No plan to frame bike taxi policy, says Karnataka transport department
BENGALURU: With the Karnataka High Court ban on bike taxi operations nearing on June 15, officials of the transport department said they will go ahead and implement the ban. There is no plan to frame a bike taxi policy, which will legalise their operations, they added.
Hundreds of bike taxi riders from Bengaluru and across the state have been meeting Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and senior officials of the state Transport Department, telling them that the ban will affect their livelihood.
They have been urging them to frame a bike taxi policy in the state and allow them to run bike taxis. However, senior officials of the Department said personal vehicles are only meant for personal use and they cannot be used as bike taxis.
Karnataka was the first state in the country to come out with an electric bike taxi policy- 'Karnataka Electric Bike Taxi Scheme 2021'. The scheme allowed operation of electric bike taxis but the scheme was withdrawn in 2024.

Construction cannot happen near protected sites without ASI's permission: Karnataka HC
The Karnataka High Court ruled Monday that construction activities cannot be carried out near protected sites within a particular radius without the permission of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as prescribed by the law. The order was passed by Justice M Nagaprasanna in response to a petition filed by a resident of Mangalore. The Mangalore resident had come into possession of a property after a partition suit in 1993. After subsequent challenges and appeals to the same, he was allotted a share of 8.8 cents of land in the Thota village of the Mangalore taluk. In 2023, the City Corporation granted permission to construct a house with an approved plan. After the construction reached a certain stage, ASI issued a stop notice on the grounds that the construction was within 150 metres of the Mangala Devi Temple, a protected monument. The resident approached the High Court with the petition after his representation for a no-objection certificate (NOC) was denied. The court stated in its order, 'It is to be noticed that framers of the Constitution were conscious of the need to shield the monuments and places of historic importance from spoliation and disfigurement… It is the obligation of the State to protect every monument of historic interest.' The petitioner's counsel stated that there was no impediment in granting the NOC as the construction was in the regulated area rather than at a distance where construction was prohibited. He stated that, as per images from Google Earth, it was at a distance of 151 metres from the temple. It was also submitted that the ASI estimate of 64 metres using Google Earth was erroneous, and the petitioner was doing a renovation that was permitted under the law (by bringing down and rebuilding an older construction). The State counsel argued that the constructed property was indeed at a distance of 64 metres where construction is prohibited. The counsel also said that the construction done so far should not have been sanctioned without an NOC from ASI. The bench also did not accept the claim of 151 metres distance, and said, 'It is deliberately shot from a different angle and enlarged so that the distance would change. The respondents (ASI) have placed a Google Earth image taken by them, which clearly depicts that the property which is being constructed is within 64 metres of the protected monument…. The statute clearly bars any kind of new construction, but permits only repair and minor renovation.' Apart from directing the petitioner not to go ahead with the construction, the court also ordered a departmental inquiry against the erring officers who granted permission for the construction contrary to the law.

Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, who is facing fraud and money laundering charges amounting to ₹9,000 crore, has opened up about the downfall of Kingfisher Airlines in a podcast interview with Raj Shamani. Reflecting on the demise of Kingfisher Airlines, Mallya pointed squarely to the 2008 global financial meltdown. 'So agreed then it worked in your favour till 2008. What happened then? Simple. You ever heard of Lehman Brothers? You ever heard of the global financial crisis, right? Did it not impact India? Of course, it did,' he said. He continued, highlighting the broader economic fallout: 'Every sector was hit. The money stopped. It got dry. The value of the Indian rupee also took a hit.' Kingfisher Airlines, launched with much fanfare in 2005, quickly gained a reputation for luxury service but struggled financially as economic conditions worsened. Mallya claimed that he had approached then finance minister Pranab Mukherjee with a plan to downsize operations. 'I went to Shri Pranab Mukherjee... and said I have a problem. Kingfisher Airlines needs to downsize, cut the number of aircraft, and lay off employees, as I can't afford to operate under these depressed economic circumstances,' he said. According to Mallya, his plea was met with resistance. 'I was told not to downsize. You continue, banks will support you. That is how it all started. Kingfisher Airlines has been forced to suspend all of its flights. Kingfisher Airlines has been struggling. At the time when you asked loan, the company was not doing that great,' he said. His 'fair trial' reply On the podcast, Mallya also addressed the label of 'fugitive' and challenged the public perception of him as a thief. Fair enough, I did not return for reasons that I consider are valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead, but where is the 'chor' coming from… where is the 'chori'?' he asked. Earlier this year, Mallya told the Karnataka High Court that the ₹6,200 crore he owes to Indian banks has been 'recovered multiple times over.' He requested a full accounting of the amounts recovered from him, United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL, now under liquidation), and other associated parties.
