FIA Approves General Motors F1 Power Unit For Cadillac Team In 2029
Cadillac's Formula One effort has taken another step forward.
TWG GM Performance Power Units LLC., a company formed by TWG Motorsports and General Motors, has been approved by the FIA for use in 2029. The Cadillac F1 team will become the 11th team on the grid starting in 2026 and will use Ferrari power units for the three years leading to the now approved unit from GM.
Development and testing of the prototype engine will continue with plans for a dedicated facility for GM Performance Power Units closed to General Motor's Charlotte Technical Center in 2026.
The approval is significant in that the Cadillac F1 effort will be wholly U.S. based by 2029. TWG Motorsports is the effort formerly headed by Michael Andretti under the Andretti Autosports umbrella. TWG Motorsports has said that they plan to have at least one American driver in the two car team.
Russ O'Blenes who was named CEO of the new venture said that with approval from FIA, they would continue to accelerate efforts to bring an American-built F1 power unit to the grid.
'Over two years ago, the FIA approved the entry of an eleventh team into the FIA Formula One World Championship, guided by my vision to expand the grid and bring new talent and opportunity to our sport,' said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem adding that although the process was at times challenging – eluding to Andretti stepping aside as the head the effort and into the role of ambassador and advisor, to allow TWG Motorsports to eventually gain approval on the grid, 'the progress we see today affirms the journey has been worthwhile.'
Ben Sulayem said that 'welcoming GM Performance Power Units LLC. as an approved power unit supplier for the Championship starting in 2029 marks another step in the global expansion of Formula 1 and highlights the growing interest from world-class automotive manufacturers like General Motors.'
'Their dedication to innovation, sustainability, and competition is fully aligned with the FIA's vision for the future of our sport. It also strengthens our commitment to making motorsport more accessible and inclusive worldwide—welcoming new manufacturers, advancing technology, and connecting with a broader, more diverse fan base.'

More than 15,000 nurses at hospitals in the Twin Cities and 2,600 nurses at hospitals in Duluth have been negotiating a new contract that has yet to come to fruition, and the deadlock is resulting in an "informational picket" outside 13 hospitals in Minnesota on Wednesday. Contracts for Twin Cities nurses expired last week and those for nurses in Duluth are set to expire on June 30. The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) has announced that workers will participate in a picket amid concerns that hospitals are operating at unsafe staffing levels that compromise patient care and push many nurses to leave the profession. "Nurses are doing everything they can to keep patients safe, but we are being stretched beyond our limits," Chris Rubesch, a nurse and president of the MNA, said in May. "Patients are facing longer waits, and overworked staff are facing dangerous conditions." Additionally, nurses fear for their physical safety at current staffing levels. Healthcare workers are five times more likely to be injured by an assault on the job than the average American worker, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That report also shows that healthcare workers saw a steady rise in the rate of nonfatal workplace violence from 2011 to 2018. A 2002 study reported that in hospitals with a high patient-to-nurse ratio, each extra patient assigned to a nurse is associated with a 7% increase in the likelihood of death within 30 days of admission, per Minnesota Public Radio. Additionally, that study showed that the stress of each new patient assigned to those nurses was associated with a significant increase in the risk of burnout. The current staffing levels "prioritize maximizing revenue rather than protecting patients," the union claims. "MNA nurses are sounding the alarm: hospital executives are treating staffing like a budget line, not a life-or-death issue," the MNA said in a statement. "On June 4, the public will see what solidarity looks like and what happens when nurses step up to protect their patients." In a statement to Bring Me The News, Allina Health reiterated that there will be no disruption to patient care during the picket, adding, "Now, more than ever, negotiations must reflect the reality of rising costs, declining reimbursements and uncertainty around programs like Medicaid. We remain focused on a responsible contract agreement that ensures we can maintain access to care and the high-quality services people depend on." The pickets will take place at 11 Twin Cities hospitals, including Children's Minnesota/United Hospital at 33 Smith Ave. N in St. Paul and, later in the day, at Fairview Southdale Hospital at 6401 France Ave. S in Edina. In Duluth, nurses will hold informational pickets at Essentia and Aspirus St. Luke's hospitals. "The nurses' union is expending considerable energy on events such as this when that energy would be better spent at the negotiating table, completing these talks," says Paul Omodt of Omodt & Associates, a PR company that specializes in crisis management and represents several of the hospitals involved in the negotiations. "There are important topics left to discuss and we remain ready to negotiate in good faith. We encourage the nurses' union to bring forth all the counterproposals that are due to move these talks forward." The MNA's action is separate but in step with a picket that took place at four Allina clinics on Tuesday morning among unionized doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. This group unionized in October 2023, forming the largest private-sector doctors' union in the country with roughly 600 members at Allina clinics in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is still at the table, negotiating for the group's first contract. The contract negotiations have slowed, with a significant point of friction being that primary care physicians are looking to be compensated for administrative work that includes paperwork and responding to patient emails, the Star Tribune reports. A representative for Allina tells Bring Me The News that it is negotiating in good faith with the Doctors Council SEIU and seeks "to reach responsible agreements that maintain competitive pay and benefits for our providers while ensuring that we can sustain our caring mission during these extremely uncertain economic times." According to social media users' posts and videos, this consideration followed FIFA receiving thousands of complaints from players, coaches and fans who refused to travel to the U.S. due to concerns over stringent immigration policies imposed by President Donald Trump's administration. For example, in late May, TikTok user @raulneedshappiness published a video (archived) with the text caption, "Trump Might Lose the 2026 World Cup for the U.S." The clip received over 800,000 views. The clip's voice narrator recounted the story as follows: Breaking news. The 2026 World Cup might be taken away from the United States, and it's all being blamed on President Trump. FIFA is now facing a massive logistical nightmare after receiving thousands of complaints from players, coaches and fans refusing to travel to the U.S. The reason? Trump's harsh immigration policies have sparked fear, tension and international backlash. Some athletes and staff say they're worried about being detained or deported, even with valid visas. Fans across the globe are calling the U.S. unsafe for hosting such a massive event like the World Cup. The situation has become so heated that several countries are now threatening to boycott the tournament if it stays in the U.S., something that goes completely against the unifying spirit of football. With the pressure mounting, FIFA is seriously considering moving the event to Mexico and Canada, seen as safer, more welcoming alternatives. Rather, this matter marked the latest chapter of users sharing false or unfounded rumors with the aid of artificial-intelligence (AI) tools. Snopes contacted FIFA's media relations representatives to inquire about the rumor's accuracy and will update this article with more information as it becomes available. The @raulneedshappiness user's TikTok video featured a label accessible to creators when uploading new content that read, "Creator labeled as AI-generated." The video resembled clips Snopes reviewed for previous stories that featured AI-generated elements. The video's illegible letters and words, as well as its shiny, cartoonish depictions of people, clearly signaled its AI origins. In order for humans to create such clips with AI, all they need to do is type a short text prompt to instruct a generative AI tool to produce what they would like to see. That AI tool then quickly handles all of the editing, scripting, visuals and voice narration, and provides a video file for download. The TikTok account @satire_now, which shares satirical content, published a video (archived) discussing part of the same rumor. According to a website that helps pin down the exact time a TikTok user uploaded a video (information not publicly displayed on the platform), the satirical video appeared almost 24 hours after the @raulneedshappiness account posted its AI-generated clip. In other words, as its owner confirmed in a private message to Snopes, @satire_now did not start the rumor. Further, Snopes didn't locate any indication of the rumor originating from a source describing its output as satire, as of this writing. The aforementioned lookups of search engines located some relevant news regarding Trump's policies and the 2026 World Cup, though again no reports confirmed the central claim about FIFA seriously considering moving U.S.-hosted games to Canada or Mexico. For example, in March, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Trump at the White House, with FIFA reporting Trump reaffirmed support for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and 2026 World Cup tournaments. On April 25, The Associated Press reported U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, a member of the Democratic Party in Oregon, asked the Trump administration to reconsider policies impacting travelers arriving in the U.S., including citing upcoming sporting events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. In early May, NBC News reported members of Trump's Cabinet warned World Cup visitors to the U.S. not to overstay their visas. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also cast the tournament as "an opportunity for the world to become a friendlier place," adding, "We will take care of their documentation and travel documents, and it will go smoothly. And we will make sure that they can come and enjoy and bring their families and friends and make memories together." On May 13, Politico (archived) reported the details of a letter (archived) the Human Rights Watch organization addressed to Infantino. The letter cited Human Rights Watch's "grave concerns" about Trump's immigration policies, and urged Infantino to be "prepared to reconsider the hosting decision" if the safety of fans and players couldn't be guaranteed. Other reports told of concerns about long visa appointment wait times, as well as European countries issuing travel advisories for the U.S. Two days later, on May 15, Reuters (archived) reported Infantino reassured that "the world is welcome in America," referencing the 2025 and 2026 tournaments.
