Crime-spree gardens restored by community
Neglected gardens targeted by crime and anti-social behaviour have been given a facelift by the community.
Temple Gardens in Ripon was formerly a burial ground and the site of an independent chapel before becoming a public garden in 1986.
Police said in recent years the area had been plagued by drugs and alcohol misuse, numerous reports of dog fouling, drunken behaviour and vandalism.
Councillor Heather Phillips said that following combined funding of more than £15,000, students and volunteers had worked to restore the gardens and make them "somewhere people can be proud of".
A partnership was granted government funding of £8,850 and a donation of £6,200 from local developers to revamp the gardens on Allhallowgate.
Students and volunteers used the money to help clear paths, leaves and overgrown borders, pick litter and install planters, new gates and benches.
Phillips, who is the executive member for corporate services at North Yorkshire Council, said the area had been "sadly neglected" and "attracted negative elements" but had been transformed.
The Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, David Skaith, said the "amazing efforts of volunteers" were "clear examples of how we can strengthen our communities, combatting anti-social behaviour and delivering spaces that are safe and welcoming for all".

Motorcyclist in critical condition after crash
A motorcyclist is in a critical condition in hospital after a crash in Grimsby on Saturday afternoon, Humberside police said. Officers said a pillion passenger also sustained serious injuries and was receiving treatment in hospital. The force said a blue Kawasaki motorcycle was travelling along Heneage Road towards Welholme Road at about 14:20 BST when it was involved in a collision with a BMW near to the junction with David Street. Women arrested for drug driving after serious crash
Two women have been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a crash between two cars which left an 18-year-old critically injured. The teenager was driving a black Citroen C1 when it was in collision with a grey BMW near Halifax just after 20:00 BST on Friday. West Yorkshire Police said the BMW had been travelling on Hopwood Lane towards Queens Road when it collided with the Citroen, which was coming out of the lane from Gibraltar Road. Three passengers from the Citroen were also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Police said the BMW left the left the road after the collision and crashed into the front of a shop. The women who were in the BMW, both aged 25, were treated in hospital and have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drugs. They remain in custody and enquiries into the incident are ongoing, police said. Anyone who witnessed the collision or the circumstances leading up to it, particularly anyone with relevant dashcam footage, is asked to contact the roads policing unit. Man dies after being hit by van outside church
A man has died after being hit by a van outside a church in North Yorkshire. The incident took place outside the Jehovah's Witness Church at the junction of Westbourne Park with Seamer Road, in Scarborough, at around 09:25 BST on Wednesday. The man, aged in his 80s, was taken to hospital, but has since died. North Yorkshire Police said the driver of the silver Volkswagen Transporter van will be interviewed, but anyone with any information or dashcam footage is asked to get in touch.
