NATIONAL women's squash champion S. Sivasangari advanced to the third round of the British Open 2025 in Birmingham today.
In the second-round match at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the world number eight player needed just 45 minutes to record a 12-10, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory over India's Ahanat Singh.
Awaiting Sivasangari in the third round is the tournament's seventh seed from Japan, Satomi Watanabe, who also advanced after defeating France's Melissa Alves 11-8, 11-5, 11-1.
Earlier, Sivasangari became the sole Malaysian female representative still continuing the challenge in the tournament after Aira Azman and Noor Ainaa Amani Ampandi were eliminated early.
National men's squash champion Ng Eain Yow also suffered a surprising defeat to an unseeded opponent in the second round earlier this morning.

Jun Hao reaches second round, Aaron-Wooi Yik bows out

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao had little trouble checking into the second round of the Indonesian Open after dispatching home favourite Chico Dwi Wardoyo on Wednesday (June 4). In the opening round clash at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Jun Hao produced a composed performance to seal a 21-13, 21-12 win in just 40 minutes. Awaiting him in the second round on Thursday (June 5) was the winner of the first-round tie between Canada's Brian Yang and fourth seed Li Shifeng of China. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei's campaign came to an end after she fell to Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour 20-22, 16-21 in 37 minutes. Malaysia's biggest blow of the day, however, came in the men's doubles when third seeds Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik were shown the exit in a surprise upset. Fresh from winning the Singapore Open last week, Aaron-Wooi Yik were edged out by Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 13-21, 21-19, 18-21. It was sweet revenge for the Danes, who had lost to the Malaysian pair in back-to-back tournaments at the Malaysian Masters and Singapore Open over the past two weeks.

Pearly-Thinaah overcame Taiwan's Shuo-yan-Chien-hui in Indonesian Open first round

PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah lived up to their billing as the fourth seeds after clearing the first hurdle at the Indonesian Open with a straight-game win over Taiwan's Sung Shuo-yan-Yu Chien-hui on Wednesday (June 4). Despite having to adjust to the new look and feel of the Istora Senayan courts, Pearly-Thinaah held their composure to claim a 21-16, 21-17 victory in 42 minutes. They will next face home favourites Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti in the second round on Thursday (June 5). Lanny-Siti had earlier dashed the hopes of another Malaysian pair, Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee, who fought valiantly but eventually lost 21-19, 16-21, 19-21 in front of a raucous home crowd at the iconic venue in Istora Senayan, Jakarta. Meanwhile, the young pair Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting will face a tough test on Thursday (June 5) against Japan's sixth seeds Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi after pulling off a comeback win over Indonesia's Isyana Syahira-Rinjani Nastine 10-21, 21-14, 21-17 in the opening round.

Pearly-Thinaah stay sharp with commanding opening win in Jakarta

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 4 Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah showed no signs of fatigue as they kicked off their fourth consecutive week of competition with a confident first-round victory at the Indonesia Open on Wednesday. Pearly-Thinaah barely broke a sweat against world No. 15 Sung Shuo Yun-Yu Chien Hui of Taiwan, sealing a 21-16, 21-17 win in just 41 minutes at Istora Senayan in Jakarta. The match marked their second win over the Taiwanese pair, having also beaten them in the opening round of the same tournament last year. Despite the result, Thinaah admitted that they weren't fully satisfied with their performance. "To be honest, we're not really happy with today's performance," she said. "It's a new court for us — this year it's a Victor court and the shuttle feels a bit different from what we expected. "But we tried to do what we could, and we also discussed it among ourselves and with the coaches. Tomorrow, we'll be more prepared and aim to do better." Pearly shared that the distinctive blue court surface was something new but not a major issue. "Of course, it's a bit different. It's our first time playing on a blue surface," she said. "But it didn't affect us much — maybe just some of our own mistakes that gave away easy points." The Malaysian pair have been on a grueling run of competitions, beginning with their title-winning campaign at the Thailand Open, followed by a semi-final showing at the Malaysia Masters and a quarter-final finish at last week's Singapore Open. Still, Pearly stressed the importance of mental focus and resilience. "I think everyone is tired, not just us," she said. "But we always remind each other to stay focused, and we just want to keep fighting for every match." They will next face Indonesia's world No. 20 Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti for a place in the quarter-finals. Lanny-Siti denied an all-Malaysian second-round clash when they overcame world No. 23 Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 19-21, 21-16, 21-19. There was also cause for celebration for world No. 47 Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee, who clinched their first-ever win at a prestigious Super 1000 event. The Malaysian pair battled back from a game down to defeat Indonesia's world No. 59 Isyana Syahira Meida-Rinjani Kwinara Nastine 10-21, 21-14, 21-17. In the men's doubles, world No. 32 Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi put up a strong fight against China's world No. 4 Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang but fell just short, losing 23-21, 22-20. Meanwhile, world No. 39 Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian were outplayed by former world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi, going down 21-13, 21-9 in just 29 minutes.
