PM Anwar Emphasises Youth Integrity in Governance Reform
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed the importance of strengthening good governance practices at all levels and to instil the values of integrity among the younger generation, as future leaders of the nation.
Anwar said the matter was raised during the Lembaga Tatakelola Dewan Kenegaraan meeting today, where several key issues concerning national administrative reform were discussed.
'Emphasis was also placed on the role of youth, including teenagers and young adults, in understanding and embracing the values of integrity, accountability, and responsibility in administration and leadership,' he said.
'This effort, among others, is being implemented through a strategic approach involving the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, in collaboration with the Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) and various stakeholders,' he said in a Facebook post today.
Anwar stressed that it is a priority to cultivate and strengthen awareness of good governance values and principles from an early age.
'This is not merely about shaping individuals with integrity, but about producing a future generation of national leaders capable of fulfilling the aspirations of the people with full trust and professionalism,' he added.

PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government's decision to expand the scope of the sales and service tax on imported products, saying it is targeted at high-income earners. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said food items such as avocados and cod fish, which were imported, were generally purchased by the wealthy. 'If the rich want to eat avocados, then they will need to pay a little more,' he said at an event in Ipoh, Perak, today. On June 9, the finance ministry announced that a 5% to 10% rate will be imposed on non-essential goods from July 1, although basic necessities would not be taxed. Still, the announcement triggered brickbats. Other food items which will be slapped with a 5% tax include king crabs, salmon and truffles. Anwar also touched on the brouhaha over imported bananas, which were included in the revised list of items to be checked. He said locally produced bananas like pisang emas and pisang rastali would not be taxed. He urged the public to compare the expansion of the SST with the goods and services tax, which he said was even imposed on basic necessities like sugar and flour. 'Even though the rate was low, the rakyat had to bear the GST,' he said. Anwar admitted that while it was easier to implement the GST when compared to the SST, he wondered if the government should tax fishermen, small-time farmers and street sweepers. He said that whatever revenue was generated from tax collection would be used to increase the salaries of civil servants, social aid such as the 'Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah', and to develop infrastructure. Anwar said the government had allocated RM13 billion for the STR cash aid for the B40 and M40 groups to help cushion the impact of the rising cost of living. 'I really hope the public understands this,' he said.

Umno must remain in govt to push Malay, Bumiputera agenda
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will remain in the federal government to continue championing the Malay and Bumiputera agenda, said party deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He described the decision as a strategic move, warning that exiting the government would simply allow another party to take its place. "If we leave, another party will fill the gap within two hours. We don't want to be spectators on the sidelines. "It is better to be in government, where we can drive new agendas suited to today's realities," he said. Mohamad, who is also the Rembau member of parliament, was speaking after launching the Cheras Umno division delegates meeting here today. He cited Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as one of the party's key focus areas. Although the portfolio is traditionally under the Human Resources Ministry, he said Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had taken the lead in addressing gaps, particularly affecting Malay youths. "Many are not dropping out because they failed exams, but because they never sat for them. "That's why we introduced the National TVET Policy, the National Tahfiz Policy and several other initiatives," he said. Mohamad said Umno was undertaking internal reforms to adapt to a shifting political landscape, following setbacks in the 2022 general election. "The political reality now is that no party, anywhere in the world, can govern alone. That era has ended. "We must be realistic. Although we have 192 divisions, our strategy should focus on constituencies we can win. "Political idealism can be misleading and dangerous," he said. He also expressed pride in Umno's internal unity, saying it was one of the few stable parties in the country. "No one will support a party that's in disarray.
