Alberta premier defends charging most Albertans for COVID-19 vaccines
EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says her government's new policy forcing many Albertans to pay out of pocket for a COVID-19 vaccination is about focusing on those who need it the most.
Smith says $135 million got "flushed down the drain" last year from doses wasted in part because of low vaccine uptake.
Her government will still pay for some, including for those who have compromised immune systems or are on social programs, to get shots.
Smith says she thinks low vaccination rates for COVID-19 in Alberta last year are because the vaccine "doesn't work particularly well."
The Opposition NDP says it's a cruel move to charge Albertans who want to protect their health and their loved ones.
Public health-care experts say fewer people will get vaccinated and it could lead to higher costs for things like hospital stays.

2 Healthcare Stocks to Keep an Eye On and 1 to Ignore
From novel pharmaceuticals to telemedicine, most healthcare companies are on a mission to drive better patient outcomes. But speed bumps such as inventory destockings have persisted in the wake of COVID-19, and over the past six months, the industry has pulled back by 7.5%. This drop was discouraging since the S&P 500 held steady. The elite companies can churn out earnings growth under any circumstance, however, and our mission at StockStory is to help you find them. Taking that into account, here are two healthcare stocks we think can generate sustainable market-beating returns and one we're steering clear of. Market Cap: $4.48 billion Pioneering the shift from bulky, short-term heart monitors to sleek, wire-free patches, iRhythm Technologies (NASDAQ:IRTC) provides wearable cardiac monitoring devices and AI-powered analysis services that help physicians detect and diagnose heart rhythm disorders. Why Is IRTC Not Exciting? Issuance of new shares over the last five years caused its earnings per share to fall by 5.6% annually while its revenue grew Cash-burning history makes us doubt the long-term viability of its business model 124× net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio shows it's overleveraged and increases the probability of shareholder dilution if things turn unexpectedly iRhythm's stock price of $138.38 implies a valuation ratio of 78.4x forward EV-to-EBITDA. If you're considering IRTC for your portfolio, see our FREE research report to learn more. Market Cap: $3.51 billion Pioneering treatments for a devastating childhood muscle-wasting disease that primarily affects boys, Sarepta Therapeutics (NASDAQ:SRPT) develops and commercializes RNA-targeted therapies and gene therapies for rare genetic disorders, primarily Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Why Do We Love SRPT? Market share has increased this cycle as its 51.3% annual revenue growth over the last two years was exceptional Earnings per share grew by 41% annually over the last five years, massively outpacing its peers Cash-burning tendencies have improved over the last five years, showing it could become financially independent one day At $35.74 per share, Sarepta Therapeutics trades at 3.5x forward P/E. Is now a good time to buy? See for yourself in our comprehensive research report, it's free. Market Cap: $14.82 billion With a network spanning nine states and serving primarily urban and suburban communities, Tenet Healthcare (NYSE:THC) operates a nationwide network of hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, and outpatient facilities providing acute care and specialty healthcare services. Why Do We Like THC? Share repurchases have amplified shareholder returns as its annual earnings per share growth of 30.7% exceeded its revenue gains over the last five years Market-beating returns on capital illustrate that management has a knack for investing in profitable ventures, and its returns are growing as it capitalizes on even better market opportunities Returns on capital are climbing as management makes more lucrative bets Tenet Healthcare is trading at $159.57 per share, or 13x forward P/E. Kittens born in South Jersey could have been exposed to rabies, health officials warn
Health officials in South Jersey are warning that a litter of kittens from Port Norris could have been exposed to rabies. The Cumberland County Department of Health said on June 13 that the kittens came from North Avenue near Main Street, and at least one of the animals has tested positive for rabies. Other kittens from the same litter have already been taken home by people in the community, so anyone who recently got a kitten from the North Avenue area is asked to contact the health department. The kittens and any other animals they came in contact with might need to be monitored for rabies, the department of the health said. Humans who spent time around the cats should also be checked for symptoms of rabies exposure. To protect the animals and people in your home, the health department recommends keeping pets vaccinated, avoiding contact with wild or stray animals, reporting bites and scratches and getting medical help right away if you think you've been exposed. Here's a look at some of the symptoms of rabies in cats and dogs, according to VCA Animal Hospitals: Symptoms of rabies in cats Agitation, nervousness and irritability Muscle spams that prevent swallowing Excessive saliva Paralysis Symptoms of rabies in dogs Agitation, nervousness and irritability Aggression, becoming highly excitable Signs of depraved appetite (eating and chewing stones, trash, etc.) Paralysis, distortion of the face and difficulty swallowing Symptoms of rabies in humans, according to the CDC Weakness, discomfort, fever or headache Itching at the site of the bite Anxiety, confusion, insomnia, delirium Hallucinations Fear of water Seizures

London borough to completely ban junk food adverts amid obesity crisis
A London borough is set to ban adverts with promote "unhealthy" food in a bid to reduce levels of obesity and diabetes. Officers at Kingston Council in south-west London have drafted a report detailing the policy which will clamp down on notices of "harmful products" on all council-owned estates, assets and any advertising contracts If the scheme is approved, the council will be responsible for ensuring proposed adverts comply with the policy for all new contracts, as well as existing ones upon renewal. A joint strategic needs assessment carried out in the borough in 2023 found that instances of diabetes are on the rise, with 2,000 cases linked to obesity, the BBC reports. It further found that the top five risk factors for poor health and early deaths are tobacco, alcohol, high body mass index, poor diet and high systolic blood pressure. The report noted that the policy would "support strategic and operational plans to address the rising rates of obesity and chronic disease in the borough". Similar healthy advertising policies have been introduced by 24 local authorities across the UK, including nine London boroughs. Kingston Council's people committee will vote on whether to approve the policy on June 17.
