will, and of those who do, 25 per cent have barely discussed it with their loved ones.
A spokesperson said: "Feuds can tear families apart – impacting not just those directly involved but the wider family too.
'They've long been the source of inspiration for literature, theatre, cinema, and TV – so many of us can relate to such situations.
'And while money – much like in I, Jack Wright – is often the cause, the actual reasons for the squabbling tend to run much deeper.'
In hindsight, 86 per cent believe the dissension in their family could have been avoided, but 14 per cent are convinced it was always going to happen.
Khloe Kardashian reveals how family divides up '$60m' Hulu show salary and which sister demands producers cut footage
Three in 10 (30 per cent) think about the feud several times a week or more and 48 per cent admit it has impacted their mental health.
Perhaps as a result, 59 per cent think it's 'important' all bickering comes to an end - and 30 per cent think that will happen in time, but 49 per cent aren't so convinced.
That hasn't stopped some trying - 26 per cent revealed they or another member of the family have tried mediation or counselling to resolve the situation.
While 51 per cent of those directly involved in a feud, would be 'willing' to let bygones be bygones – if the other party involved made the first move.
However, even that wouldn't be enough for 29 per cent.
Carried out through OnePoll.com, the study found 23 per cent believe family in-fighting is just a natural part of family dynamics.
Although 34 per cent admit feuds between family members run especially deep.
A spokesperson added: "Losing a family member can bring families together – but it can also pull families apart.
'That person is no longer able to speak for themselves – answer any questions loved ones might have.
'And for television writers, this lends itself to all sorts of interesting possibilities – especially when you throw inheritance into the mix.'

I visited the cheap African holiday island that feels like Mykonos and Santorini with new easyJet flights

The walls and doors of the sleepy paths are a quirky, open-air gallery. The resemblance to the alleyways of Mykonos and Santorini is striking and my arty stroll ends at a small cafe under a sprawling canopy of trees in a sunlit square. But when I tell you a small cup of strong coffee here costs 25p, you'll know I am nowhere near the trendy Greek isles. The small town of Erriadh sits at the centre of the island of Djerba —which was used as a filming location for Star Wars — just off the south coast of Tunisia. And at its heart is Djerbahood, the passion project of a famous French art gallery owner who convinced some of the world's best street artists to travel to Djerba, and its inhabitants to allow their walls to be daubed. Now, more than 250 murals and sculptures have transformed the heart of the neighbourhood. Relatively undiscovered by us Brits, Djerba is a great-value option for those looking to explore beyond the Med favourites. Low-cost giant easyJet has launched year-round flights to the island from both London Luton and Manchester, with fares from just £115 return, and easyJet holidays has packages from just £373pp. The island's compact size means it's easy to explore its intoxicating mix of North African heritage and Mediterranean influences. Sizzling in summer, temperatures remain high all the way through to November and rarely dip below the 20Cs, even in the depths of winter, making it ideal for out-of-season sunshine. Five stunning, little-known holiday destinations Hotels line the soft white-sand beaches on the island's north coast, including our base, the 5H Radisson Blu Palace Resort & Thalasso. The resorts' vast pool, surrounded by loungers and cabanas, leads down to small sand dunes and a broad stretch of sparkling white sands dotted with straw parasols. Its contemporary rooms are spacious and bright, with marble-clad bathrooms and balconies or terraces to soak up that sunshine. 8 The Sun's Lisa Minot exploring Credit: Supplied 8 The fortress of Borj El Kebir has been protecting the island's inhabitants from invading armies since the 13th century Credit: Getty 8 Our base, the 5-star Radisson Blu Palace Resort & Thalasso Credit: Supplied With four restaurants, three bars and the biggest Thalasso spa on the island, you could be forgiven for not straying far. But the island's compact size means it's easy to explore its intoxicating mix of North African heritage and Mediterranean influences. Troglodyte dwellings In the island's capital Houmt Souk on the north coast, the minarets of mosques sit alongside the St Joseph's Catholic church. Jutting out on a headland surrounded by the Mediterranean sea, the fortress of Borj El Kebir has been protecting the island's inhabitants from invading armies since the 13th century. Today you can explore the impressive fortifications and admire the stunning sea views from its now thankfully peaceful ramparts. Houmt Souk's pedestrianised streets lined with shops and restaurants lead on to covered souks and a spice market, as well as a rather less fragrant fish market. There's plenty of opportunities for a bit of souvenir shopping, from local handi-crafts and clothes, to Pottery Square where you can buy colourful ceramics from just £2 with a little haggling. If you're in need of sustenance after all that shopping, look no further than El Fondouk. This fabulous conversion of an 18th-century caravanserai, or travellers' inn, is open daily for morning coffees and pastries in its sun-soaked courtyard – then fresh seafood with couscous, fish curries and meaty kebabs at lunch and dinner. Prices are also excellent given the quality, with main dishes from £8 to £12. Also worth a trip out from the excellent restaurants back at the hotel was Haroun, in the nearby marina. Its outside terrace comes in the form of an actual ship's deck, complete with rigging and ropes, and is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or two as the sun sets. Inside, the dishes coming out of the kitchen include traditional Tunisian specialities such as brik — crispy filo pastry parcels filled with meat or fish — as well as fried calamari and fresh fish. Luke Skywalker grew up in a troglodyte home in Tatooine (get it!) and you can visit locations from the smash-hit franchise. Again, prices are very competitive, with main courses from £13.50. And while Djerba has more than enough to keep a holidaymaker happy for a week, it would be a shame to come this far and not head over on to the mainland and into a galaxy far, far away. EasyJet has multiple tours you can take from Djerba, over the ancient Roman Road that crosses the sea to southern Tunisia. The centuries-old causeway is essentially a bridge, and as you travel the five miles you're rewarded with stunning views of shimmering waters on both sides. As you travel through the arid desert landscapes of the mainland, huge rock formations rise dramatically from the flat plains. The rugged mountains are home to the Berber people, and at Chenini we peek into the unique troglodyte dwellings carved into the rocky hillsides and admire the palm trees and olive trees growing around the oasis by the Chenini Canyon. 8 Strolling the streets of Tataouine, you can easily see how George Lucas was inspired to use the location for Star Wars Credit: Getty 8 Fans can visit locations from smash-hit franchise Star Wars Credit: Rex Strolling the streets of Tataouine, you can easily see how George Lucas was inspired to use the location for Star Wars. Gemma Collins makes first appearance after admitting she feels like she's dying

Gemma Collins launched Trainline's 'SlayStation' pop-up at King's Cross station today, encouraging commuters and party-goers to step in to get their hair and makeup done Gemma Collins was glowing today as she made her first public appearance since admitting she feels like "dying" while battling pneumonia. The 44-year-old brought full glam to King's Cross station in London as she launched Trainline's "SlayStation" pop-up, helping commuters and concert-goers prepare for their night out - offering free hair, makeup and selfie-ready moments to those heading to Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter Tour as well as people passing by. ‌ It comes as former The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) star Gemma, who is celebrated for her glamour, meme-worthy one-liners, and unapologetic self-confidence, was named the ultimate night out partner in a poll - receiving 27 per cent of votes by Gen Z - quickly followed by Katie Price (25 per cent) and Alison Hammond (22 per cent). ‌ The survey, commissioned by Trainline, also revealed that for three quarters of 18-34 year olds (75 per cent), the night out begins well before they step foot in the venue. With three quarters saying getting ready is one of the most important parts of the night, one in five Brits now plan their outfit and look up to one month in advance of their night out – with 70 per cent of Brits using time on the train to perfect their look. Speaking about her own experiences with nights out and looking back at the good old days, the GC said: "Listen, the best part of the night is the build-up. It's the getting glam, the playlist, the group chat chaos, and those deep, hilarious, 'why did we even start talking about this?' moments on the journey to the venue. SlayStation is all about bringing the glam – a bit of hair, a bit of makeup, and a whole lot of fabulous. If you're stepping out, step out ready to slay." Sarah Helppi, UK Country Director at Trainline, said: "At Trainline, we know that great nights out start long before you reach the venue – they start with the journey. Whether it's touching up your look up on the train, sharing music playlists, or those conversations that only happen en route, travel has become an essential part of the night. That's why we launched SlayStation – to celebrate the journey and make it as iconic as the destination." To help commuters and party-goers feel their best, SlayStation brought together professional hair, makeup and glam artists to King's Cross today. The free-of-charge event, held until 8pm on Saturday, is now sold out. ‌ Earlier this week, a bedridden Gemma took to Instagram to share an update about her health, revealing that she had been seriously unwell for a number of weeks. In her post, which included a photo of the reality TV star laying in bed, she wrote: "Hey guys sorry been quiet i have Pneumonia. I'm not as fast or on it as I usually am on the daily. I am still honouring my work commitments which is taking every bit of energy I have but will be back entertaining you all soon." In a further update on her Instagram Story, Gemma revealed she was receiving treatment via a drip and had been seen by a doctor. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs typically caused by an infection and while most people recover within two to four weeks, infants, the elderly, and those with heart or lung conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness and may require hospitalisation. ‌ Luckily, Gemma has not had to go to hospital, but speaking to The Mirror, she admitted that she feels as though she is "dying" as she said: "Because the Pneumonia is viral, no antibiotic is going to help me. I've been really short of breath and obviously I have work commitments that I would never not turn up to. I'm old-school, I would always fulfill my work commitments. "It's shocking, I've had it now for over three weeks and I had steroids given to me by my doctor. It was DJ Fat Tony's wedding and I had to take them to get through that, but I'm off them now and the sickness is really kicking back in. It's so frustrating because I normally have so much energy and I'm always loving life, but now I get really breathless really quickly and I feel like I'm dying."

OnlyFans star Lily Phillips will star in the first episode of the sixth season of Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over - and some fans of the TV presenter have expressed their disappointment Stacey Dooley has been criticised by some fans after it was announced that Lily Phillips will be starring in the new season of her TV show. The presenter 's show Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, which sees her spend 72 hours in the company of a wide range of characters and families, is returning for a sixth season. It will air on U and U&W later this year, with 23-year-old OnlyFans star Lily - known for having sex with 100 men in a day - starring in the first episode. ‌ As part of the series, Stacey will meet Lily in her London home to learn more about her career and what the content creator does. As news of the new season was announced this week, Stacey, 38, said: "I'm thrilled to be back for another series of Sleeps Over! ‌ "Truly, it's such a loved format and people always remind me of their fave moments when I'm out and about. We've got another 3 episodes that you're gonna love! The themes we touch on feel incredibly timely. As always, a sincere thank you to those families who agree to open their doors. Strap in!" U&W director of programming Adam Collings added: "Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over has become a U&W audience favourite, no doubt due to the array of families and their stories, but of course Stacey being at the heart and gaining unprecedented access to their homes. Her warmth and compassion allow for a safe judgement-free environment, giving viewers an open and honest conversation, which is what makes this series so special." After news of the upcoming season was shared on social media, many fans congratulated Stacey, but others expressed their disappointment at the fact that Lily will be starring in it. One wrote on Instagram: "Pretty grim giving that deviant airtime, not a single positive thing can come from the trainwreck of her life, screams if the worst click bait, expected better tbh." Another said: "Really disappointing, just don't think Stacey Dooley should be promoting or giving this girl a platform. Lowest derivative entertainment, a real regression in content from you Stacey." Someone else joked: "If she is sleeping over at Lilly Phillips' gaff I strongly suggest she gets the sheets fumigated!" ‌ However, some people were more supportive with one saying: "Omg wow this will be so interesting!!!!" Someone else added: "Can't wait. Love these shows x." Another praised Stacey for giving Lily a platform to talk about herself, writing: "This is so exciting! I was so touched by the documentary that came out about her and have been wanting to hear more about her. Stacey is the perfect person for this I absolutely love the compassionate and thoughtful way she covers sex workers." The Mirror has contacted Stacey Dooley's representative for comment.
