A sip of wine, a craving for pizza, having a full calendar may all seem like harmless aspects of life but a scientist has revealed such seemingly innocent actions could be putting you on the brink of developing cancer.
University of California's Dr Raphael Cuomo claims chronic stress, fast food, alcohol, and drugs are an almost surefire way to set yourself up for a diagnosis with the disease later in life.
In Dr Cuomo's new book Crave: The Hidden Biology Of Addiction And Cancer, he noted that the body's repetitive desire to indulge in junk food and addictive behaviors drove the body to the deadly condition: 'Crave reveals how modern habits like vaping, binge-eating, and daily cannabis use hijack our biology.'
The expert added: 'These behaviors quietly damage the body's ability to repair itself. Over time, they open the door to cancer. It is not about genetics or bad luck. It is about the choices we make every day.'
Over 600,000 Americans and more than 150,000 Brits die of various cancers every year.
After studying 'millions of patient records' from across the University of California hospitals and spending months reviewing studies on cancer biology, Dr Cuomo revealed what he says are the top habits most likely to cause the destructive illness.
Fast food
Dr Cuomo called eating fast food 'slow poison', and noted that its effects could not be seen immediately but might cause long-term damage.
Earlier this year, researchers tested more than 300 foods sold at restaurant chains and in grocery stores across America for two microscopic toxins that have been linked to cancer, infertility, and autism.
They found that of all fast-food restaurants, the salad chain Sweetgreen and coffeehouse Starbucks scored poorest.
Sweetgreen's Chicken Pesto Parm Salad and Starbucks' Matcha Latte was found to contain the highest amount of phthalates, a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and transparent.
Studies showed that phthalates, commonly used in food packaging material, imitate the body's hormones and interfere with the production of and response to natural hormones like estrogen and testosterone.
Some phthalates were linked to certain cancers, particularly breast cancer and lymphoma.
However, Dr Cuomo pointed towards fiber consumption as a critical part of reversing damage as it would help improve gut bacteria, reduce inflammation, and keep cells healthy.
Smoking and drinking
Smoking causes about 30 per cent of overall cancer deaths in the U.S. and is a leading cause of lung, brain, neck, and bladder cancer.
Alcohol consumption's been linked to an increased risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colon, liver, and esophageal cancer. About 20,000 people die of booze-related cancers, annually.
Researchers in Germany found that a combination of drinking and smoking significantly raised the risk of colon cancer in young Americans.
Researchers analyzed two dozen studies, comparing regular drinkers and smokers with people who abstained from both.
Just 100 cigarettes in a person's lifetime - the equivalent of one per week for two years - was linked to a 59 per cent higher risk of colon cancer compared to people who never smoked.
They also found drinking alcohol every day raised the risk of developing early onset colon cancer by 39 per cent, even if it's just one or two drinks per day.
Alcohol and smoking have both been linked to cancer in the past, as they release chemicals that destroy DNA and cause cells to mutate.
Also, each daily can of beer or glass of wine further increased the chance by an additional two per cent.
In his book, Dr Cuomo noted that deep sleep is the 'most underestimated tool' to improve damage caused by addictions, such as smoking and drinking.
He explained that during consistent deep sleep, the body performs critical tasks such as repairing tissues, regulating hormones, consolidating memory, and clearing metabolic waste.
Stress
A 2024 study presented at the United European Gastroenterology congress by a group of Chinese researchers noted that a combination of chronic stress and anxiety has been linked to colorectal cancer in young people.
They explained when a body is under frequent stress, a number of healthy bacteria that live in the gut start dying off, making it easier for cancer to move in.
When the bacteria die off, tumors grow more quickly, leading to more aggressive, rapidly growing colorectal cancers.
Research from Trinity College in Ireland suggested these bacteria support the body's immune system, can protect against virus and bacteria, and prevent damage in gut cells.
Apart from this, chronic stress can lead to increased levels of cortisol and other stress hormones in the body that can promote cancer growth and its spread to various parts of the body.
A constant state of stress can also weaken the immune system's ability to effectively fight off cancer cells.
However, Dr Cuomo believes that there are ways to break free from all addictions and prevent cancer development in the body.
He said: 'The real threat is not a single cocktail or slice of cake. It is the craving that drives you back again and again.
'That craving is what wears down your body's defenses. I tell people to test their control. Start with one week of abstention. Not forever. Just seven days. That short reset reveals a lot.
'You learn what your body depends on. During that time, focus on physical recovery. Sleep deeply. Move your body. Eat real food.
'Spend time with people you trust. Addiction thrives in isolation. Recovery begins with reconnection.'
Additionally, Dr Cuomo suggested replacing the habit by engaging in some form of movement, such as taking regular walks.

And the Memory Crystal Episode 5 of The Librarians: Next Chapter begins with Vikram and Lysa discussing science and the marvels of what its done for our world. Lysa also brings up an astrophysicist called Roslyn Kirch, and suggests they go and check out her work. Her papers on superclusters of stats (called Quasars) is well-known and she's a big name in the community. The pair show up to see Rosyln during her big speech… but there's a problem. She winds up having a neurocognitive issue and has to be taken off stage. While Lysa believes this is simple medical science, Vikram is convinced it's a spell. The 3D map whirs and comes to life back at the Annex when they look into this, with the pendulum pin-pointing the College of Science Observatory as the area most likely responsible. Eventually Lysa concedes, thanks to her AI software, and believes it could well have been magic. This memory loss appears to be spreading around campus, as during Vikram's rant about smartphones making us more stupid, students and the faculty are also experience memory loss too. The group split up, with Connor and Lysa go hunting for the magical artifact, with Lysa distracting the teaching assistant while Connor sneaks into the library and grabs some important documents called the Culpepper papers. Culpepper was a 17th Century collector and at one point was in possession of the Crystal of Doctor John Dee. This is a magical artifact that could well be their memory loss trinket. Unfortunately, these papers are written in Enochian, which is a language only a few people on Earth know how to translate. Thankfully, we have Vikram. Now, the crystal is harmless in necklace form but once its taken out, it has the power to offer a single desired glimpse in the future. The cost, however, is a memory from the past. The necklace was initially in the London Museum but its recently been stolen, so it must be somewhere inside this College. Unfortunately, Charlie begins to lose her memories while stopping the teaching assistant from crashing his car (which he's forgotten how to drive), and it makes their job that much harder. With Charlie cautious around Vikram and his involvement with the library, given her memories are gone, Lysa and Connor break into the vault downstairs. Whilst there, they realize that Doctor Stonaris is our culprit, and he's using the telescope with the crystal to consume people's memories. The more people who look through it, the more powerful it becomes. Dr Stonaris locks the group in the vault though and decides he's going to go down as one of the best brilliant minds ever. Unfortunately, he doesn't realize the danger he's put them all in. The crystal is becoming overcharged, and in doing so, the ripple effects in our reality will be so profound that it won't just cause memories to erase, but the entire timeline as we know it. With Stonaris pressing ahead with his plan involving the telescope, Vikram decides to sacrifice himself to try and stop him. He steps into the spectral bubble, using his trained brain to stave off the effects of memory loss to stop Stonaris before it's too late. Unfortunately, Stonaris disrupts Vikram's concentration by bringing up Anya, whose memory causes him to lose concentration. Vikram uses the necklace shielding Stonaris from the memory loss, ripping it from round his neck and throws it up to Connor, who's in the process of stopping the telescope. The group are successful and manage to stop Stonaris. Thankfully, Charlie hasn't faded out of existence either. With the world saved, the good doctor is thrown into psychiatric care and our team prepare for their next case! The Episode Review This episode sees a simple but effective mission diving into the world of memory loss and how important our memories actually are to our wellbeing. However, it does come with some silly scenes too, like Charlie somehow managing to ride a bicycle as fast as a car? I understand the car is still spinning in circles but it's pretty amusing that she was able to do this. We do get a little rant here about smartphones and how they're counter-productive to our memory, while the main plot has a decent conclusion. The doctor wanted to be famous and I guess now he's become infamous in a way, thrown into lock-up to make sure he doesn't hurt anybody else. The team do have a nice chemistry now, although it would be good to see them branch out a bit and be tested beyond their capabilities. The earlier arguments between Lysa and Connor seem to have disappeared now too, which is disappointing as it cuts out some of the initial friction within the team. The US government is pressuring states to halt funding for puberty blockers for children and follow the UK's Cass Review. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which provides health coverage to more than 160 million Americans, urged directors to adopt the findings of the report, which concluded children who think they are transgender should not be rushed into treatment they may regret. In a letter sent to medical directors, seen by The Telegraph, the agency said that Britain has 'diverged' from the United States and that the National Health Service's new approach is more effective. Under Donald Trump, the US has quickly moved to ban all 'destructive and life-altering procedures' associated with transitioning children. Some 27 states have enacted laws that ban or restrict gender‑affirming care for minors. But puberty blockers are still available in many others. 'Several developed countries have recently diverged from the US in the way they treat gender dysphoria in children,' the letter reads. 'The United Kingdom, Sweden, and Finland have recently issued restrictions on medical interventions for children, including the use of puberty blockers and hormone treatments. 'In particular, the Cass Review, an independent review of the evidence in the United Kingdom, noted that despite the considerable research in the field of gender dysphoria in children, 'systematic evidence reviews demonstrated the poor quality of the published studies, meaning there is not a reliable evidence base upon which to make clinical decisions, or for children and their families to make informed choices.'' Led by Dr Hilary Cass, the review was prompted by concerns about the high rate of young people being referred to the Tavistock gender clinic in London, which referred children as young as 10 for treatment with puberty blockers. The final review, released in April 2024, concluded that too many children were being pushed towards medication with not enough mental health care. Dr Cass recommended that the most important treatment for the majority of children should be talking therapies instead of irreversible medical treatments such as puberty blockers. The letter went on to imply Britain is more effective in upholding the US government's commitment to 'do no harm to America's children'. 'In recent years, medical interventions for gender dysphoria in children have proliferated,' the letter added. 'These interventions include surgical procedures that attempt to transform an individual's physical appearance to align with an identity that differs from his or her sex or that attempt, for purposes of treating gender dysphoria, to alter or remove an individual's sexual organs to minimise or destroy their natural biological functions.' The letter also said medical interventions for gender dysphoria in children have 'proliferated' in America and the Cass Review, which is rumoured to be backed by Mr Trump, could be used by states to reduce cases. The move is a rare example of British policy influencing American direction under Mr Trump, who moved to ban puberty blockers almost immediately upon arriving in the White House. His administration has largely been critical of Britain's policies, repeatedly raising concerns about free speech. In May, The Telegraph revealed the president had sent a delegation to meet British anti-abortion activists who say their freedom of expression has been threatened. A five-person team from the US State Department spent several days in the country and interviewed campaigners. Trump has intervened on transgender issues Trans activists have long fought to retain puberty blockers as a treatment option for children with gender dysphoria. Democratic attorneys general in Washington, Oregon and Minnesota sued the Trump administration over its plans to pull funding from institutions that provide gender-affirming care. The US president has signed a number of executive orders targeting transgender people, claiming that it is a radical ideology driven to 'deny the biological reality of sex'. In January, he signed an order that aimed to restrict gender-affirming treatments for all young people below the age of 19 by asking federal agencies to stop endorsing interventions such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and surgery for minors. In July 2024, The Integrity Project at Yale Law School released a white paper which said the Cass Review had 'serious flaws'. It suggested that the review 'levies unsupported assertions about gender identity, gender dysphoria, standard practices, and safety of gender-affirming medical treatments'. The white paper concluded that the review 'is not an authoritative guideline or standard of care, nor is it an accurate restatement of the available medical evidence on the treatment of gender dysphoria'.

The people who are 'allergic' to humans

Some people are allergic to others – but the mystery of how this works is only just starting to be unravelled. Warning: This article contains sexually explicit language and themes. Maura believes condoms saved her life. Now 43 and living in Ohio, US, Maura says the problem first started in her twenties, when it slowly crept up on her. 'I noticed that my genitals burned after [unprotected] sex," she recounts. Maura (whose name has been changed to protect her privacy) didn't feel comfortable mentioning it to her partner. So, she'd wait until he left and then wash herself thoroughly. She tried changing the personal care products she was using, from soap to lubricant. But the problem only worsened, extending to swelling and redness. And it only happened after she came into contact with semen. Eventually she broke up with that man, and started seeing one who was dedicated to using condoms. "It wasn't an issue until one night when we were lying in bed after sex and my tongue suddenly began to swell," Maura recounts. "My partner saw what was happening, screamed, 'You're asphyxiating!' and grabbed my inhaler…he was able to cram my inhaler into the corner of my mouth, and he just started firing it. Luckily, I was still breathing enough to draw the medicine into my lungs." Maura, who also has asthma and a number of allergies, believes that the condom had leaked. She and her long-term partner are now even more careful about condom usage. Until it happened to her, she didn't know it was possible to be allergic to semen, she says. Though they're extremely rare, some people suffer severe immune reactions to other people's bodies. These often-misunderstood conditions can affect not just health, but also work, relationships and generally how someone moves through the world. But how exactly these reactions unfold, and what causes them, remains largely mysterious. Are they true allergies, or something else? As scientists begin to glean some hints, these strange responses are uncovering insights into the chemistry of our bodies and the quirks of the human immune system. From the skin Often, sensitivity to another person's body relates to the external products turning up in that body. For instance, the skin can carry synthetic fragrances, including in deodorants and aftershaves. Over 150 fragrances are linked to contact allergies. The trigger is not always clear. One American woman with a severe version of mast cell activation syndrome, in which infection-fighting cells start malfunctioning, developed debilitating allergic reactions to her husband's scent. Sabine Altrichter, a doctor at Kepler University Hospital in Austria, says that while the link isn't proven, some patients with mast cell disorders suspect that they're sensitive to natural body odours or chemicals emitted by other people's skin. The skin emits many compounds that contribute to body odour. These skin gases can include chemicals like toluene, which occurs in crude oil and is used to make products including paints and plastics. People can absorb toluene deliberately, for instance when inhaling glue to get high, or unintentionally, for instance through exposure at work. Toluene is also one of numerous chemicals in tobacco smoke. One group of people who might be able to shed some light on reactions to other humans are those suffering from the mysterious condition People Allergic To Me (PATM). PATM is an unusual and isolating phenomenon where others frequently develop allergy-type symptoms, such as coughing and choking, in their presence. In 2023, Yoshika Sekine, a professor of chemistry at Japan's Tokai University, and his colleagues investigated the skin gases emitted by those reporting symptoms of PATM. Of the 75 skin gases the team studied, toluene was especially likely to be present. People in the PATM group emitted 39 times more of this chemical, on average, than those without the condition. "Toluene is inhaled through the air during breathing. As a harmful compound, it is typically metabolised by the liver and excreted in the urine," Sekine explains. "However, PATM patients have a diminished ability to break down toluene, leading to its accumulation in the bloodstream and subsequent release through the skin," he says. Sekine notes that the very concept of PATM is still not widely recognised, and there are no diagnostic criteria for it. Meanwhile, sweat allergy generally involves sensitivity to one's own perspiration, rather than others'. As for hair, in the rare cases where allergies related to human hair have been recorded, the reaction has been caused not by an allergen in the hair itself, but allergens in external substances: for example, formaldehyde derivatives in keratin hair treatments, or a cat protein that gets into cat owners' hair. From bodily fluids Allergic reactions can also be triggered by specific allergens carried in bodily fluids. In one UK case, a woman with an allergy to Brazil nuts developed hives and shortness of breath after having sex with a man who had eaten mixed nuts a few hours earlier, even though he had cleaned his teeth, nails and skin in between. Nuts have also led to allergic reactions during kissing in people with severe allergies. While nuts are the most commonly reported allergen posing an issue during kissing, saliva has also induced allergic reactions following the consumption of fruits, vegetables, seafood and milk. Women with antibiotic allergies have reacted negatively after vaginal and (possibly) oral sex with people who had taken those medicines. But beyond these external allergens, proteins within certain bodily fluids themselves can also trigger a reaction. The one that some clinicians are familiar with, though there are still major gaps in awareness, is semen. Semen allergy, or seminal plasma hypersensitivity, involves developing symptoms ranging from a raised, itchy skin rash (hives) to the potentially life-threatening allergic reaction anaphylaxis, after exposure to this bodily fluid. It has been recorded mainly in people in their 20s and 30s, although there have been fewer than 100 documented cases overall, according to a 2024 paper. The allergen most frequently linked to this sensitivity is a prostate-specific antigen, a substance that can trigger an immune response, in the seminal plasma. This is the fluid, apart from sperm, that makes up the majority of semen, and the allergy is to a protein within it, rather than the sperm itself. It's not clear exactly what is occurring in the body in people with seminal plasma hypersensitivity, explains Jonathan Bernstein, a professor of clinical medicine, focusing on allergy and immunology, at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine in the US. Bernstein says that there aren't good animal models for seminal plasma hypersensitivity, or enough humans with the condition to enable large-scale research. Cases of semen allergy can be localised or systemic. When the symptoms are localised and limited to around the area of contact, this is usually reported as occurring with or around the vagina. But in one Spanish case report, a woman who had never experienced an allergic reaction after vaginal sex lost consciousness and developed other symptoms of anaphylaxis following anal sex. She was diagnosed with hypersensitivity to seminal fluid. A woman in the US also experienced swelling and rash in a non-sexual situation, when her skin came into contact with ejaculate. The local symptoms can include severe pain and burning immediately after intercourse. "It's [reportedly] like acid," Bernstein says. One of his patients described it as "like a thousand needles being stuck into your vagina." A person might be sensitive to the semen of multiple partners or just one, Bernstein notes. Diagnosis typically involves a skin prick test using a fresh sample of seminal fluid from a sexual partner. In his practice, Bernstein typically sees women in monogamous relationships with men, often when they're trying to get pregnant. Some people travel long distances to consult with him, as there aren't many authorities on semen allergy. Many patients get brushed aside or are started on aggressive steroid treatments because medical professionals don't know what to do with them, Bernstein says. However, Bernstein explains that his practice is able to help just about everyone with a semen allergy. There is a notable absence of data about semen allergies among men who have sex with men. Bernstein says he has never seen a case of this, though it's unclear why. He wondered if the symptoms could be related to the particular conditions within the vagina, though this doesn't explain the case where it occurred after anal sex between a man and a woman. Treatment options One previous treatment Bernstein trialled involved courses of injections of a partner's semen within or under the skin to desensitise the patient. This is similar to the treatment for post orgasmic illness syndrome, a rare and often-debilitating condition where men are sensitive to their own ejaculate. But this was costly: "patients were having to pay for that because there was a lot of laboratory work in preparing the samples," Bernstein says. Bernstein and his colleagues found that it was reportedly equally safe and effective to localise the treatment, in a one-time procedure of about two hours. First, they separated the sperm from the seminal fluid. Then they diluted the seminal fluid to one part in a million or one in ten million, depending on how severe the patient's reactions were. Then, at intervals of 15 minutes, they inserted the fluid into the patient's vagina. They gradually used stronger concentrations of the fluid, so that the patient developed a greater tolerance. Throughout, they continued monitoring the patient. As a result, "they don't tend to have many systemic reactions and they are able to tolerate unprotected intercourse thereafter" with at least that partner, Bernstein says. In general, hypersensitivity to seminal plasma remains often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. There's even less information about certain other fluids transmitted during sex. There is almost no published research on possible allergy to cervicovaginal fluid – a liquid secreted by the cells of the cervix and vagina, which helps to lubricate this region and provide some protection from pathogens. However, Marek Jankowski believes that he's seen at least one person with this condition. Jankowski, an assistant professor of dermatology and venereology at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland, says he once treated a patient who came to him after seeing a host of other doctors. The patient reported that about 30 minutes after vaginal intercourse, his genitals would become red and itchy. His face would also itch after cunnilingus. To the patient, this seemed like an allergy, but doctors ridiculed or rejected this idea, says Jankowski. However, Jankowski kept an open mind, looking up other cases of potential allergy to cervicovaginal fluid secreted by women during sexual activity. "Ultimately the patient responded well to antihistamines," he reports. The case also prompted Jankowski and his colleagues to carry out a study, published in 2017. The researchers surveyed other dermatologists as well as people who might be experiencing this condition. One-fifth of the dermatologists who responded had witnessed such cases, they reported, though many doctors remained sceptical that the condition existed. According to this research, sufferers reported redness, itch, burning, swelling and hives following contact. Their reports led Jankowski and his colleagues to estimate that allergy to cervicovaginal fluid was as common as semen allergy, which is thought to affect at least tens of thousands of people in the US alone. However, "the current level of evidence for cervicovaginal fluid allergy phenomenon is only circumstantial and further research in this field would be necessary," Jankowski explains. One difference between allergies to semen versus cervicovaginal fluid is that condoms would be unlikely to relieve the symptoms of any allergy to the latter, since condoms would not shield the groin and scrotum. But both antihistamines and repeat exposure appeared to help the survey respondents with their allergy to cervicovaginal fluid, according to the survey results of Jankowski and his coauthors. "As [the] majority of cases identified were young adults early in the sexual relationship, the flame of passion was apparently stronger than the discomfort, and repetitive [exposure] to the allergen led to desensitisation," Jankowski notes. This differs from seminal plasma hypersensitivity, which is not known to resolve itself naturally. For the people who are allergic to some aspect of their partner, the consequences can be grave. Maura believes that her semen sensitivity played a part in her and her partner's decision to not have children, because she expects that it would have been expensive to find a workaround that enabled her to avoid exposure to semen. The emotional impacts can be complex, for both sufferers and their partners. While Maura's relationship is safe and her partner is happy to use condoms, "he did tell me that he was offended by the idea that I was allergic to his semen," she says.
