Over 2000 Canadians take a big step for breakthroughs in cancer research and raise over $1.75 Million in support of The Princess Margaret
Participants of all ages come together to create a world free from the fear of cancer
TORONTO, June 15, 2025 /CNW/ - Participants of all ages raised over $1.75 million at the 12 th annual Journey to Conquer Cancer presented by Starlight Investments, in support of life-saving cancer research at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the world's leading cancer research and treatment centres. This year's event sets a new record for funds raised at the Journey and will help Carry The Fire for cancer patients and their families.
"Each step taken today helps transform outcomes for cancer patients, across Canada, and around the globe," said Dr. Miyo Yamashita, President and CEO, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. "We are grateful to the walkers and runners of all ages, who came together to fuel more breakthroughs at The Princess Margaret and help create a world free from the fear of cancer."
Participants gathered at University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium to hear from cancer survivors, celebrate the collective fundraising impact of the Journey, and enjoy fun festivities before heading out for a one, three, or five km route through downtown Toronto, passing by The Princess Margaret.
"A member of my family was diagnosed with smouldering myeloma, and thanks to The Princess Margaret, and the funds raised at the Journey, they are living in remission," said Julie Stewart-Binks, award-winning sportscaster, proud Princess Margaret supporter, and host of the Journey opening ceremonies. "It was incredible to see thousands come together to support The Princess Margaret."
The Journey to Conquer Cancer presented by Starlight Investments included live entertainment along the route and inspired a moment of reflection as participants passed by Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, where the funds raised at the Journey help create better cancer research, treatment and care for patients everywhere. Fun activities continued after the walk and run back at Varsity Stadium with Journey's mascot "Hope" the dog, a kids run, and outdoor games.
While each participant has their own reason for stepping forward, the entire Journey community advances our philanthropic priorities in early detection, innovative treatments, and comprehensive support which hold the greatest potential to revolutionize cancer survival rates and the experience of this often-devastating disease.

OTTAWA, ON, June 27, 2025 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada is taking action to keep communities safe on both sides of the border. This includes detecting and disrupting the illegal fentanyl trade. Today, the Minister of Health, Marjorie Michel, launched a 45-day public consultation on proposed changes to how Canada regulates precursor chemicals and devices such as pill presses and encapsulators that could be used in the illegal production of drugs. The consultation is open until August 12, 2025. The public consultation will allow impacted stakeholders, such as regulated industries that use precursors for legitimate uses, pharmacies and individual pharmacists, to provide feedback on the proposed changes. These changes would strengthen controls around precursor chemicals and drug equipment to support law and border enforcement as they take action to stop their illegal importation and distribution. Kevin Brosseau Fentanyl Czar Quick Facts Under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), the Precursor Control Regulations (PCR) sets rules for the use of precursor chemicals. While some precursors have legitimate uses, they can also be used in the illegal production of controlled substances, like fentanyl and fentanyl analogues. In Canada, precursors are controlled under Schedule VI of the CDSA and are regulated under the PCR. To ensure that law and border enforcement have the tools they need to detect and address fentanyl and its precursors, the federal government is investing $78.7 million to expand Health Canada's laboratory and regulatory capabilities. Health Canada's Precursor Chemical Risk Management Unit provides better oversight into precursor chemicals and their distribution channels, and enhance monitoring and surveillance of illegal drug trends to enable timely law enforcement action. Health Canada is establishing a new Canadian Drug Analysis Centre that will allow for more specialized analysis of synthetic drug samples. The analysis will help determine how and where these substances were manufactured to support law enforcement and public safety partners to strategically target organized crime. Airmedic Honours the Memory of Its Team and Patient Lost During a Medical Evacuation Operation Français
SAINT-HUBERT, QC, June 27, 2025 /CNW/ - Today, the Coroner's Office released the identities of the three crew members and the patient who perished in the crash of the helicopter transporting them during a medical evacuation operation. The helicopter went down Friday evening, just minutes after taking off from the shores of Lake Watshishou, located north of Natashquan. The Airmedic team was en route to assist a patient. The evacuation took place in a geographically complex, remote, and heavily forested area. Following the official identification by the coroner, Airmedic confirms that the members of the crew were: Olivier Blouin, dedicated paramedic [25 years old]: Olivier joined Airmedic in July 2024, having also worked with Dessercom since 2018. Known for his professionalism, enthusiasm, and constant desire to learn, he brought his expertise to patients both in the air and on the ground. He thrived on action and was deeply committed to the mission of helping others. He practiced his profession with heart. Passionate about emergency prehospital care, a promising career lay ahead of him. Sébastien De Lutio, experienced pilot [50 years old]: Sébastien had over 30 years of experience, including 29 years in the Canadian Armed Forces and 2 years with Airmedic. He climbed the ranks with determination, notably serving with the 430 Tactical Helicopter Squadron in Valcartier, where he was promoted to captain in 2000. He took part in several major operations, bringing his expertise to challenging missions.
