India can become a global manufacturing, export hub for eyewear: Piyush Goyal
New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday met Peyush Bansal, Co-founder and CEO of Lenskart, and discussed how India can become a global manufacturing and export hub for the eyewear sector.
In a post on social media platform X, the Union Minister said he was 'pleased to learn' about the company's impactful social initiatives.
'Met Peyush Bansal, Co-founder and CEO of Lenskart, and discussed how India can become a global manufacturing and export hub for eyewear,' said Goyal.
'I was pleased to learn about the company's impactful social initiatives to expand access to vision care across the country,' he added.
In March this year, the eyewear maker laid the foundation stone for its manufacturing facility near Hyderabad. It would be one of the largest eyewear manufacturing facilities globally.
The facility will utilise cutting-edge technology to produce eyewear and related products, setting new standards for quality and innovation in the eyewear manufacturing sector, according to the company.
Meanwhile, the Commerce Minister held a comprehensive review of Invest India at a meeting held at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital. The minister emphasised on enhancing the performance, effectiveness and efficiency of Invest India to facilitate greater investments into India.
He also discussed avenues for further strengthening investor engagement, empowering MSMEs and boosting manufacturing in the country.
Invest India is the national investment promotion and facilitation agency of the Government of India and helps to expedite approvals for the setting up of manufacturing enterprises by speeding up clearances that are required, such as those for the allotment of land.
India's manufacturing sector is a significant part of the country's economy, contributing about 17 per cent to the GDP and employing over 27.3 million workers. The government aims to increase its share to 25 per cent by 2025, driven by initiatives like the Make in India policy and Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

Brescia [Italy], June 6 (ANI): Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that India and Italy have agreed to boost cooperation in key areas such as Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, technology, and the automobile sector. The announcement came after Goyal co-chaired the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation (JCEC) with Antonio Tajani, Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. In a social media post, Goyal shared details of the discussions held at the JCEC meeting. He said both countries have agreed to collaborate on Industry 4.0 for smart manufacturing, create stronger bridges between startups, expand technology partnerships, and establish Joint Working Groups in sectors such as space and automobiles. An MoU on agriculture was also part of the cooperation plan. Goyal said, 'Co-chaired the Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation along with @Antonio_Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Italy. Discussed and agreed to work together for: Industry 4.0 for smart manufacturing, Promoting a bridge between startups, Expanding collaborations in technology, Establishing Joint Working Groups in the Space, Automobile sectors, among others. The two leaders also participated in the Italy-India Business Forum, where Goyal highlighted the importance of the Italy-India Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. Goyal also spoke about the strategic importance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) and the potential of the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (India-EU FTA). In addition to official meetings, Goyal held discussions with top business leaders from Italy. He met Mario Gnutti, Vice President of Gnutti Carlo Group, a well-known name in the global automobile industry. AP showcases investment potential in electronics manufacturing
Tirupati: Andhra Pradesh is fast emerging as a prime destination for investments and industrial growth, especially in the electronics manufacturing sector. The Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) and Andhra Pradesh Electronics Component Manufacturing Policy draft workshop in Tirupati held on Thursday was aimed at giving a further boost to this sector. The one-day workshop was jointly organised by the IT, Electronics & Communications (ITE&C) Department, AP Economic Development Board, and the India Cellular and Electronics Association. The workshop saw participation from key dignitaries including Sushil Pal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and IT, who stated that the Government of India is actively promoting electronics component manufacturing through Production Linked Incentives (PLI) and other incentives. He lauded AP's proactive efforts and underlined the strong demand for electronics components in the market. Speaking at the event, Secretary of ITE&C Bhaskar Katamneni highlighted that the state government under the leadership of the Chief Minister is committed not only to 'Ease of Doing Business' but also to 'Speed of Doing Business.' He emphasised the abundant opportunities in the state for setting up industries and expressed confidence that Andhra Pradesh is crafting a more competitive and investor-friendly electronics policy compared to the Central Government's framework. Bhaskar revealed that the state is aiming to localise production of electronic components, which are currently being imported, and is formulating a forward-looking policy to attract manufacturers. Plans are already underway to establish 25 percent of these units in the southern Rayalaseema region. Tirupati EMC-2 cluster and the Kopparthy EMC are being positioned as key hubs for this expansion. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal confirmed that US trade team officials have reached India, with additional team members expected to arrive soon to participate in the negotiations. The talks come against the backdrop of recent statements by Goyal in Paris on June 1, where he outlined that India and the United States are working toward providing preferential market access to their respective businesses. Teams from both nations are actively collaborating on the proposed bilateral trade agreement framework. When asked about US President Donald Trump's announcement to increase tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50 percent, Goyal indicated that both countries remain committed to addressing trade issues through bilateral dialogue. 'Let us wait and watch... both the US and India share good relations and we will continue to work together to resolve all these issues bilaterally,' Goyal said. The current negotiations build upon commitments made in February, when US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans to negotiate the initial phase of a comprehensive, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement. The timeline targets completion by fall 2025. The proposed agreement is ambitious in scope, seeking to dramatically expand bilateral trade from the current $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030. This represents more than a doubling of trade volumes between the world's largest democracy and its most powerful economy. The negotiations in Delhi mark a significant step forward in what both nations view as a strategic economic partnership, with potential implications for global trade patterns and supply chain configurations in key sectors including technology, pharmaceuticals, defence, and agriculture.
