Srinagar's Jamia Masjid locked on Eid, Mirwaiz detained
SRINAGAR: Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid was locked and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq placed under house arrest Saturday on Eid-ul-Adha, denying devotees the opportunity to offer prayers and provoking a backlash from many, including CM Omar Abdullah. Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar, which looks after the mosque management, said the gates were closed early Saturday morning and police deployed outside. Mirwaiz and Hurriyat Conference chairman Umar Farooq's family has traditionally led prayers at the mosque for generations. 'It is deeply regrettable that once again, people were not allowed to offer Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid,' Omar said. He expressed helplessness, saying law and order in J&K Union territory fell under the purview of lieutenant governor (LG) Manoj Sinha's administration. 'I have no idea on what grounds such decisions are made,' the CM said. Omar urged the authorities to trust J&K's residents, saying 'these are the same people who, after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, came forward and unequivocally condemned it'. The CM called on 'the govt' to reconsider such actions in the future, alluding probably to the administration of the Centre-appointed LG. I, too, have been detained at my home. In a Muslim-majority region, Muslims are deprived of their fundamental right to pray even on their most important religious occasion celebrated across the world! What a shame on those who rule over us, and on those elected by the people who choose to remain silent as our rights are trampled over, again and again,' the Mirwaiz posted on X. J&K police and home department had not issued any statement on locking of the mosque and Mirwaiz's detention. PDP president and former CM Mehbooba Mufti joined the condemnation, accusing the Omar-led govt of being 'mere spectators'. 'J&K is the only Muslim-majority region in the country, and yet it is here that a major mosque is shut down on Eid, denying people their right to offer prayers. If govt claims everything is normal in J&K, why is the Mirwaiz not allowed to offer prayers,' Mehbooba said. Asked about the restrictions, BJP functionary and J&K Waqf Board chairperson Darkshan Andrabi declined comment. 'Jamia Masjid doesn't come under Waqf Board,' she said.

UBT flays Sena over Durgadi temple visit curbs on Eid
Kalyan: Members from both Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and UBT factions held separate protests near Durgadi fort in Kalyan on Saturday. The fort houses religious sites for both Hindus and Muslims. During Bakr Eid, Muslim worshippers gather in large numbers to pray at the fort's Idgah section. Consequently, Hindu devotees are restricted from entering the Durga temple located at the fort's front to maintain peace. On Saturday, police prevented both Sena factions from crossing the barricades near the fort. The Sena UBT's up neta Vijay Salvi criticised Shiv Sena, noting that while the Ghanta Naad movement was initiated by Anand Dighe in 1982, with deputy CM Eknath Shinde leading it for many years, the state administration has now been restricting devotee entry despite his positions as CM and deputy CM showing duplicity on Hindutva." Sena MLA Vishwanath Bhoir also criticised the administration for the restrictions on temple entry. — Pradeep Gupta

Lakshman may face Cong action for outburst against RaGa, Vadra
Bhopal: The AICC disciplinary action committee (DAC) has recommended expelling senior leader Lakshman Singh, former MLA, five-time MP, and younger brother of Digvijaya Singh , from the party for six years over "repeated public statements against the leadership" that damaged the party's image. On Saturday, sources in the Congress state unit said the party could expel him from primary membership after his comment on Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi and AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra. Lakshman Singh was served with a show-cause notice after he asked how long will the Congress have to put up with the immaturity of Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra? On April 24, while paying homage to victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack at a function, Lakshman Singh said: "Rahul Gandhi and Robert Vadra are immature. The country is suffering the consequences of their immaturity." He also said, "Robert Vadra is Rahulji's brother-in-law. He said the attack is because Muslims are not permitted to offer Namaz on the roads. Till when are we going to tolerate such childishness? Rahul Gandhi should think before he speaks, he is the LOP." Lakshman Singh had also launched a scatching attack on Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah. "I am saying this on camera that the CM of Jammu and Kashmir is in collusion with terrorists. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo I urge Rahul Gandhi and AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to withdraw support from him," Lakshman Singh said. A senior state Congress office-bearer said the DAC has recommended expulsion of Lakshman Singh for indiscipline. The final decision will be taken soon by AICC president Kharge, the office-bearer said.
