British hopeful Emile Cairess ruled out of London Marathon by injury
British hopeful Emile Cairess has been ruled out of the London Marathon after suffering an ankle injury.
Cairess clocked the second-fastest time by a British athlete on his way to a third-placed finish at the event last year, and looked set to again lead home hopes.
But an ongoing ankle tendon issue has scuppered his chances of featuring on the roads of the capital, preventing a tilt at Mo Farah 's national record of 2hr 5min 11sec.
'I was really looking forward to racing the world's best marathon runners and to build on the progress I have made over the marathon distance,' the 27-year-old athlete said.
'It is an absolutely stacked elite men's field at this year's event which makes it a really hard one to miss. But, unfortunately, a setback in my buildup has persisted which has significantly impacted the consistency of training that is required to be at my best. My focus now is recovering properly, getting back to full training and returning to racing as soon as possible.'
The 27-year-old Yorkshireman finished fourth at Paris 2024 on debut at the Olympics and had hoped to build on a breakthrough year.
The elite men's field remains exceptionally strong even with the Briton absent, with Jacob Kiplimo, the new half-marathon world record holder, tipped by many to challenge the 26.2-mile mark in 2025.
Defending champion Alex Mutiso, former world record-holder Eliud Kipchoge and Olympic champion Tamirat Tola are also set to compete on Sunday 27 April.

Florian Wirtz criticised after Liverpool transfer U-turn - 'It's a real shame'
Florian Wirtz is closing in on a move to Liverpool after rejecting Bayern Munich and the transfer has been called a "real shame" for the Bundesliga by Hans-Joachim Watzke Florian Wirtz's impending move to Liverpool has been branded a "real shame" by Borussia Dortmund chief Hans-Joachim Watzke. Liverpool have agreed a deal worth £116million with Bayer Leverkusen and Wirtz is set to arrive in the UK for his medical later this week. The Reds are due to pay £100m up front plus an additional £16m in add-ons and the deal will break the British transfer record if those bonuses are achieved. Both Manchester City and Bayern Munich were also interested in signing the 22-year-old. City viewed Wirtz as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, but pulled out of the race due to financial concerns and have since spent £46.3m on Tijjani Reijnders and £34m on Rayan Cherki instead. Bayern, meanwhile, missed out on Wirtz after the player was convinced to join Liverpool by manager Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes. However, Watzke is disappointed to see one of Germany's top talents leaving the Bundesliga and claims he would have preferred to see Wirtz join Bayern. "It's a real shame, especially for the DFL (German Football League), that a player like Florian Wirtz is disappearing from the Bundesliga," Watzke told kicker. "I wouldn't have had a problem at all if he had gone to FC Bayern. "That would have been better for the Bundesliga. He could have played better with Musiala in Munich, but two such good footballers find each other anyway." Bayern star Joshua Kimmich has also spoken out about his club's failed move for Wirtz, with the midfielder claiming they are now short of attacking options after Leroy Sane joined Galatasaray and it was announced that Thomas Muller will be leaving when his contract expires. "You'll have to ask the club what their plans are," Kimmich said. "Of course, you have the feeling that we could do something – with Flo (Wirtz) not coming, with Leroy leaving, with Thomas leaving. "I was surprised that (Sane) is going to Turkey. I didn't expect that. But it's his decision and he'll have his reasons for it." Kimmich's comments after Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl explained that the club would not have been able to match money Liverpool are paying for Wirtz. "I am sure that we will have a competitive team - and that we will also have the finances under control," Eberl said. "If I'm honest, I don't know if we could have paid what Liverpool are apparently paying now. Florian Wirtz is an outstanding player. We could have imagined signing him. But when a door closes, another opens. The focus is on the squad we have here. We've brought along some young players, and now we've added two Germany internationals in Tom Bischof and Jonathan Tah, who have come in on free transfers. That's already a big step."

Milos Kerkez key issue resolved amid Florian Wirtz's Liverpool medical delay
Florian Wirtz's Liverpool medical may have been paused until Friday but the transfer for Milos Kerkez is set to proceed soon after Bournemouth agreed a deal for his replacement Florian Wirtz is set to have his Liverpool medical on Friday with the delay put down to the £116m signing wanting to go on holiday first. Germany playmaker Wirtz will be a British record transfer once the deal is made official at the end of the week after the Reds agreed to stump up £100m with an additional £16m of add-ons. Wirtz is poised to become Arne Slot's third new addition this summer. Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili have already completed moves, while Liverpool have helped fund some of their summer spending by selling second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to Brentford and Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid for £10m despite there only being a month remaining on his contract. And once the Wirtz deal is announced the club are also set to seal the signing of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth with the left-back expected to usurp Andrew Robertson as first choice. Here are the transfer stories to keep an eye on from in and around Anfield. Kerkez close The Kerkez deal took a major step closer on Monday afternoon because Bournemouth agreed a deal to sign Adrien Truffert from Rennes for £14.3m - with the Frenchman brought in as the replacement for the soon to depart Hungary international. And some reports now say that the signing of Kerkez could be wrapped up by the end of this week too as Slot's squad is further strengthened ahead of their attempt to retain the Premier League title next season. Nunez price Liverpool are said to be willing to accept an offer in the region of €60million (£51m) to sell Darwin Nunez this summer - just months after they rejected a more lucrative proposal for the striker from Saudi Arabia. Nunez, 25, is expected to leave Anfield after a disappointing campaign in front of goal for the newly minted Premier League champions. And there have already been discussions over a potential move away, according to reports elsewhere. The Uruguay international is known to have suitors in the Middle East with Al-Nassr making a £60m bid for the frontman back in January, only to be rebuffed. Ekitike too pricey Wirtz is not the only Bundesliga star on Liverpool's radar this summer – but a deal for Hugo Ekitike is likely to appear beyond their reach because Eintracht Frankfurt chief Markus Krosche is standing firm on holding out for £85m for the striker. 'If the price isn't right, then he'll just stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo,' Krosche told German media. Ekitike had also been of interest to Chelsea, who have already signed Liam Delap from Ipswich and made his debut in the FIFA Club World Cup last night.
