F1 hopes extra pit stops bring more excitement in the glamorous but dull Monaco Grand Prix

Yahoo23-05-2025

The Monaco Grand Prix may be 'the jewel in Formula 1's crown' but the race itself is rarely must-see TV. Sometimes, it's downright dull.
F1 and its governing body, the FIA, hope a rule change for Sunday's race will change that. Drivers will be forced to change tires at least twice in the hope that more pit stop strategy could shake up an event where Saturday qualifying — and the resulting grid position — is often more important than race day.
'I guess it can go both ways," champion Max Verstappen said Thursday. "It can be quite straightforward, or it can go completely crazy because of safety cars coming into play or not making the right calls. I think it will spice it up probably a bit more.'
The change is designed to stop a repeat of last year, when a first-lap crash brought out the red flag, allowing everyone to make their one mandatory tire change.
With overtaking all but impossible on the twisty Monaco streets, the rest of the race was a procession. Home driver Charles Leclerc took the win for Ferrari and all of the top 10 finished in grid order.
How Sunday's race shakes out could depend on whether teams get creative with their strategies.
'Normally, with one stop, once you have a good pit stop and everything is fine, then you drive to the end and just stay focused and not hit the barrier," Verstappen said. "But maybe with a two-stop it can create something different, people gambling, guessing when the right time is to box.'
McLaren's Monaco pedigree
Monaco was once McLaren territory. It could be again.
It's the most successful team with 15 wins in Monaco, but none since Lewis Hamilton took the victory in 2008 on his way to his first championship.
Verstappen's win at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix last week tightened up a title race which was increasingly dominated by McLaren.
Oscar Piastri leads the standings, but now only by 13 points ahead of his teammate Lando Norris and 22 from Verstappen.
Monaco could favor McLaren because its car tends to be easier on its tires and, as Verstappen said last week, because his Red Bull dislikes low-speed corners.
Verstappen skips movie night
Ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, all but two of the 20 F1 drivers were pictured at a private screening Wednesday of the upcoming movie 'F1,' starring Brad Pitt and produced by Lewis Hamilton.
Not Verstappen, though, who became a father for the first time a few weeks ago.
'I wanted to spend more private time,' said Verstappen. 'There was the opportunity to watch it, but if I watch it now or in three or four weeks, that's fine as well.'

Cadillac F1 Team Secures Tommy Hilfiger Sponsorship for 2026 Bid

The latest car news, reviews, and features. After nearly a decade of continuously sponsoring Mercedes-AMG Petronas, fashion juggernaut Tommy Hilfiger has confirmed that it will back Cadillac's Formula 1 effort in 2026 (and beyond) as the team's official apparel partner and lifestyle sponsor. It's a bit of a coup for Cadillac, whose admittance to the series was staunchly opposed by Mercedes F1 owner and boss Toto Wolff. No specifics of the deal were made public in Hilfiger's announcement, but we were teased with the broader strokes of their multi-year arrangement. Not only will the Hilfiger brand adorn Cadillac's race cars, but it will also provide official 'fanwear collections' (swag), 'immersive events and activations' (influencer parties) and 'disruptive campaigns with the team and drivers' (nobody actually knows). 'Two icons. One vision. A bold new era of American motorsport,' Hilfiger said in an official announcement. 'We're proud to continue our Formula 1 story alongside TWG Motorsports and Cadillac. We share a vision to honor the heritage of F1 while pushing it forward — celebrating where we come from, and reimagining where we can go. As the sport's presence around the globe continues to soar, there's never been a better time to dream big, and show the world what an American team can bring to the grid.' Hilfiger's F1 ties date to the early '90s. The brand first partnered with Lotus, and then later with Ferrari. Hilfiger took a 17-year hiatus from the series after the 2001 season and sponsored Mercedes continuously from its return in 2018 through the end of last season, when Mercedes and Adidas announced their new partnership for 2025. In a roundabout way, this partnership will temporarily reunite Hilfiger with Ferrari. The latter will provide the engines for Cadillac's early effort, buying time for General Motors to spin up its own development program, which it wants to have in place by 2030. Got a tip? Can a football player outrun an F1 car on a football pitch?

If only Daniel James had been fit. When Leeds United's players challenged a Formula One team to a drag race at Elland Road, it was with the Wales international in mind. James was one of four Leeds players, alongside Georginio Rutter, Glen Kamara and Ethan Ampadu, to visit Red Bull, one of the club's principal sponsors and shareholders, at last summer's British Grand Prix. There, they pitched the idea. Advertisement Almost 12 months later, the results have been published. Red Bull sent its 2011 F1 car, the RB7, to the club's Elland Road stadium for a drag race up and down the pitch, but James was nowhere to be seen. The jet-heeled winger laboured through the final month of the season with a hamstring injury and was not ready to turn and burn with the motor. Rutter and Kamara had also left Leeds well before the experiment took place. Instead, Isaac Schmidt, Wilfried Gnonto and Largie Ramazani, no slouches themselves, stepped up. That trio helped Leeds win promotion from the Championship — England's second-tier — to the Premier League last season. They might have won the race for a place in the top flight by coming first and taking the Championship trophy, but in this one, they ended up taking second. The car, driven by 17-year-old Arvid Lindblad, a Formula Two prospect, did, unsurprisingly, come out on top, but it may have been closer than you were expecting. The race went between the two penalty boxes, with the grass and a 180-degree turn seen as the ideal obstacles to slow the car down. There were about 30 yards in it by the end, but the biggest surprise was seeing Schmidt beat the two wingers in the footrace. ⚡️🚀 Ramazani, Gnonto & Schmidt take on the RB7 on the Elland Road pitch! The race is ON! — Leeds United (C) (@LUFC) June 4, 2025 'This was a great experience,' said Ramazani. 'The only thing better would be getting in the car. 'I love F1. I went to the Monaco Grand Prix last week, which was a bucket list moment for me. I used to play F1 games on the console when I was younger, so it was surreal to be next to a real car and race against it.' The Belgian also said what we were all thinking as we watched the footage: 'Before the race, I was scared, but I was confident too. We did great, but in the end, the car was just too quick. Advertisement 'One of the players involved in this idea was Dan James. Unfortunately, he's been injured, but I'd back my teammate over that car any day. DJ would smoke this car.' Lindblad said: 'Ahead of the race, I was a bit nervous. I'd never driven on grass and had no idea how it would go. 'The car has a ton of horsepower and there is not much grip on grass, so I wasn't sure if I could go full throttle and turn the car properly. It was great fun to challenge my skills and compete against other sportspeople. 'I admire what Leeds have done this year and wish them well for next season too.'

Provisional pole for Lando Norris

Catch up on the Formula 1 action as Oscar Piastri got the better of Lando Norris in Barcelona qualifying Getty Images McLaren's Oscar Piastri has qualified on pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix. The Australian, who leads the F1 World Driver's Championship standings, beat his team-mate Lando Norris as McLaren secured a one-two for tomorrow's race. Max Verstappen qualified third, ahead of British duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton. He sets a blistering pace through the second sector, losing a smidge of time in the third but still manages to beat Oscar Piastri by a measly 0.017! Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, moves into fourth, ahead of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Getty Images Wow! A 1:11.836 to go top! George Russell moves into second with a superb 1:12.075, ahead of Max Verstappen in third. Despite the dark clouds growing near the circuit, the team radars aren't showing anything due to hit the track itself through Q3. I think we'll get to the end without showers. Can anybody stop McLaren here?! Getty Images I think Alex Albon and Williams will be pretty happy with 11th there. Albon gave his car up for Williams young driver Victor Martins in FP1, and then was sidelined by a suspected brake issue through much of Q3, meaning he had just one flying lap completed on Saturday heading into qualifying. At a track that really does not suit Williams, to be so close to reaching Q3 is a decent return. 11. Alex Albon , Williams , Williams 12. Gabriel Bortoleto , Sauber , Sauber 13. Yuki Tsunoda, Red Bull And as Yuki Tsunoda slumps to last, Isack Hadjar puts in another great qualifying display for Racing Bulls to reach Q3, off the heels of finishing sixth in Monaco last weekend. He's putting in a good case for future consideration for that second Red Bull seat, surely... Getty Images The young Racing Bulls driver looked to be in trouble but produced a fine lap to go sixth. Ollie Bearman is the last man out on the track … but fails to significantly improve his time and stays in P15. Alex Albon, Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson and Lance Stroll join him in exiting Q2. His last flying lap is only good enough for 8th. Lance Stroll is out. He's currently sat in 13th. The top five are all in the pits. Just about everybody else is on an out lap. Getty Images The drivers in the danger zone are: Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson, Alex Albon, Lance Stroll and Oliver Bearman. Oscar Piastri still on top at this stage, but Lando Norris again had to pass a slower car at Turn 12, which will have contributed to the 0.058 second gap to the other McLaren. They are so close right now, with Piastri edging it in the first sector, Norris mighty in sector two. Max Verstappen actually has the quickest time in sector three, with a big 0.36 second gap to the leaders. Getty Images Lando Norris goes quickest with a 1:12.056. But Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri are both on flying laps and both go quicker through the first sector… Hamilton, however, loses time in the third and final sector and goes third, behind Norris and Max Verstappen. Piastri then nudges them all down a spot with a blistering 1:11.998. Max Verstappen has set the quickest lap so far in Q2: a 1:12.358. He's followed by Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson and Alex Albon. Getty Images Looks like a big 0.2 second gap between the McLaren drivers in Q1, but Lando Norris had a big moment three corners from home when he passed a slower car and had to step off the gas to save a big snap. There's surely more time to come from him heading into Q2. Fernando Alonso is the first out onto the track. Getty Images Oscar Piastri, once again, was the fastest man of the session. He was followed by Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. Getty Images 16. Nico Hulkenberg , Sauber , Sauber 17. Esteban Ocon , Haas , Haas 18. Carlos Sainz , Williams , Williams 19. Franco Colapinto , Alpine , Alpine 20. Yuki Tsunoda, Red Bull Oh dear, that's not a good result for Yuki Tsunoda. The second Red Bull 'curse' shows zero sign of abating right now. He's plum last in qualifying, even if he is 'only' six-tenths of a second off Verstappen's lap time up in P2.
