Couple busted with £1m of drugs in luggage at airport in drug mule fears
Daniel McDonald and Sian Warren were arrested at Heathrow Airport.
A couple detained as they tried to bring drugs worth £1million into the UK have been charged with smuggling. Daniel McDonald and Sian Warren were snared at Heathrow Airport.
McDonald, 36, and Warren, 34, are accused of trying to smuggle cannabis worth the seven-figure sum after coming back from the Asian holiday hotspot of Thailand.
The National Crime Agency reportedly found more than 51kg of cannabis in their luggage. It is understood that the drug was in four cases that the pair were carrying.
They appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court where they have been charged with importing Class B drugs and have been bailed under curfew ahead of a plea hearing on June 26 at Isleworth Crown Court.
Warren and McDonald, from Salford, Greater Manchester, went to Bangkok on holiday last month and Warren's dad Tony told The Sun that there must have been a mistake.
The Mirror reports He said: "Sian's not brought anything back, definitely not. She had her own suitcase with clothes in it." It is the latest of several incidents involving British holidaymakers who have been accused of smuggling drugs from Thailand.

An expert has now warned that criminal gangs are 'grooming' naive tourists. In the last few weeks, three British women have hit the headlines after they were accused of attempting to smuggle drugs.
Bella May Cullen, 18, was arrested after flying into Georgia from Thailand with around 14kg of cannabis and 2kg of hashish in her luggage. A day later former TUI stewardess Charlotte May Lee was allegedly caught with 46kg of Kush.
She is said to have had the high-grade strain of cannabis, valued at £1.2million, in her luggage after arriving in Sri Lanka, again from Thailand. And then it emerged another Brit, Isabella Daggett, 21, from Leeds, has been held in a hellhole Dubai prison since March.
She was arrested on suspected drugs offences. Nathan Paul Southern is the Operations Director at The EyeWitness Project, which specialises in the investigation of organised crime, conflict and corruption.
He says southeast Asia has now become the world's leading supplier of both narcotics like heroin and synthetic drugs like ecstasy and crystal meth.
The 'Golden Triangle' - a large mountainous region on the borders with Myanmar, Thailand and Laos, recently overtook Afghanistan as the world's largest producer of opium, used to make heroin.
And he says gangs are 'flocking' to the region from around the world, where they appear to be using grooming techniques used in other types of crimes to ensnare impressionable young Westerners.
Mr Southern said: "The idea of charming strangers grooming backpackers isn't new, it's just the same old tactics in a region with a booming drug trade."
He told the Mirror: "The same grooming techniques we've seen in romance scams and human trafficking could be getting adapted for drug smuggling."

April Jones' family join calls for a new criminal offence
The Prime Minister has been invited to meet with the family of murdered Machynlleth girl April Jones to discuss the creation of a new criminal offence for desecrating a body. April was only five years old when she went missing on the evening of October 1, 2012, after playing on her bike with friends near her home on the Bryn-y-Gog estate. Her disappearance shocked the nation and became the biggest search in British police history with specialist teams scouring around 40 square miles over six months. Paedophile and former slaughterman Mark Bridger, 47, was given a whole life sentence for April's abduction and murder, as well as being convicted for perverting the course of justice of disposing, concealing or destroying the girl's body. There had been strong evidence of a burnt human skull found in the fireplace of Bridger's cottage in Ceinws, which was a 10-minute drive from April's home. Mark Bridger was convicted of April's abduction and murder. The families of people who have been murdered, including Michael O'Leary and Sarah Everard, have called on the Prime Minister to create a new criminal offence of desecrating a body. At Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday (June 11), Sir Keir Starmer was asked to meet with the families of people who have been murdered and hear their plea to make it a crime to desecrate a body. Plaid Cymru MP Ann Davies, who represents Caerfyrddin, said: 'My constituent Mr Michael O'Leary was brutally murdered five years ago, and his body was desecrated. 'I've made a number of requests to discuss his and other victims' cases with ministers and to explore introducing legislation making the desecration of a body a criminal offence. 'Would the Prime Minister meet with Mr O'Leary's family, along with other victims' families, including April Jones of Machynlleth, Sarah Everard and Helen McCourt, to hear why they are calling for a new criminal offence of desecrating a body to be introduced?' Responding, Sir Keir said: 'Can I thank her for raising this horrific case and the other similar cases and my thoughts, and I'm sure the thoughts of the whole House, are with Michael's family and all those affected by such vile crimes. 'I think we all need to listen to what they have to say… 'I'm sure the justice minister will be in touch at the first opportunity to take this forward.' Mr O'Leary, a 55-year-old father of three, was shot dead by his friend Andrew Jones in 2020, after Jones found out the victim was having an affair with his wife. He then burned Mr O'Leary's body on a funeral pyre made of wood pallets, and tried to make it look like he killed himself. Sarah Everard, 33, was kidnapped and murdered by off-duty police officer Wayne Couzens in 2021, who then burned her body in the woods. Helen McCourt was 22 years old when she was killed while walking home in Merseyside, and her murderer never revealed the location of her body. Her mother, Marie McCourt, has campaigned for Helen's Law, which would make it a criminal offence to conceal a body, and Helen's Law 2, which would make a new offence of desecrating a body.

Major Hollyoaks exit confirmed as huge star quits after 9 years
Rory Douglas-Speed is set to leave after nine years as Joel Dexter (Picture: Lime Pictures) Rory Douglas-Speed has quit Hollyoaks after nine years. The popular star, who plays Joel Dexter, has wrapped filming, with his final scenes believed to have already hit screens. Joel, as viewers know, was last seen in a prison cell following his arrest for the murder of Tommy Odenkirk (Brandon Fellows). The former priest discovered that Tommy, who masqueraded as a therapist, was responsible for leaking a video of Leela Dexter's (Kirsty-Leigh Porter) rape ordeal online. What's more, he manipulated Joel into thinking that he'd murdered his brother Billy, which he then used as leverage to try and build a relationship with him. Joel found out that truth and, being spurred on by Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield) – who Tommy also had leverage over – he decided to take action. An altercation ensued and the following morning Joel woke to find Tommy dead on the floor beside him. Joel was jailed after he confessed to murdering Tommy (Picture: Lime Pictures) At first, he contemplated covering his tracks but ultimately he decided it was for the best to report himself to the police. Joel was subsequently seen in a police cell speaking with DI Banks (Drew Cain) following his arrest. According to The Sun, this showdown will serve as Rory's final scene as Joel, bringing to an end a nine year stint on the show. 'It was a tough decision for him to make to leave, but it's right for the character and for Rory himself,' a source told the publication. 'He's loved the last nine years and all that has come with Hollyoaks, but he really wants to spread his wings. Follow Metro Soaps on WhatsApp and get all the latest spoilers first! Bosses were very kind and the door has been left open for Joel to return one day so it's not goodbye by any means.' Rory has been one of Hollyoaks' biggest stars of the past decade, taking over the role of Joel from previous star Andrew Still, who went on to play Daisy's stalker Justin in Coronation Street. With Rory in the role, Joel featured in numerous long-running stories, which allowed for the star to deliver powerhouse performances aplenty. This past year in particular has been one of his strongest to date, with Joel's characterisation arguably at an all-time high since the Channel 4 soap's historic time jump. The devastating death of baby Noah and his much-loved relationship with Leela spring to mind as stories that truly left an impact on audiences. It's safe to say that Rory always understood the assignment and he will certainly be missed!
