Over 200 participants take part in the 2025 Shamrock Splash

Yahoo03-03-2025

Shiver me timbers! On a cold, sunny day, over 200 people took part in this year's 15th annual Shamrock Splash.
The event took place at noon at East Boston's Constitution Beach, where divers plunged into the icy cold water.
The event raises money for the Save the Harbor/Save the Bay's Better Beaches Grant Program.
Participants, or splashes as the fundraiser calls them, were treated to free drinks and warm food after swimming, thanks to their partners at Sam Adams, Downeast, Dogfish Head, Topo Chico, Goldpeak, The Daily Catch, and Bono.
Splashers were also encouraged to wear costumes; as the fundraiser puts it, 'the zanier the better'.
Winners of the costume contest and the biggest fundraisers will win free JetBlue roundtrip flights to any destination.

‘Cherry on top of our honeymoon': Haverhill couple goes viral after gifting the Pope a White Sox hat

It's not every day you get to meet the Pope, let alone gift him a hat of his favorite Major League Baseball team. However, for Kelly DeStefano and her husband, Gary, they did just that. The Haverhill couple, and diehard Bostonians, were celebrating; they had just gotten married at Sacred Hearts Parish back on May 25, and decided to visit Rome and to get a chance to meet the Holy Father during his Weekly General Audience on Wednesday. Before they left, Kelly's cousin, Paul Breen, gifted them Chicago White Sox hats and reminded them that His Holiness is a huge fan of the Southside baseball team and said it wouldn't hurt for them to wear the hats to try and get the Pope's attention. The newlyweds were there for the Sposi Novelli, meaning that during the Pope's general audience, they recieved special seating for their recent marriage. Then came the moment when they finally got the opportunity to meet the Pope. Gary DeStefano gifted the Pontiff the cap. 'He's so down to earth,' Kelly said, " he laughed when my husband pulled out the hat and jokingly said something in regards to 'we'll be in trouble but [the Pope] won't.'" Kelly called the experience 'The cherry on top of our honeymoon.' Congratulations to the newlyweds! This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Marion authorities rescued three people after boat capsized in Buzzards Bay

Marion First Responders reported that they rescued three people from Buzzards Bay after their boat capsized. On Wednesday, around 12:46 PM, reports came in that three people fell in the water near Bird Island after their boat overturned. Members of the Harbormaster Department were dispatched and had located the three individuals in the water wearing life vests. They were safely brought aboard the Harbormaster Patrol Boat. At the time of their rescue, the temperature of the water was 65.3 degrees. Once on board, the individuals were administered first aid and were assessed for injuries. They were then transported to the Marion Town Dock, where members from the Marion EMS and Fire Department provided further aid. Two of the three people were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After the three people were safely secured, the Mattapoisett Harbormaster Department also assisted with recovery operations, retrieving belongings lost as a result of the boat capsizing. 'I would like to thank our Harbormaster personnel for their prompt response, quickly rescuing these three individuals and bringing them back to shore, making sure they received proper medical treatment,' said Marion Police Chief Nighelli. 'If not for fast-acting rescue personnel, this situation could have easily turned tragic. Even as we approach the summer season, hypothermia is a very real potential danger whenever someone falls from a craft into coastal waters.' 'These swift, coordinated efforts between the Marion and Mattapoisett Harbormasters, Marion EMS, and Marion Fire Department ensured a safe rescue of all occupants, and no further injuries or navigation hazards have been reported,' said Harbormaster Murphy. Harbormaster Murphy also asks the public to take extra consideration and safety precautions as boating season begins. 'I'd like to use this occasion as a reminder to everyone to always use the proper safety equipment when you go out boating,' Harbormaster Murphy said. 'Always wear a personal flotation device at all times while on the water. Please, stay safe and always be prepared in case of an emergency. If you have any further questions about safety requirements, please call the Marion Harbormaster Department.' The incident remains under investigation. This is a developing story.
