Samsung Galaxy A17 to borrow a camera feature from its higher-end siblings

GSM Arena2 days ago

Samsung launched the Galaxy A16 back in October, and it's now working on its successor, the Galaxy A17. While we're most likely still a few months away from this model's introduction, a new rumor out of Korea today has some good news for those looking forward to its release.
Apparently, the Galaxy A17's main camera will have optical image stabilization (OIS). Once a feature exclusive to flagships, this has trickled down Samsung's Galaxy A series of mid-rangers in the past few years, and now it seems like it's ready to make it to one of its entry-level devices as well. To keep costs down, Samsung is considering using an OIS system that uses springs, which is allegedly 20% cheaper compared to existing OIS implementations. Samsung Galaxy A16
So far, OIS has made it as low as the Galaxy A2x series with the A26 most recently featuring the tech. Obviously, Samsung wants to use the addition of OIS to the Galaxy A17 as a key differentiator compared to its competitors, and thus increase sales. Whether that works remains to be seen, but we are glad to see such features that used to be flagship-only not so many years ago making their way to even low-end handsets like this one. Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 will prove Google and Samsung's relationship was past its peak

Cracks have started to appear in Google and Samsung's relationship and we all might be better off for and Samsung aren't exactly quarreling with each other. Heck, they aren't even going to call it quits. Reports indicate that their friendship is cooling off and they are exploring other partnerships. This will be reflected in their next flagships, the Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26. I believe that the two have decided to drift apart at the right time. Google collaborated closely with Samsung to develop its first in-house chipset, the Tensor G1, which debuted on the Pixel 6 in 2021. The South Korean giant didn't only manufacture the chip but also helped Google design the Tensor G1. Without Samsung's help, Google may not have been able to move away from it was Google who made sure that Samsung wasn't left behind in the age of AI by working with the company on Galaxy AI. Without a surefooted partner, Samsung may have disappointed customers like Apple. Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S25. | Image Credit - PhoneArena While switching to a home-brewed chipset gave Google greater control of its phones, Tensor chips have often been criticized for not being as fast and power-efficient as Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips that fuel most top Android this can partly be attributed to Google's inexpertise, especially in the early days of Tensor, it can also be chalked down to the Exynos blueprint and Samsung's foundry. This is apparently why the upcoming Pixel 10 will feature a chip produced by TSMC, which is known for making chips with better power-to-performance ratios. As for Samsung, it has reportedly inked a deal with AI company Perplexity to equip the Galaxy S26 with its app, assistance, and search features. While Samsung isn't ready to give up on Google's AI models yet, the partnerships with Perplexity will help it reduce its reliance on Google. Leaked Pixel 10 prototype. | Image credit-Mystic Leaks I am not saying the Galaxy S25 and Pixel 9 are similar. But I do think that they are not different enough any longer to have a solid distinct identity. Yes, the phones couldn't be further apart in terms of their hardware and design, and the user interface is also a world apart. However, the phones offer similar AI experiences, largely because Samsung is at the mercy of Google for its AI features. That's not to say that there aren't AI experiences that are exclusive to the two companies, but broadly speaking, they are quite the same. And in an era where AI matters more than anything else, this is not something to be taken lightly. The Pixel 9 is an excellent phone but it's held back by its Samsung-made chip. It's fast enough for most people and the latest Tensor chip runs cooler, but power users are still not willing to tolerate its shortcomings. A Galaxy S26 with all-new AI capabilities will make it exciting in a sea of phones that offer pretty much the same AI tools. Similarly, a Pixel 10 that's about as performant as a new Samsung Galaxy phone or Apple iPhone will make more people gravitate to Google. Breakups are hard but often necessary and Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 will show us why.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE leaked prices spell good news for fans

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 | Image credit: PhoneArena The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is a completely new entry in the Galaxy Z series. In an attempt to offer its fans a more affordable price point, Samsung has decided to introduce a cheaper foldable that uses the technology launched one or two years ago (for the most part). This is why we're now talking about Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, a device that's supposed to be specially designed for fans, hence the 'Fan Edition' name tag. But Samsung's Fan Edition phones have never been more about price rather than specs, so the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE's market price might be the only thing that makes it more or less appealing to the masses. Well, we now have the first details about the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE's price, albeit just for one market. South Korean media reports that that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will cost about KRW 1 million. The problem is Samsung's devices aren't priced similarly in all regions. In fact, South Korea is probably the cheapest place to buy a Samsung foldable smartphone, which makes sense considering it's the company's home means that even if we convert the Korean currency to USD and EUR (or any other currency), it will still be misleading. But just for the sake of information, KRW 1 million equates to $735, €645 or £545. Since South Korea typically gets the cheapest Samsung foldables (at least at launch), we expect the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE to cost more than the amounts mentioned above. However, anything above $800/€800 would probably make the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE nearly an impossible sell especially considering that it doesn't bring anything new to the table. In fact, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is rumored to be just a reskinned Galaxy Z Flip 5/6, featuring a couple of improvements. The biggest one is the Exynos 2400e chipset, which is said to replace the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2/3 that power the Galaxy Z Flip 5 /6 models. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 | Image credit: PhoneArena The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will be available in two storage sizes: 128GB and 256GB. The report also mentions that the 'vanilla' Galaxy Z Flip 7 will come in 256GB and 512GB options, and that its cost will be the same as the Galaxy Z Flip will probably stop selling the Galaxy Z Flip 6 in the United States soon, but until that happens, the phone is available for around $1,100. If the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE will be priced at $800, it will make a much better deal. It will probably depend on how hard US carriers decide to push Samsung's new affordable foldable to customers, especially since there's enough competition in this specific segment after Motorola recently introduced its new Razr 2025 lineup.
