Jetstar passenger's $3,000 suitcase mistake prompts warning to Aussie travellers
A Jetstar passenger is urging Aussies not to make the same mistake as him after his luggage went missing following a flight from Melbourne to Brisbane three months ago.
Brady Watson, 25, jetted north for a work trip at the end of March and, in a rush, grabbed the wrong suitcase at the baggage carousel. He took it home, opened it up, realised it was not his, and promptly returned it to the airport. He was told the other passenger did not take his bag, but it was nowhere to be found.
"I took the bag straight back and thought it would just be a seamless transition... but staff said, 'Oh, we actually don't know where your bag has gone'," he told Yahoo News. "It's now been three months and I still don't have it back."
Brady claims the airline has made it increasingly more difficult to chase up information, allegedly speaking to several different staff members from different departments who he said hadn't seemed to have communicated with one another.
"I've spoken to four different people and no one knows where my bag is. It's all very inconsistent, and it's annoying having to explain the situation to all these different people at Jetstar," he said. Brady said Jetstar make the process of getting your bag back as hard as possible "so eventually you just give up".
Brady is hoping for some kind of reimbursement but Jetstar and Brisbane Airport both believe his bag was stolen from the airport before he came back to return the other passenger's bag.
The airline told Yahoo News it "acknowledged this has been a really frustrating and inconvenient experience for Mr Watson and our customer service team has done everything they can to assist him".
Jetstar said Brady's luggage was flown from Melbourne to Brisbane, and it was put on the baggage carousel after his flight, but someone had taken his bag at the airport.
"On the day, Mr Watson mistakenly collected the wrong bag. After his bag couldn't be found, Jetstar understands airport CCTV showed his bag had been taken by someone else and a police investigation was launched," the Jetstar spokesperson said. "Despite everyone's best efforts, it has not been possible to recover Mr Watson's bag.
"We know this is an incredibly disappointing outcome, and our team is willing to provide any further assistance we can to the police investigation."
Yahoo News understands Jetstar will not be providing any compensation to Brady.
Brisbane Airport also say someone had stolen Brady's suitcase from the carousel and the issue is now a police matter.
"Despite reviewing video from multiple CCTV cameras, it has not been possible to identify who took the bag, and this is now a matter for police," Brisbane Airport said in a statement provided to Yahoo News.
"Incidents like this are extremely rare, and we understand how distressing it would be for the passenger involved. We'd like to take this opportunity to remind all travellers to carefully check that they have collected the correct luggage before leaving the baggage carousel area."
In written correspondence from Queensland Police to Brady, seen by Yahoo News, he was told that the CCTV footage was inconclusive due to the placement of the cameras near carousel 1 where Brady's luggage was allegedly collected from.
Brady is disappointed the investigation has not recovered his bag which had most of his belongings inside. He had just recently moved to Melbourne and bought clothing for the colder weather. He didn't have travel insurance, explaining he didn't think he would need it for a domestic flight.
"All my clothes were in the suitcase, I had just moved to Melbourne and wasn't ready for the cold... the clothes were worth about $3,000. It was a lot of stuff," he said. "You don't expect to need travel insurance when you're flying domestically for only two hours.
Brady claims he's now spent $1,500 replacing the lost clothes and is urging others to invest in AirTags.
"Put AirTags on your luggage so you can track it down Liam Neeson style," he warned. "And I guess don't fly Jetstar, but what other option do we have. They are definitely the cheapest airline, and they're the cheapest for a reason... Just hug your luggage extra tight the night before your flight because you might not see it again."

Australians receiving the Age Pension from Centrelink are being reminded their payments and concession cards could be impacted if they head overseas. Millions of Aussies are gearing up to head abroad, with one airport saying this year was shaping up to be its "busiest winter ever" for international travel. While most people can continue to get the Age Pension "paid indefinitely" while they are travelling outside of Australia, there are some exceptions. That includes people who are planning to travel for more than six weeks. Services Australia community services officer Justin Bott said the pension you received would change depending on how long you were away for and whether you were leaving to live in another country. 'After six weeks, your pension rate will automatically go down as the Energy Supplement stops and the Pension Supplement reduces to the basic rate. They stay at the reduced rate until you return to Australia. 'After six weeks, your Pensioner Concession Card will be cancelled. A new card will be issued when you return to Australia if eligible.' The Energy Supplement is currently $14.10 a fortnight for singles and $21.20 a fortnight combined for couples. The maximum Pension Supplement is $83.60 per fortnight for singles and $126 for couples combined. If you travel for 26 weeks, or six months, your age pension rate may reduce depending on how long you've lived in Australia between the ages of 16 and age pension age. This is known as your Australian Working Life Residence. 'If you've been an Australian resident for 35 years or more between the ages of 16 and age pension age, then there will be no change,' Bott said. 'If you've been a resident for less than 35 years, then the rate of pension you get will be based on how long you were a resident during that 35-year period.' For example, if you'd been a resident for 10 years, you would get 10/35ths of your present rate of the age pension. A different calculation applies if you are travelling to New Zealand. If you are leaving to live overseas, the supplements are reduced, and your pension concession card is cancelled as soon as you leave. The easiest way to tell Services Australia about your overseas travel plans and find out the impact on your Age Pension is to use your Centrelink online account through myGov. Sydney Airport is expecting more than 2.5 million passengers during the winter school holiday period, with one million passengers forecast for international travel. People on sinking Tuvalu seek Australia's climate visas
More than one-third of the people in the tiny Pacific nation of Tuvalu, which scientists predict will be submerged by rising seas, have applied for a landmark climate visa to migrate to Australia. Tuvalu's ambassador to the United Nations, Tapugao Falefou, told Reuters on Sunday he was "startled by the huge number of people vying for this opportunity", and the small community was interested to learn who the first lot of climate migrants would be. Tuvalu, one of the countries at greatest risk from climate change, which experts say is boosting sea levels, has a population of 11,000 on its nine atolls scattered across the Pacific between Australia and Hawaii. Since applications for Australia's visa lottery opened this month, 1124 people have registered, with family members bringing the total seeking the visa to 4052 under the bilateral climate and security treaty. Applications close on July 18, with an annual cap of 280 visas designed to ensure migration to Australia does not cause brain drain from Tuvalu, officials said when the treaty was announced in 2023. The visa will allow Tuvalu residents to live, work and study in Australia, accessing health benefits and education on the same basis as Australian citizens. Thrilled spectators along Australia's east coast were treated to an extraordinary sight over the weekend — a white whale calf gliding through the waves beside its mother. The heartwarming encounter was a once-in-a-lifetime moment, with white whales among the rarest creatures in the ocean. Captured by Sydney photographer Chris Prestige, the baby was spotted swimming alongside its mother off the New South Wales Mid North Coast. White colouring is extremely rare in a whale, so any similar individuals naturally raise questions about a family link. Though there's no way to tell if the two whales are in any way connected, experts say Migaloo's "genes are still out there". White whales are extremely rare due to the uncommon genetic mutations that cause their lack of pigmentation. True albinism, as seen in whales like Migaloo, is the result of a recessive gene that both parents must carry — a rare combination in wild populations. Leucism, another condition that causes pale or patchy colouring, is also unusual and not well understood in whales. In nature, pigmentation plays an important role in survival. Darker colouring helps marine animals with camouflage, sun protection, and regulating body temperature. A white whale, especially as a calf, may be more visible to predators or humans, which can reduce its chances of survival. "It's just really lucky, right place, right time," Chris told 7News. "I showed a few people in the car park there and they were like 'wow, I've never seen an albino before". Earlier this month, a white whale was spotted off the Queensland coast near K'gari, sparking excitement.
