Qatari PM gives first interview to Israeli news channel

Middle East Eye26-01-2025

Qatar's Prime Minister, who also serves as Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, has given an interview to Israel's Channel 12 broadcaster in the first such sit-down of its kind.
He confirmed that US President Donald Trump's Mideast envoy helped pressure the Israelis to get the ceasefire deal in Gaza over the finish line, and as he has done previously, expressed disappointment that it took more than a year to seal the agreement when the draft was drawn up in December 2023 and has changed little, if at all, since.
Thani described the negotiation process as often difficult and frustrating.
He added that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve peace in the region, and that whether in Gaza or the West Bank, only Palestinians should be managing their own affairs.

UN special rapporteur denounces aid delivery as cover for violence in Gaza

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, criticised the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation's aid delivery system, calling the use of 'aid distribution' a form of 'humanitarian camouflage'. She described it as 'an essential tactic of this genocide' in a post on X. 'History will prove right those who had sounded the alarm, and it will be of no consolation: the damage is done,' Albanese wrote, placing blame on what she called the 'moral and political corruption of the world we live in'. The statement comes amid repeated reports of deadly Israeli gunfire near aid distribution points in Gaza, where hundreds of Palestinians have been killed while attempting to access humanitarian assistance.

Israel orders military to stop aid boat with Greta Thunberg reaching Gaza

Israel has ordered the military to block an aid boat headed for Gaza with 12 activists on board, including Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg. "I have instructed the military to prevent the Madleen flotilla from reaching Gaza," Israel Katz said in a statement from his office. "To Greta the antisemite and her companions, Hamas propaganda mouthpieces, I say clearly: turn back because you will not reach Gaza." Thunberg and 11 other activists set off from Sicily on 1 June, carrying urgent supplies for besieged and starving Palestinians. The aid includes baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, women's sanitary products, water desalination kits, medical supplies, crutches, and children's prosthetics. Russia pushes into Ukraine's Dnipropetrovsk region

Ukrainian response and military engagement Ukraine's southern army command acknowledged Russia's intentions to enter the Dnipropetrovsk region but emphasized that Ukrainian forces are "bravely and professionally holding their section of the frontline." The region, which includes the city of Dnipro, is a crucial industrial and logistical hub for Ukraine. Russian advances could disrupt vital supply lines and impact Ukraine's military operations. Civilian impact and infrastructure damage Recent Russian airstrikes have targeted civilian areas in Dnipropetrovsk, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage. In Mezhivska, a person was killed in an overnight bomb attack, and in Pavlograd, two individuals were injured in a mass attack. These attacks contribute to the escalating humanitarian crisis in the region. Prisoner exchange agreement faces challenges A planned prisoner exchange, agreed upon during recent negotiations in Istanbul, is facing delays. Russia claims that Ukraine is refusing to agree to take back the bodies of killed soldiers, while Ukraine asserts that preparations for the exchange are proceeding as planned. Both sides have accused each other of attempting to thwart and delay the swap. International reactions and Diplomatic tensions The United States has expressed concern over the intensification of hostilities, with President Donald Trump commenting on the complexity of the conflict and hinting that it may have to continue unresolved for now. Meanwhile, Russia continues to press its territorial claims, demanding formal recognition of regions it has annexed, which Ukraine has repeatedly ruled out. Ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, millions of displaced persons, and widespread destruction across eastern Ukraine. As Russian forces push deeper into Dnipropetrovsk, the situation remains dire, with ongoing military engagements and a deteriorating humanitarian situation.
