Johnson Charles' quick-fire 71 dominates as Sharjah Warriorz overwhelm Dubai Capitals
Johnson Charles ignited the Dubai International Stadium, leading the Sharjah Warriorz to a resounding nine-wicket victory on Tuesday night.
His breathtaking knock of 71 runs in 33 balls set up a flawless run chase in only 11.5 overs as the Warriorz maintained their undefeated record against the Dubai Capitals in the DP World ILT20.
An impactful show from the spinners including two wickets for 28 runs from Adam Zampa in the first innings restricted the Dubai Capitals to 131/9. The result gives the Warriorz's net run rate a significant boost, keeping them firmly in the fray for a playoff berth.
The powerplay made the chase a mere formality as Johnson Charles and Tom Kohler-Cadmore dominated the bowling to set the highest powerplay score of the season. The pair raced to 79 runs in just six overs, with Charles in particular wreaking havoc to smash five towering sixes, including a remarkable 24-run over off Zahir Khan.
Charles brought up his fifty in 21 balls, studded with six sixes and two fours. He continued his rampage until he was halted by Sikandar Raza in the 11th over. Charles departed after striking three fours and eight sixes, which included a combination of power hitting, deft touches and switch-hits.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore wrapped up proceedings in the next over with a clever boundary off Dushmantha Chameera. The Englishman finished with 54 runs in 32 balls, smashing eight fours and two sixes on his way there.
Earlier in the day, Adam Rossington bludgeoned a six and two fours as the powerplay saw 55 runs for the Capitals. Shai Hope played second fiddle to Rossington until the latter was accounted for by Adam Zampa in the seventh over for 37 runs in 23 balls.
Following the powerplay there was a steep drop in the run-rate. While Shai Hope occupied one end, batting with restraint, the wickets tumbled around him as the spinners dominated the middle overs. Zampa claimed another when he dismissed Gulbadin Naib, and skipper Sikandar Raza was removed by Ashton Agar. In the same over, Najibullah Zadran was run out to leave the Capitals in hot water at 85/4 in 12 overs.
UAE's Rohan Mustafa kept the pressure on with the wickets of Khalid Shah and Dasun Shanaka to expose the tail. Meanwhile Hope's stint at the crease came to an end for 45 runs in 52 balls at the hand of Tim Southee in the 18th over. Rovman Powell provided a flicker of hope with an unbeaten 32 runs in only 16 balls, peppered with three fours and two sixes but the Dubai Capitals finished the innings at a below-par score of 131/9 in 20 overs.
Player of the match, Johnson Charles said: 'They got off to a bit of a flier, but I love playing in Dubai because the conditions tend to get a bit skiddier, which suits my style. I thought Ashton Agar and Rohan Mustafa bowled exceptionally well and complemented each other perfectly. We managed to put the opposition under pressure. Ash and I have played a lot together in the past, and it's always a pleasure to play alongside him. It felt almost nostalgic since we haven't had many opportunities to play together recently.'
Dubai Capitals captain, Sikandar Raza said: 'I thought we were traditional in our batting. We needed more sweeps, reverse sweeps and switch hits. We went into a shell rather than being aggressive. Johnson is a fantastic player and done that to many teams; it was quite hard to bowl at him. He played a lot of great shots. One bad game is not going to derail us. We will try to get this game out of system and winning the next two is the target.'

Rohit Sharma's 81, coupled with the experience of bowlers Trent Boult (2-56) and Jasprit Bumrah (1-27) proved pivotal for Mumbai Indians claiming a spot in Qualifier 2, with a 20-run win over Gujarat Titans in Eliminator match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday. In their chase of 229, Gujarat Titans scored 208/6 in 20 overs at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh. With no Jos Buttler in the batting order, Shubman Gill (1) really needed to fire but fell to Boult's opening spell. With a massive chase ahead, the Kiwi pacer caught Gill plumb in front, which was confirmed after an unsuccessful review by GT, to start on the right foot. After a fiery opening two overs by Boult and Bumrah, Sudharsan and Kusal Mendis (20) began to shift gears and started an onslaught of their own. Sudarsan began proceedings by flicking Boult for six before Mendis, replacing Buttler, struck the left-arm pacer for consecutive maximums. The left-handed opener displayed an array of shots and carved the Mumbai pace attack through the gaps to all parts of the ground. Hardik Pandya decided to bowl for the first time in the power-play but was hit for three boundaries. Kishan and Malinga shine as Hyderabad defeat Bengaluru
Eshan Malinga and Pat Cummins triggered a batting collapse for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as they were dismissed for 189 in 20 overs in Match 65 of Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday. Sunrisers Hyderabad thus registered a 42-run victory over the Jitesh Sharma-led side and prevented them from surging to the top spot in the points table. In the first innings, Ishan Kishan's unbeaten 94 saw Sunrisers Hyderabad set a massive total of 231/6 in 20 overs. For the fielding side, Romario Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2-14 in two overs. In his first innings after confirming retirement from Tests, Virat Kohli (43) took the fight to the SRH bowlers. He began the proceedings with a late cut off Cummins, before punching Jaydev Unadkat through wide mid-off with authority in the next over. A pull shot towards deep mid-wicket, which just evaded Nitesh Kumar Reddy, off Cummins, saw the veteran take the charge from one side, while Phil Salt (62) struggled to get going, a contrast to their regular dynamics. Cummins smelled blood and brought himself into the attack. After an expensive opening spell, he added to RCB's woes as a full-length delivery saw Salt mistime it with Harshal taking the catch. Stand-in captain Jitesh Sharma (24), alongside RCB's regular skipper Rajat Patidar (18), acting as an impact player due to a finger injury, did not let RCB's chase falter with the former launching Cummins for a six off the first ball he faced. Incredibly enough, RCB were able to keep up with the massive run rate with 10 runs off Harshal and 16 off Undakat and reached 167/3 at the end of the 15th over before disaster struck. Reddy clamped up the pressure and allowed only four off the next six deliveries, which resulted in Malinga completely flipping the game on its head. A yorker saw RCB try to steal a quick single, but the pacer got to the ball first and dismissed Patidar, who was left in no man's land, with a direct hit. Malinga continued his fielding heroics by dismissing Shepherd on his first delivery by caught & bowled. The game completely seemed to slip away from RCB when Jitesh miscued a slot delivery straight to Abhinav Manohar at deep mid-wicket. Tim David (1), who was forced off the field after pulling up in the final over in the first innings, was struggling heavily and was concerningly unable to take singles. Malinga obliged by ending his innings with a lower full toss, saw the Aussie hit it straight to long-on. Cummins bowled over Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3) before Krunal Pandya (8) ended up hitting his own stumps with his bat. Harshal Patel rounded the game up for SRH as Yash Dayal (3) was caught in the deep to dismiss the side for 189/10 to seal the 42-run victory. Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Officials named for ICC World Test Championship Final 2025
The Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Officials for the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 at Lord's have been revealed. The showpiece between South Africa and Australia begins on 11 June and will see Chris Gaffaney and Richard Illingworth as the on-field umpires. The TV umpire will be Richard Kettleborough of England, with India's Nitin Menon serving as the fourth umpire. The match will be overseen by Match Referee, Javagal Srinath of India. Gaffaney and Illingworth, of New Zealand and England respectively, stood in the previous Final in 2023 between India and Australia. The Englishman Illingworth, has been named as an on-field umpire in all three ICC World Test Championship Finals, having also done so in the inaugural edition in 2021. He is the current ICC Umpire of the Year, having claimed the David Shepherd trophy for a fourth time in 2024. Gaffaney made his Test umpiring debut in 2014 and served as one of the on-field umpires for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Final alongside Illingworth last year. Kettleborough previously served as the TV Umpire for the 2021 Final between New Zealand and India. Kettleborough made his Test umpiring debut in 2010 when he oversaw Sri Lanka's meeting with the West Indies in Galle. He has stood in the finals of multiple ICC events, including the Men's Cricket World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. Menon makes his debut in the World Test Championship Final, having umpired at Test level since 2019. He officiated at the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup 2021, serving as the TV umpire in the Final, before becoming the youngest umpire to officiate at an ICC Men's Cricket World Cup when he stood in the 2023 edition. ICC Chairman, Mr Jay Shah said: "We are pleased to announce an experienced team of match officials for the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord's, marking the culmination of a highly competitive two-year cycle of Test matches played around the world. 'We strive to select the most qualified and deserving officials for all matches, and we are confident they will perform admirably.
