These home builds made headlines in Hamilton. What went wrong?

A home build in Hamilton's north end coined the 'Leaning Tower on Ferrie.' Construction of a new house that caused the house next door to be demolished. A property owner hauled into court on the Mountain over an unsanctioned build.
The Spectator has reported on these local problematic building projects over the last few years.
While different, all three have required some level of intervention by the city, whether due to concerns around the structure, impacts on surrounding homes or allegedly bad building practices.
One case resulted in more than a dozen provincial offences against the homeowner, while the other two situations saw people forced to flee their homes. In one of those instances, residents in the Lansdale neighbourhood lost their home because it was 'no longer habitable.'
Here is a recap of those stories:
While
construction appears to now be going smoothly
on a new home at 75 Ferrie St. E. in the North End, that wasn't always the case for the property that made headlines in early 2024.
An off-duty city building inspector noticed that a home under construction on Ferrie Street East appeared unsafe and notified the city in early January 2024.

A city building inspector quickly deemed the structure 'unsafe and at risk of failure,' leading to a nearly weeklong evacuation of neighbouring homes as the building was stabilized with steel columns — work that was completed by the city as the owner was unable to.
The city then ordered the owner to fix the structure, but that didn't happen, leading the city to step in once again.
The structure was then partially demolished by the city so it would no longer pose a threat to the safety of the neighbourhood. The site was later turned back over to the owner.
Throughout the incident, the city spent roughly $294,000 stabilizing and partially demolishing the structure — costs that were billed back to the owner on the tax roll of the property.

Later, the city alleged that the builder of the home strayed from the original plans approved by the city, leading the structure, once coined the 'Leaning Tower on Ferrie,' to become unstable.
Those supposed variances included changes to the framing methods, which differed from the approved engineer plans provided to the city during the permit application — but the troubles didn't stop there.
City officials also noted that the home may 'not have been adequately designed to resist the imposed loads,' as well as a lack of shoring during the construction process.
It appears those issues have since been resolved, according to a recent update from the city to The Spectator.
Last September, the city issued a revised building permit to the owner of the property and construction at the site is 'proceeding in the normal manner,' with ongoing inspections by city staff, according to a statement.
The ongoing
building saga around 279 Bonaventure Dr.
on Hamilton Mountain began late one Friday night in April 2021, when the original home exploded due to a buildup of natural gas.
Since then, the property owner has been the subject of lawsuits from neighbours and a legal challenge by the city after dozens of charges were laid in connection with a new home build that began on the site last year.
As reported by The Spectator, the owner of the property has been fined roughly 16 times — to the tune of more than $10,000 — by the city regarding construction at the site, which initially began back in late 2023 and continued in 2024 before permits were issued.

The most recent news on the property comes after the owner was issued a building permit from the city. However, staff have since alleged that construction happening inside the home isn't matching up with approved building plans.
The owner of the property was issued an order to comply by the city, but work appeared to be continuing on the site as of early May.
A family lost their home in the process of
the construction of a new house
just off Barton Street East earlier this year.
In early April, city staff responded to reports of a 'compromised foundation' of a home at 54 St. Matthews Ave., near Barton Street East and Wentworth Street North, as reported by The Spec.

The foundation had been 'compromised to the point that the house was imminently unsafe' during construction of a new home at 56 St. Matthews Ave., a city spokesperson previously told The Spectator.
Residents at 54 and 58 St. Matthews — brick houses on either side of the affected property — were forced to evacuate from their homes, as the city put safety fencing around 56 St. Matthews and called in a professional engineer to assess the situation.
The professional engineer found 54 St. Matthews was 'no longer habitable,' forcing its demolition on April 13. Meanwhile, the residents of the other affected property returned home.
A stop-work order was issued for 56 St. Matthews on April 4, however, it's unclear if that order was rescinded by the city. Costs for the safety fencing and the professional engineer's report have both been billed back to the owner of 56 St. Matthews.

While neighbours of the project questioned the construction of the home, which was approved by the city, a spokesperson told The Spectator that they would not be laying charges.
Instead, the situation was being examined by insurance companies of the affected property owners. A Ministry of Labour investigation was also launched at the site, but a spokesperson for the province would not provide any further details around the nature of that probe.

Sisters of missing Greg Monks reveal 'alarm bells' moment after disappearance

The sisters of missing man Greg Monks, who disappeared during a stag do in Portugal, have revealed the "alarm bells" moment. The 38-year-old plant mechanic from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, disappeared in the early hours of Wednesday morning, May 28, while out with mates on the Albufeira Strip. However, he never returned. The last confirmed sighting of him was around 3:27am in the Cerro de Aguia area. According to Google Maps, this area is around an hour and 20 minute walk from the main strip in Albufeira. Greg's cousin Alison Fraser posted a statement on Facebook. It reads: 'I'm Greg's cousin and I'm here in Albufeira, this is the last official sighting of Greg at around 3.27am on Wednesday, May 28. 'He was walking by the villa, circling and in the direction of the arrow. Please share, particularly with any local residents' groups.' In an interview with Sky News, Greg's sisters, Jillian and Carlyn, described the family's anguish. Jillian said: "We were contacted on Wednesday afternoon asking if there was any way we could track his phone because he hadn't come home from the night before. "This immediately raised alarm bells. It's just not like him. He wouldn't normally do something like this. "It had only been twelve hours since he was seen, but we were just so worried." Initially, police didn't take the missing person report seriously due to the short time since his disappearance, but as concern mounted, Portuguese authorities escalated the search. Jillian said police have since been 'working day and night' and 'using every resource they can' to find him. CCTV footage has shown Greg walking alone in the Cerro de Aguia area, a quiet, rural part of Albufeira filled with trees, rocks, and cliffs. (Image: Alison Fraser/Facebook) Jillian added: "The family flew out on Thursday evening just to try and get some answers. "The police had said he was seen on CCTV in a residential area, Cerro de Aguia. "He's been spotted twice walking alone on CCTV around there. It's residential and quite rural with a lot of trees and rocks and cliffs." Describing Greg as 'quiet, hardworking, and a great godfather and uncle,' Jillian said his girlfriend Nicole is 'heartbroken and trying to keep it together.' Carlyn added: 'He's a real family man. This just isn't like him. We're trying to hold each other up and keep fighting to find him.' The Glasgow Times reported last week that the family has made a public appeal for anyone in the Cerro de Aguia area with doorbell or home security footage between 2am and 5am on May 28 to come forward. READ MORE: Family of Glasgow man missing in Portugal in CCTV plea Jillian pleaded: "If you see his picture and know anything, any tiny little bit of information, just get in touch, let us know where he last was. Carlyn added: "If you live in the area or any of the surrounding areas and have any home security cameras or anything that could capture him travelling around, please check it." Greg was due to fly back to Scotland on May 30, but he never made the flight. We previously reported that a fundraiser was set up to support the family's search efforts. The GoFundMe has already raised over £21,000. READ MORE: A statement published on the page reads: 'I have been asked by the family to set this up. Our son Greg Monks, 38, went to Portugal for a stag do on Tuesday, May 27. 'On their first night out, our son Greg never returned to his hotel and has now been reported missing for three days. 'We are desperately seeking Greg's safe return and need your help. There are professional search teams out looking for Greg, and the family have all flown out to try and help find him, but they don't know how long their stay will be. 'They are doing everything they can. Every donation, no matter the size, will make a difference in our efforts to bring Greg home. 'Thank you for your support and prayers.' The Glasgow Times reported that Greg's disappearance had been reported to police, the hotel where he was staying, and the British Embassy in Portugal by his family. A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: 'We are supporting the family of a British man reported missing in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities'. Erika Jayne's Ex Tom Girardi Sentenced to Over 7 Years in Prison

Originally appeared on E! Online Tom Girardi will be spending several years behind bars. Nine months after Erika Jayne's estranged husband was found guilty of four counts of wire fraud related to an embezzlement scheme at his law firm Girardi Keese, he was sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison, according to U.S. attorney Bilal A. Essayli. 'This self-proclaimed 'champion of justice' was nothing more than a thief and a liar who conned his vulnerable clients out of the millions of dollars,' Essayli said in a June 3 press release. 'My office will vigorously prosecute corrupt lawyers and those who assist them in criminal activities.' In addition to Girardi's time behind bars, the 86-year-old has been ordered to pay a $35,000 fine and $2,310,247 in restitution to the victims of his embezzlement scheme, in which he was convicted of stealing millions of dollars from his clients—including relatives of victims of a 2018 plane crash that killed 189 people—to pay for both his law firm's and his own personal expenses. 'Years of hard work went into this case by agents and prosecutors motivated to pursue justice for the victims who were betrayed by Girardi after putting their trust in his corrupt law firm in their time of need and while enduring personal hardship.' Girardi, who had pleaded not guilty to the charges ahead of his trial, has been ordered by the court to surrender to federal authorities by July 17. E! News has reached out to Girardi's attorney for comment and has not heard back. Though Jayne had been previously named in a 2020 fraud lawsuit as a person who aided and abetted her estranged husband's alleged crimes, she was found in 2022 to have 'no actual knowledge' of Girardi's dealings, according to court documents obtained by E! Man accused of spray painting swastika outside home in Lincoln Heights

A White man living in the predominantly Black suburb of Lincoln Heights is accused of painting racist symbols outside a home in his village. Tyler Fout, 18, is charged in Hamilton County Municipal Court with ethnic intimidation and criminal damaging, both misdemeanors. On May 31, Fout spray painted a swastika on the walkway of a house in the village, as well as the letters "WP" on the driveway and patio, according to a criminal complaint. The Enquirer has reached out to his public defender seeking comment. The Anti-Defamation League says "WP" is sometimes an acronym for the term "White power," which is often used as a chant by White supremacists. It's commonly seen as a tattoo or graffiti. The incident in Lincoln Heights came just days after officials in neighboring Evendale unveiled the findings of a third-party consulting firm's review of the police response to a Feb. 7 neo-Nazi demonstration on the Vision Way overpass. Jail records show Fout was booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center on May 31. He is next expected to appear in court on June 6 before Judge Mike Peck.
