Eighteen residents of the Siyasatnagar locality at Chandola filed a petition on Monday evening and sought urgent intervention by the HC by staying the demolition, which already began. Justice Mauna Bhatt granted them an urgent hearing on Tuesday when the high court was functioning on account of a public holiday.
Their counsel,

, submitted that the petitioners are Indian citizens and lived in this area for nearly 50 years, and they have ample documents to establish their citizenship.
The demolition process was opposed on the ground that the residents were not issued any eviction notice as mandated by the
order. It was contended that the petitioners are not the owners of the land, but there is also no demarcation and delimitation map under the
CRZ
notification to indicate that they are occupying the waterbody.
Moreover, it was contended that the residents be given the benefit of the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme of the State of Gujarat 2010, as amended in 2013, and they should not be evicted without providing alternative accommodation.
It was also contended that the demolition drive was undertaken on the pretext of taking action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, but such an action is illegal until a competent authority decides about the citizenship of the suspected people.
The state govt opposed the plea by arguing that the land occupied is a notified waterbody, and this kind of unauthorised occupation and construction does not warrant any prior eviction notice.

Moreover, it argued that the Chandola locality, according to an intelligence report, is a threat to the security of the state. After hearing the arguments, Justice Mauna Bhatt refused to stay the demolition on the basis of the state govt's contention that the petitioners reside on the notified land. The HC has kept the petition pending, and further hearing will take place in June.

Man goes back on promise to marry woman with ‘aggressive sexual trait'
New Delhi: Supreme Court has quashed rape charges against a man who had a consensual physical relationship with a 30-year-old woman but backed out of his marriage promise after observing her "aggressive sexual behaviour, obsessive nature, and manipulative and vindictive tendencies". Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Allowing the man's plea to quash the FIRs lodged against him by Cyberabad police in 2022 on the woman's complaints accusing him of establishing a physical relationship with the promise of marriage, a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta said, "The facts on record clearly establish the vindictive and manipulative tendencies of the complainant and these aspects have a great bearing on the controversy." Writing the judgment, Justice Mehta said allowing the man's prosecution would be nothing but gross abuse of the process of law and the complaints were "nothing but a bundle of lies full of fabricated and malicious unsubstantiated allegations levelled by the complainant (woman)". The court was informed about a similar complaint the woman had lodged against an assistant professor at Osmania University in 2021, where she was studying. What rescued the man in the present case was the chats of the woman, who went by the name 'Muffin' on social media. In the chats, she admitted to being manipulative and her desire to "get a green card holder". "At one point of time, she also stated that it would not be difficult for her to trap the next one. In the very same breath, she mentions that she would not waste time with the accused appellant and needs to 'invest on the next victim'. She also mentions that she would irritate her victims to the extent that they dump her, and she could happily start with the next one. She also stated that she was using the accused appellant," the bench recorded in its judgment. "These chats depict the stark reality about the behavioural pattern of the de-facto complainant who appears to be having manipulative and vindictive tendencies. Quashing the FIRs, the SC said, "Hence, even assuming that the accused appellant retracted from his promise to marry the complainant, it cannot be said that he indulged in sexual intercourse with the de-facto complainant under a false promise of marriage or that the offence was committed by him with the de-facto complainant on the ground that she belonged to the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes community."

In New York, Khalistan backers heckle doctor who aided 2020-21 farm stir; Dr Swaiman says he is proud of Indian roots, Tricolour
Bathinda: Dr Swaiman Singh, who played a vital role during the 2020-21 farm stir on Delhi borders, was heckled by pro-Khalistan individuals at a gurdwara in New York on Sunday afternoon. The pro-Khalistan elements were angry because he displayed the Indian tricolour during the farmers' protest. The show of resentment came just days ahead of Sikhs across the world remembering those who were killed in Indian Army's Operation Bluestar at Golden Temple on June 6, 1984. Despite the opposition, Dr Swaiman stood his ground and delivered a speech for which he was invited by New York Sikh Cultural Society. A large congregation was held at the NY Sikh Cultural Society Gurdwara on Sunday afternoon (early hours of Monday in India). Dr Swaiman and former New York governor Andrew Mark Cuomo were invited by the society to deliver a lecture. Undeterred, Dr Swaiman delivered his response, challenging the group to open dialogue. Speaking to TOI over the phone from the US, Dr Swaiman said it was true that Sikhs living in various parts of the world were angry over the way their revered religious place was attacked by the govt in 1984, and how justice had not been delivered till now. "But, being an Indian, I have displayed the tricolour a number of times, and I am proud of it. Whatever happened in 1984 was an attack by a govt of a particular political party, it does not denote all of India. We may be angry with the govt or party, but not with India," he said. Dr Swaiman added he too had been branded a "Khalistani" in the past and this was not right. "ThzZ country should look into the grievances of Sikhs and deliver justice. But, just some people opposing me cannot undermine my commitment the people of my nation, where my team is regularly working," he added. The NY Sikh Cultural Society Gurdwara remains a vital community hub, fostering dialogue and cultural unity. "This incident highlights the need for constructive conversations to bridge divides within our communities," he said. Dr Swaiman's family belongs to Tarn Taran district in Punjab. During the farm struggle, his organisation, '5 Rivers Heart Association', held medical camps at the protest site to help the protesters.
