Sikkim: Stranded tourists, family members of army personnel airlifted
Kolkata: At least 34 people, including stranded tourists and family members of army personnel, were airlifted from Chaten in North Sikkim and brought to Pakyong on Tuesday, officials said adding that search operations to trace the missing persons continued during the day.
However, till reports last came in, there was no trace of the six persons, including a Lt Col and his family, who went missing after a landslide hit an army camp at Chaten in North Sikkim late Sunday evening.
Search operations also continued near Munshithang in North Sikkim where nine tourists went missing after the vehicle, in which they were travelling, plunged into the River Teesta on May 29.
'Two MI-17 V5 helicopters airlifted 34 stranded individuals from Chaten to Pakyong Greenfield Airport. Among those rescued were seven family members of Army personnel and 27 tourists. Injured personnel were also onboard and are currently receiving necessary medical treatment. This was the first successful aerial evacuation carried out under the current emergency response plan,' said the statement issued by the Sikkim government.
While around 1,800 stranded tourists were rescued from Lachung on Monday, around 130 tourists were stranded at Lachen. The Indian Army's 112 Brigade established a foot route between Lachen and Chaten. Stranded tourists from Lachen were brought to Chaten from where they were airlifted along with family members of army personnel.
'The state government has outlined a strategic evacuation plan whereby tourists from Lachen will be moved to Chaten via the foot route and subsequently airlifted, depending on weather conditions,' said the statement.
On Tuesday, a 23-member team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), equipped with hi-tech gadgets to carry out search and rescue operations, reached Chaten where police and army were already carrying out search operations. Three bodies were recovered on Monday.
'The NDRF team from Pakyong airport reached Chaten by helicopters at 8 am and started a search and rescue operation along with army and police,' said Arun Thatal, sub-divisional officer of Chungthang in Mangan district.
On Tuesday, the Sikkim government declared the damages caused by incessant rain in Mangan district from May 28 as a disaster under section 22 (2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Police on Monday said among those missing were Lt Col Pritpal Sandhu, his wife Squadron Leader (retd) Arati B Sandhu and their daughter Amaria Sandhu, Subedar Dharamveer Singh, Sepoy Sainudheen PK and Sepoy Sunilal Muchahary.
The three deceased were identified as Havildar Lakhwindar Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur and porter Abhishek Lakhada.

'Fraud Marshal': Pakistan's Asim Munir brutally trolled in world's busiest market street
Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir was recently mocked in New York's Times Square , where he was labelled a 'Fraud Marshal' and a 'loser'. Not just Munir, the country's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif , was also trolled in the video that is now going viral on social media. The video displayed messages like 'Liar' alongside images of Asim Munir, asking him to take a polygraph test, and another that read 'The Deceiver with His Two Crooks,' featuring Munir with Pakistan's president Asif Ali Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif. — Incognito_qfs (@Incognito_qfs) It also featured pictures of Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi. One of the messages alongside a photo of Imran Khan read: "Good work makes you stand tall, not fake titles." As per a Pakistani media report, supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan, have escalated their international campaign, financing massive digital billboards in New York's Times Square, criticising Pakistan's military and current rulers. Netizens react Reactions to the Times Square billboard mocking Pakistan's Army Chief Asim Munir have been sharp across social media. Many users labelled him a "liar" and "fraud," with some sarcastically dubbing him the "Failed Marshal." Others pointed out the irony of Pakistanis themselves publicly ridiculing their own military leadership on a global stage, suggesting that the backlash is rooted in domestic anger over Munir's role in political repression, particularly the imprisonment of Imran Khan. Several comments highlighted growing dissent within the Pakistani diaspora, accusing the military of decades-long suppression of minorities and dissenting voices, turning the country into what one user called a "global embarrassment." Live Events Asim Munir's promotion by Pak govt Pakistan promoted its Army Chief, General Asim Munir, to the rare rank of Field Marshal last month. This five-star rank is the highest military honour in Pakistan and has been awarded only once before. Munir's promotion had drawn attention because it came after military setbacks against India, including Operation Sindoor and air strikes on Pakistani bases, which questioned his leadership. The promotion was seen as a strategic move to protect Munir from internal challenges within Pakistan's military. The rank of Field Marshal is traditionally awarded after a military victory, but this time it appears to serve a political purpose. Tilak Devasher, an expert on Pakistan had said, 'Field Marshal rank is usually conferred after a military victory. This may be the first time it has been awarded after a defeat—it seems intended to mask that defeat.'

Fake Army recruitment centre busted in Mainpuri; two held for duping youths
Representative image. AGRA: Mainpuri Police on Wednesday uncovered a fake army and police recruitment centre operating in the Kishani area, arresting two accused—Arvind Kumar Pandey and his associate Sumit—who allegedly duped dozens of youths with false promises of government jobs. The scam came to light after Ashok, a resident of Telangana , filed a complaint stating that he had sent his six sons—Sagar, Chandrashekhar, Srikant, Raviteja, Vijay, and Laxman—for training at the centre in 2024. Each was charged between Rs 2–3 lakh, paid through a mix of online transfers and cash. The centre was run by Pandey, who promised guaranteed placements in the police and armed forces. Ashok said he learned about the centre through a YouTube video in which Pandey appeared dressed in an Army uniform, referring to himself as 'Captain' and offering assured employment. Despite undergoing three months of training, none of Ashok's sons landed a job. When Ashok tried to contact Pandey, he stopped responding and vanished. SP Vinod Kumar said the centre, named 'Indian Police Protection Force Centre,' operated from rented premises and resembled a legitimate training institute. It displayed official-looking paraphernalia such as fake ID cards, uniforms, the Ashoka Pillar emblem, and other items to mislead candidates. The centre conducted physical drills and job-readiness sessions under the guise of pre-recruitment training. However, when candidates failed to secure jobs, Pandey blamed their 'inadequate performance.' Investigations revealed that Pandey had also launched a website and uploaded promotional content online. He used agents in other states to recruit more candidates by circulating false information. Police seized a fake air gun, medical admit cards, forged ID cards showing Pandey in uniform, laptops, letter pads, and other incriminating documents. Sumit, who assisted in preparing the fake paperwork and managed administrative work, was also arrested. Pandey has a prior criminal record and was previously jailed under IPC Section 420 for cheating. The current case has been registered under Section 318(4) of the BNS (cheating and dishonesty). Police said further investigation is underway.
