Dermat shares 'skin cycling' may be the secret to unlock glowing skin for Indians, suggests beginner-friendly routine

Hindustan Times18 hours ago

Skincare is slowly reaching a saturation point with the excessive layering and the increasing steps in your routine. Even your skin has hit the threshold of tolerance. This results in unexpected breakouts and irritated skin, leaving many confused, despite doing everything 'right.' But the key to healthy skin is simplicity. The skincare landscape in India now is seeing a growing consciousness towards skin cycling, which is rooted in the philosophy of minimalism and the idea of recovery.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Prashant Agrawal, Sr. Dermatologist, Formulator and Hair Transplant Surgeon, explained how skin cycling helps in the much-needed skin recovery, reducing flare-ups.
He said,"Indians are gradually moving away from complicated, multi-step routines toward a more mindful approach. One of the most noteworthy trends leading this shift is skin cycling. As a practising dermatologist, I've witnessed a sharp rise in issues related to over-exfoliation, barrier disruption, and ingredient overload. Overdoing actives like daily acids, retinoids, and heavy layering is leaving many with reactive skin with frequent flare-ups. These aren't signs of 'bad skin' or 'bad products,' but rather signs of overuse and lack of recovery time. As a result, skinimalism, using fewer, smarter products, is gaining traction, with skin cycling leading the charge. The shift includes using only what skin needs, protecting the barrier, and understanding actives wisely."
Dr Prashant Agrawal shared a detailed guide on skin cycling, why Indians need it more right now, bursting common myths and an easy beginner-friendly routine:
Skin cycling is a methodical skincare approach that alternates active ingredient use with rest days to support the skin's natural repair processes. A typical 4-day cycle includes:
This structured rotation helps the skin reap the benefits of active ingredients without triggering irritation, inflammation, or sensitivity that can come from daily use.

With time and consistent care, actives like antioxidants, peptides, or stronger exfoliants can be introduced based on specific skin goals.
Truth: It's a proactive approach suitable for anyone looking to build a sustainable, effective skincare routine.
Truth: Many people notice improvements in skin texture, reduced breakouts, and enhanced radiance within just 2–3 weeks.
Truth: You don't have to eliminate them, just time them wisely. For instance, vitamin C in the morning can coexist with skin cycling at night, as long as it's not combined with strong nighttime actives.

In Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, educated middle-class put off childbirth

NEW DELHI: Even as India's fertility rate is declining, many people in India, especially women, still face significant barriers to making free and informed decisions about their reproductive lives, says the UN Population Fund's State of World Population Report released Tuesday. These barriers create what the report identified as India's "high fertility and low fertility duality". The fertility rate has come down from nearly five children per woman in 1970 to about two, courtesy improved education and access to reproductive healthcare. The TFR fell below the replacement level rate to 2.0 for the first time in the National Family Health Survey (2019-21). States such as Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh continue to experience high fertility rates. Here, unintended and closely spaced births are common due to poor contraceptive and health services, and gender norms, it said. On the other hand, states such as Delhi, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have sustained below-replacement fertility with many couples delaying or skipping childbirth due to costs and work-life conflict, especially among educated middle-class women. The report called for a shift from panic over falling fertility to addressing unmet reproductive goals as it highlighted that millions of individuals are not able to realise their real fertility goals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3/4 BHK from ₹ 1.68 Crore*, Bengaluru Birla Estates Learn More Undo "This is the real crisis, not underpopulation or overpopulation. The answer lies in greater reproductive agency - a person's ability to make free and informed choices about sex, contraception and starting a family," it said. In line with these trends, a UNFPA-YouGov survey of 14,000 respondents across14 countries, including India, challenged global narratives around "population explosion vs population collapse" as it showed that one in three adult Indians (36%) face unintended pregnancies while 30% experience unfulfilled desire of having either more or fewer children. Notably, 23% faced both. Financial limitation is one of the biggest barriers to reproductive freedom with nearly four in 10 people citing it as a reason stopping them from having the families they want. Job insecurity (21%), housing constraints (22%), and lack of reliable childcare (18%) are making parenthood feel out of reach.

Cataract surgery can't be done during monsoon? Top surgeon debunks 5 myths, shares facts

Cataract is a common eye condition that typically affects older adults, causing cloudy or blurred vision. It occurs when proteins in the eye's lens break down and clump together, preventing light from passing through clearly to the retina. Also read | What are cataracts and how they can be treated However, myths associated with cataract surgery often stop patients from seeking timely help. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Supriya Sriganesh, ophthalmologist, cataract and refractive surgeon, Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore busted several myths. Fact: This is absolutely untrue. In fact, allowing the cataract to mature can be very dangerous. The ideal stage to get operated is in the early stages, such as stage 2. If you allow the cataract to progress to the point where your vision is severely impaired, it makes the surgery much more complicated. A mature cataract carries an increased risk of instability, retinal complications, and glaucoma after surgery. Therefore, never wait for the cataract to mature. The right time to undergo cataract surgery is when the drop in vision begins to affect your day-to-day activities. If your vision is blurry and it's interfering with your routine, it's time to get the surgery done. You don't need to wait for it to worsen. Fact: This is a very old belief from the time when cataract surgery was a major, manual procedure involving large incisions and a long recovery period. Modern cataract surgery is a quick, painless, and bloodless procedure, often performed using laser technology. Recovery is rapid, and there are no seasonal restrictions. You can safely undergo cataract surgery during the monsoon, summer, winter or any time of the year. Fact: Some patients ask whether it's necessary to put a lens in the eye after cataract removal. It is absolutely essential. The eye functions like a camera, and the lens is what focuses light onto the retina, much like a camera lens focuses light onto film or a sensor. Without a lens in the eye, the light entering cannot be focused, resulting in blurred vision. Implanting an intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract removal is mandatory for clear vision. Fact: Cataract refers to the clouding of the eye's natural lens. During surgery, the lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one, which is placed inside the original lens capsule (a natural bag within the eye). Some people experience blurred vision a few years after surgery due to a condition called posterior capsular opacification (PCO), where some cells grow on the back of the lens capsule. This is not the cataract returning. It is easily treated with a simple, one-time laser polishing procedure that restores clear vision. Also read | Cataract to glaucoma: Doctor shares 5 common eye conditions that affect women after the age of 40 Fact: Another myth is that the lens implanted during cataract surgery can be replaced later. In reality, the artificial lens is a permanent implant. Once it is placed inside the eye, it is not routinely removed or exchanged. Only in rare cases, such as lens displacement or complications, might the lens need to be removed or replaced and even then, it carries certain risks. Therefore, choosing the right lens is a crucial decision. It is based on the patient's lifestyle and visual needs, whether they prefer near vision, distance vision, or do not mind wearing glasses. These considerations are discussed with the patient beforehand to ensure the most suitable and permanent choice is made.
