Kate Winslet becomes King's Foundation ambassador

Telegraph5 hours ago

Kate Winslet has joined The King's Foundation after telling the monarch she has 'got his back'.
The Academy Award-winning actress, 49, is joining the charity as an ambassador, following in the footsteps of Sir David Beckham, Sienna Miller and Sir Rod Stewart.
It comes after she joined the King, 76, at the foundation's awards ceremony in St James's Palace a fortnight ago, where she told him: 'Don't worry, I'll be all in – I've got your back.'
The Titanic star said she was thrilled following the announcement of her new ambassadorial role and noted her and Charles's shared passion for protecting the environment.
Winslet said: 'One of my passions is exploring ways that we can protect and promote the natural world – something I have in common with His Majesty.'
In a video marking the news, the British actress added that the foundation's work protecting the planet and encouraging young people to learn about the 'beautiful' countryside was 'deeply important' to her.
She said she was looking forward to collaborating with the other ambassadors on ways to make a difference through the charity's work.
'I am so thrilled to become an ambassador for The King's Foundation, particularly as the charity celebrates its 35th anniversary this year,' Winslet said.
She added: 'The King's Foundation does such fantastic work to prioritise and protect nature and our wonderful planet, in particular championing field to fork farming, as well as getting young people outdoors and learning about our beautiful countryside and how we can all play a part in protecting its future, all things that are deeply important to me and to so many of us.
'And it's been fascinating learning about what the foundation does over these past few months, and I am really looking forward to collaborating with the other ambassadors so we can discuss ways in which we can collectively make a positive difference.'
She joins fellow ambassadors Alan Titchmarsh, presenter Jay Blades, TV property expert Sarah Beeny and rugby player Maro Itoje, among others.
The ambassadors are expected to use their expertise and reach to support the King's charity's mission in its vision and strategy.
The King's Foundation works to support people and the planet through a sustainable and holistic approach, including education courses in preserving endangered traditional skills – such as millinery, embroidery and woodworking – and helping to revitalise communities through urban regeneration and planning.
Kristina Murrin, the charity's chief executive, said: 'It has been fantastic to get to know Kate and we are thrilled she was able to spend time with our students, alumni and Royal Founding President at The King's Foundation Awards earlier this month.
'We look forward to working with Kate to promote our work over many years to come.'
The charity, previously known as The Prince's Foundation, was founded by Charles in 1990 and aims to 'advocate for the change His Majesty wants to see in the world'.

The 1975 to headline Glastonbury Festival amid rumours of Lorde secret set

British pop rock band The 1975 will be the first headliners to grace the Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage this year when they perform on Friday evening. Made up of four school friends, the group, known for songs including Chocolate, Someone Else and About You, is comprised of singer Matt Healy, bassist Ross MacDonald, guitarist Adam Hann, and drummer George Daniel. The five-day celebration of music and performing arts, which opened its gates on Wednesday, will also see headline performances from veteran rocker Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop star Olivia Rodrigo. The BBC confirmed on Thursday that Young's Saturday Pyramid Stage set will not be broadcast live 'at the artist's request'. This year's line-up features a number of acts listed as TBA, as well as a mysterious act called Patchwork, which will take to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday. Among the music stars rumoured to be performing a secret set is New Zealand singer Lorde, whose fourth-studio album, Virgin, is set for release on Friday. The pop star posted a picture of the Woodsies stage to her Instagram account on Thursday, fuelling speculation that she could be the act listed as 'TBA' who will be performing at 11.30am. Earlier in the month, she told BBC Radio 2 that she is 'pretty keen' to see if she can 'pull some strings' and make an appearance at this year's festival. Other Friday performers include: Irish singer CMAT; hip-hop star Loyle Carner; rock band English Teacher; indie band Wet Leg; and Canadian star Alanis Morissette, who will take to the Pyramid Stage after a TBA act which will be performing at 4.55pm. Festival goers can expect a clear morning and temperatures reaching the mid 20s centigrade, according to the Met Office. Spokesman Stephen Dixon told the PA news agency: 'Friday should start relatively sunny, with temperatures reaching into the mid-20s. However, there will be a touch more cloud later in the day and into the evening.' Friday's line-up of events also includes a Q&A featuring Australian actress Margot Robbie at Pilton Palais and a Mountainhead Q&A with Jesse Armstrong, along with performances from psychedelic rockers Osees and Britpop veterans Supergrass. Saturday will see Irish rap trio Kneecap, who have seen one of their members charged with a terror offence, perform on the West Holts Stage at 4pm. Before the festival, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said it would not be 'appropriate' for them to perform their slot at Worthy Farm. Rapper Liam Og O hAnnaidh was charged for allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed terrorist organisation Hezbollah at a gig in London in November last year. Last week, the 27-year-old, who performs under the stage name Mo Chara, was cheered by hundreds of supporters as he arrived with bandmates Naoise O Caireallain and JJ O Dochartaigh at Westminster Magistrates' Court in 'Free Mo Chara' T-shirts. He was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing at the same court on August 20. On Thursday evening, the rap trio posted a film they executive produced to social media, titled Stop The Genocide, which includes testimonies from a Palestinian activist and plastic surgeon on the war in Gaza. Performing in the coveted Sunday legends slot this year is Sir Rod Stewart, who previously said he will be joined by his former Faces band member Ronnie Wood, as well as some other guests. Sir Rod's performance will come after he postponed a string of concerts in the US, due to take place this month, while he recovered from flu. Among the other acts expected to draw large crowds this year is pop star Charli XCX, who is engaged to The 1975 drummer Daniel and will perform songs from her sixth studio album, Brat. She is performing on Saturday night on the Other Stage, 15 minutes before the West Holts stage is graced by US rapper Doechii, another artist who has exploded in popularity in the last year. Other performers include: Prada singer Raye; US musician Brandi Carlile; Nile Rodgers and Chic; US pop star Gracie Abrams; Mercury Prize-winning jazz quintet Ezra Collective; US rapper Denzel Curry; and rising star Lola Young. This year, the BBC will provide livestreams of the five main stages: Pyramid, Other, West Holts, Woodsies and The Park.

Brian May's wife Anita Dobson breaks silence on Freddie Mercury secret lovechild claim - after woman took DNA test to prove she is the Queen star's daughter

Queen legend Brian May was left stunned by bombshell claims that his late bandmate Freddie Mercury fathered a secret love child – but wife Anita Dobson has admitted they're not convinced the story is true. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, the English actress, 76, revealed her own shock after hearing that Freddie allegedly fathered a daughter in the 1970s – and said Brian was equally floored by the news. She told the publication: 'I went "what?" I thought no? And I said to Brian: "Do you know about this?" And he said: "Do you believe this?".' The astonishing claim was made by biographer Lesley-Ann Jones, who says the Queen frontman secretly fathered a child during an affair in 1976 – and that she now has DNA evidence to back it up. Jones, who has written several books on Mercury, says the 48-year-old woman – identified only as 'B' – is the result of a fling between Mercury and the wife of a close friend. She alleges the late singer kept in contact with his daughter and even gave her 17 volumes of detailed personal journals before his death in 1991. The English actress, 76, revealed her own shock after hearing that Freddie (pictured in 1985) allegedly fathered a daughter in the 1970s – and said Brian was equally floored by the news But actress Anita is convinced that Freddie was too big a star for the news to have not leaked before. She said: 'There must be lots of people who have children that we don't know about. It's just because it's him. Because he's iconic. And the type of animal that he was, it seems inconceivable that he would have a child with someone we don't know about.' Anita added: 'If he does have one where is she - step forward. If she exists. Maybe it is just more fake news.' The new biography, titled Love Of My Life, claims Mercury shared the secret with his bandmates before he died – and that the woman now lives in Europe with a family of her own. In a handwritten letter included in the book, the woman writes: 'Freddie Mercury was and is my father. We had a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life. 'He adored me and was devoted to me. The circumstances of my birth may seem, by most people's standards, unusual and even outrageous. That should come as no surprise. It never detracted from his commitment to love and look after me. 'Those who have been aware of my existence kept his greatest secret out of loyalty to Freddie.' The star even reportedly had his own room in their family home, so he could spend as much time with her as possible, and called every day, even while he was touring with Queen. But actress Anita is convinced that Freddie was too big a star for the news to have not leaked before, she said: 'There must be lots of people who have children that we don't know about. It's just because it's him' (Anita and Brian pictured in May) Writer Jones has since hit back at those who claim the story doesn't stand up. She said: 'To those 'demanding' to see proof of a DNA test, otherwise they won't believe it - please rest assured that the requisite verification was obtained, legal teams have been involved, but that such measures are private and not shared publicly.' She also hit back at those questioning whether a cache of Mercury's secret diaries was faked using artificial intelligence. She posted: 'To those insisting Freddie Mercury's diaries were faked with AI, that his daughter 'doesn't exist' and that I've made the whole thing up: wait and see. 'His own story is his true story, told in his own words, is incredible. I love him all the more for it. You will too.' Flamboyant showman Mercury is known to have had several relationships with women including Mary Austin, whom he met when she was 19 and he 24. The couple lived together and were engaged for a while before Freddie came out as gay. Though they did not have children together, Mary went on to have two sons with another partner, while remaining close to Mercury for the rest of his life. He also had a relationship in the early 1980s with Austrian actress Barbara Valentin.
