Toronto police seeing increased reports of pickpockets targeting cellphones at public festivals

Toronto police say they're seeing a spike in the number of pickpockets targeting cellphones at public festivals in the city.
In a news release issued Thursday, police said in May and June 2025 they received 'increased reports' of cellphone thefts at locations where crowds gathered for public festivals throughout 14 Division in the city's west end.
Police didn't say which festivals the thefts occurred at, but popular events like the Taste of Little Italy and Do West Fest, among others, took place in that area of the city earlier this month.
'Suspects are stealing cell phones from bags, backpacks, pockets, purses, and those left momentarily unattended. In some cases, the suspects removed cell phones from zipped-closed purses and bag pockets,' police said.
Police are reminding anyone who's planning to attend a festival in the city this summer, of which there are several, to be 'mindful' of their belongings in crowded public spaces.
They advise to:
Stay alert when you're out at festivals or any large events.
Ensure your phone and other valuables are never out of your sight.
Make sure that your phone and other valuables are always secured close to your body.
Don't put cell phones in your back pocket where a thief can easily grab it.
Anyone who's been a victim of a cellphone theft is asked to contact police to report it.

Police arrested André LeBreton, who was 59 at the time, on June 21, 2022. He was released on conditions, pending a future court appearance. He was remanded into custody, pending his sentencing. LeBreton was sentenced on Tuesday to eight years in a federal correctional facility, minus time already served. LeBreton was also ordered to register with the National Sex Offender Registry for 10 years. After he's released from prison, LeBreton must abide by conditions set out by the court for 10 years, including not communicating with anyone under the age of 16, and not attending any place someone under the age of 16 is known to be. Police did not release any details about the incidents or the victims, as a publication ban is in place to protect the victims' identities and any information that could potentially identify them. Police launch impaired driving investigation after truck hits teenage cyclist in South Osborne
Winnipeg police have arrested the driver of a truck they say hit a teen cyclist in South Osborne on Thursday. During morning rush hour, police and cadets taped off a section of Morley Avenue at Osborne Street, near where a damaged bicycle was lying on the sidewalk. The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. and sent the cyclist, who police say is a teen, to hospital in stable condition with unknown injuries. The driver of a Toyota Tacoma was arrested as part of an impaired driving investigation, a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Man charged after driving with girlfriend partially out of vehicle: CKPS

(Chris Campbell/CTV News Windsor) Chatham-Kent police say they have charged a 27-year-old man after he was driving with his girlfriend partially out of the vehicle during an argument. On Wednesday at 8:50 p.m., individuals approached police to report an incident. They reported that at 7:45 p.m., at a Sheldon Avenue residence, a man engaged in a verbal argument with his romantic partner. Police say witnesses saw the man driving in reverse with the girlfriend partially inside the vehicle and the door open. As the situation escalated, police say the witness attempted to intervene by standing in front of the vehicle, resulting in the vehicle making contact with them. The man continued to drive forward, with the girlfriend still not fully inside the vehicle. Police later met with the man and his girlfriend at a residence in the south end of Chatham. Officers say the 27-year-old Chatham man admitted to being an unlicensed driver and acknowledged operating the vehicle during the incident. He was subsequently arrested and transported to police headquarters where he was charged with two counts of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle. He was later released with conditions and a scheduled court date of July 21, 2025.
