Lincoln Riley affirms belief in Jayden Maiava as USC's QB1 Lincoln Riley tries to do with Jayden Maiava what he couldn't quite achieve with Miller Moss at USC.
It has been an interesting offseason for the USC Trojans at the quarterback position. After seeing Miller Moss, who started the team's first nine games in 2024, transfer to Louisville, the Trojans added five-star freshman Husan Longstreet and veteran transfer Sam Huard.
However, the team's most likely starter to begin next season will be redshirt junior Jayden Maiava. After transferring in from UNLV last offseason, Maiava started the final four games of the 2024 season for USC, and now enters 2025 with a full year of experience in head coach Lincoln Riley's system.
Following a recent practice, Riley affirmed his belief in Maiava as the Trojans' starter.
"Jayden's clearly the No. 1 quarterback right now," Riley said.
In his four starts at the end of last season, Maiava did a lot of very good things, but also some very bad things. The Las Vegas Bowl against Texas A&M was a microcosm of this, where he had several really bad turnovers early on, but made up for them at the end by leading a game-winning touchdown drive in the game's final minutes.
Entering 2025 as USC's presumptive starter, Maiava will look to build off of the good things that he did last season while cutting back on the mistakes. If Maiava is able to do this, he could emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big Ten.

In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look at former USC offensive lineman Khaled Holmes. Position: Offensive line Years played at USC: 2008-2012 Career highlight: Holmes redshirted his first season at USC in 2008, and appeared in three games as a backup offensive guard for Pete Carroll's 2009 team. Under new head coach Lane Kiffin in 2010, Holmes became the starting right guard. He moved to center in 2011, where he started the next two seasons. As a senior in 2012, Holmes was named first-team All-Pac-12 and was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, given to the top center in the country. Texas A&M is reportedly the 'frontrunner' for elite 2026 4-star wide receiver Two of Texas A&M's priority prospects in the 2026 recruiting class will take an official visit to College Station this weekend, as five-star wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster and five-star OL/DL Lamar Brown represents the two most essential prospects for coach Mike Elko and his staff that will make their final decision early next month. In terms of predictions, nothing has been clear regarding both prospects 'favorite landing spots over the past month, as Brown's recent OVs to Miami and Texas have shaken things up, while Feaster's recent OV to USC could complicate things moving forward. Still, it's impossible to ever keep the Aggies out of contention after several 2026 commits shut down their recruitment, combined with landing 2026 four-star safety Chance Collins over Texas Tech. Yes, OC Collin Klein and WR coach Holmon Wiggins also deserve credit, but it starts at the top, especially battling the likes of LSU, USC, Texas, and Alabama. From a production standpoint, Featster has delivered impressive statistics that align with his recruiting expectations. He wrapped up his 2024 sophomore season with a personal best of 57 receptions, 855 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Throughout two varsity seasons, Feaster has amassed 1,489 yards and 23 touchdowns. According to On3, Feaster is currently positioned as the 44th-ranked prospect in the 2026 class, the 5th-ranked wide receiver prospect, and the 5th-ranked prospect in Texas.
