is yet to complete the already-delayed installation of water coolers in various markets across the city.
In fact, in some markets, the water coolers can be seen lying abandoned.The situation has deteriorated to the point where the water cooler structures built by the corporation a few months ago in Sector 15 now have advertisement hoardings on them.
"The installation of a water cooler in each market in Panchkula was undertaken to provide fresh and cooled RO water to the public, for a fee. The installation work, carried out by a firm, began in mid-June 2024. However, no progress has been made since then to expedite the project. No electric connections have been released for these coolers, and no concrete action has been taken so far," lamented SK Nayar, president of the

."The structures installed at the marketplaces obstruct vehicular traffic significantly, and also look unsightly. Now, various organisations have started using these structures for advertisements. If the project is abandoned, the structures on the roads must be removed. Otherwise, the project should be completed as a top priority since the summer season is at its peak. It should not be left as it is," he said.

AC industry to adopt temperature norms at no extra cost, seeks six months
Implementation will require manufacturers to reprogram devices or deploy software to comply with the revised temperature settings Press Trust of India New Delhi The air-conditioning industry will comply with the new temperature standardisation announced by the government within a couple of months, including resetting its inventory, without passing any additional costs to consumers. Leading room-air conditioner (RAC) makers such as Voltas, LG Electronics, Blue Star and Haier have welcomed the move and said the move will not only help the industry to grow sustainably by saving energy, but also optimise energy consumption, reduce grid load in peak summers and also extend the lifespan of the units. On Tuesday, Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said the government is working on a framework to standardise the default temperatures of air conditioners, including those in automobiles, in the range of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius. The industry will have to go for some minor modifications in the designs and settings of the remote control and its firmware (software embedded into hardware devices) for its implementation and needs up to six months for its implementation. Voltas MD Designate Mukundan Menon said the decision to standardise the operating temperature range of Room Air Conditioners (RACs) between 20 to 28 degrees Celsius, is a welcome step towards smarter, sustainable cooling. "This aligns with India's broader energy efficiency goals and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency's (BEE) commitment to promoting responsible energy use," he said. However, implementation will require manufacturers to reprogram devices or deploy software to comply with the revised temperature settings. At Voltas, we are ready to support this transition and remain committed to delivering efficient cooling solutions to Indian households, he said. Blue Star Managing Director B Thiagarajan said the issue of over-cooling had been under discussion for a long time. "The industry is very comfortable in implementing it. The question is that the remote firmware has to be changed and inventory has to be managed on a cut-off date," he said adding, "It is a simple job. So, there is no problem." According to Thiagarajan, a lower temperature does not necessarily make a human being feel comfortable. It depends on air circulation and humidity control to make a human being comfortable. Haier Appliances India President NS Satish said "this will have economic benefits to the country and environmentally also, as less power means a lower carbon Footprint," he said, adding for consumers, lower power consumption means electricity saving, which will put a little extra money into their pockets. With over 10 crore ACs in use and an additional 1.5 crore added annually, it is imperative to take decisive initiative to curb excessive energy consumption, especially during India's scorching summer months, he said. Voltas MD & CEO Pradeep Bakshi said: "It's a win-win situation for the public, government, everybody, for the nation. It's a good move by the government." When asked about the required time frame by the industry to implement the changes, he said this can be achieved in the next two to three months. "We have stocks and raw materials. So, now we will have to change the design a little bit and convert. So, in a couple of months, they will be able to achieve," he said, adding this also does not require "any cost involvement". LG Electronics India Spokesperson said this is a "progressive step" and places India among a select group of nations committed to responsible energy use. "The regulation brings a threefold benefit -- enhancing product longevity and performance, promoting environmental sustainability through improved energy efficiency, and supporting the health and well-being of consumers by encouraging optimal temperature settings. We believe this move will drive greater awareness and adoption of energy-conscious practices among users," he said. The Indian room air-conditioner market is one of the fastest growing markets globally, in which over 12 to 15 companies compete. The market is estimated to be around 15 million units. Power demand in Punjab hits record 16,838 MW, close to breaching 17,000 MW amid 48 degrees Celsius heatwave
CHANDIGARH: The power demand in Punjab on Tuesday touched an all-time high of 16,838 megawatts (MW) amid severe heatwave conditions, with maximum temperatures in the southern and western parts of the state soaring between 46 degrees Celsius and 48-degree Celsius. With ongoing paddy transplantation further adding to electricity usage, it is anticipated that the state's power demand may soon cross the 17,000 MW mark. Bathinda recorded a sweltering 47.6 degrees Celsius while Sirsa in neighbouring Haryana registered 46.2 degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Chandigarh office, these prevailing heatwave conditions are likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh for the next three days. As per data from the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), the state was drawing 10,243 MW from the Northern Grid, while its gross in-state generation stood at 6,600 MW. All state-run thermal and hydropower plants, including all four units of Ranjit Sagar Dam, were operating at full capacity. The breakdown of power generation at peak demand was as follows: State thermal generation: 2,020 MW Private thermal generation: 3,192 MW PSPCL hydropower generation: 950 MW Solar generation: 395 MW The current drawing limit from the Northern Grid is 10,400 MW, while the ideal in-state power availability is estimated at 6,600 MW. Meanwhile, coal stock across all thermal plants, both public sector-run and privately owned, is sufficient. At government-owned thermal plants, Lehra Mohabbat Thermal Plant has a 21-day stock, Ropar Thermal Plant has a 34-day stock, and Goindwal Thermal Plant has a 28-day stock. Among private sector plants, Rajpura has a 31-day stock and Talwandi Sabo has 23 days' worth of coal. In terms of power output, the Ropar Thermal Power Plant generated 680 MW, Lehra Mohabbat produced 830 MW, and Goindwal contributed 505 MW. Private sector plants also operated at high output, with Rajpura generating 1,325 MW and Talwandi Sabo contributing 1,860 MW. A PSPCL official said the department is prepared to take additional measures, including importing more power and optimising local generation, to meet the anticipated demand. However, an official, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned, 'If the power demand exceeds 16,800 MW, the consumers will start facing power cuts as it will surpass the transmission capacity infrastructure of PSPCL.' Yesterday, the state had also broken its previous record by reaching 16,249 MW, surpassing the June 29 peak last year of 16,089 MW. The water level at Bhakra Dam was recorded at 1,555.4 feet, which is 28 feet lower than the 1,584.2 feet recorded on the same day last year. At Ranjit Sagar Dam, the water level was at 506.9 metres, slightly down from 507.2 metres last year on the same day. The paddy transplantation in the state, spread over nearly 32 lakh hectares, began in staggered phases from June 1 to June 9, adding further pressure on the power supply. In its afternoon statement, the IMD Chandigarh Office said, 'It is observed maximum temperature over southern and western parts of Punjab are in the range of 46-48 degrees Celsius with highest maximum temperature reported over Bathinda (47.6 degrees Celsius). Maximum temperatures over northern and eastern parts of Punjab are in the range of 44-46 degree Celsius.' 'It is observed maximum temperatures over southern and western parts of Haryana are in the range of 45-47 degrees Celsius with highest maximum temperature reported over Sirsa (46.2-degree Celsius). Maximum temperature over northern parts of Haryana including Chandigarh are in the range of 44-45-degree Celsius,' it added. The IMD further stated that prevailing heatwave conditions are most likely to continue over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh during the next three days. Isolated severe heatwave conditions are also likely in southwestern districts of Punjab and Haryana during this period, with no large change in maximum temperatures expected in the next three days. A fall of 2-4 degree Celsius is likely thereafter. 'Whereas maximum temperature over northern and eastern parts of Punjab, Haryana including Chandigarh are likely to remain 44-46 degree Celsius during this period,' the statement added.
