Activist Medha Patkar arrested in 24-year-old defamation case filed by Delhi L-G Saxena
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police arrested Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar on Friday after a non-bailable warrant was issued against her in connection with a 23-year-old defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena.
The case, dating back to 2000, arose from a press release Patkar issued on November 24, 2000, when Saxena led the National Council of Civil Liberties.
In it, she reportedly labelled him a "coward", accused him of being involved in hawala transactions, and alleged that he was 'mortgaging' the people and resources of Gujarat to foreign interests. A magisterial court last year ruled that these statements were defamatory and intended to provoke negative public sentiment.
Last year, on May 24, the court found her guilty of defamation. It concluded that her comments constituted a direct assault on Mr Saxena's personal integrity and his role in public service.
Following arguments on sentencing, which concluded on May 30, 2024, the court reserved its judgment on June 7. On July 1, Patkar was sentenced to five months' simple imprisonment. However, she later secured probation of good conduct, with a condition to deposit a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The sessions court, under Judge Vishal Singh of Saket Court, granted this leniency on April 8, 2025.
Despite this concession, Patkar failed to appear in court on April 23 for the formal furnishing of probation bonds and payment of the fine. Her absence, combined with non-compliance, led the court to issue a non-bailable warrant through the Commissioner of Delhi Police.
"The intention of convict Medha Patkar is apparent that she is deliberately violating the Court order; she is avoiding to appear before the Court and also avoiding to accept the terms of sentence passed against her. There is no order of suspension of sentence passed by this Court on 08/04/2025," read the court order.
Judge Singh further noted that the Court is left with no option than to enforce the production of convict Medha Patkar through coercive order. " Issue NBWs against convict Medha Patkar, through office of Commissioner of Police, Delhi Police, for next date," read the order.

The tribunal noted that the respondents failed to counter these findings or provide contrary evidence. Although the family claimed a monthly income of Rs 30,000 for the deceased, the court accepted a notional income of Rs 16,000 due to a lack of documentary proof, using Karnataka Legal Services Authority guidelines. It awarded Rs 6.4 lakh for loss of dependency. Additional compensation included Rs 48,400 in spousal consortium, Rs 18,150 each for loss of estate and funeral expenses, and Rs 40,000 each to the sons in filial consortium—bringing the total to Rs 8 lakh. The court ordered Tata AIG to deposit the compensation within a month, with 70% allocated to the wife and 15% each to the sons, along with 6% annual interest from the date of filing. Thane: A day after the train-fall incident near Mumbra killed four passengers and injured nine, passengers living in Kalyan-Dombivli and beyond are demanding that the govt implement the growth centre that the MMRDA had planned in 10 villages of Kalyan, similar to Mumbai's BKC. Such a centre would mean that people would not have to travel to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane for jobs, resulting in a reduction in local train passengers. Some passengers believe that the govt should prioritise the ongoing infrastructure projects connecting Kalyan-Dombivli to Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, which would also reduce the number of people travelling by train. A large number of people from Kalyan-Dombivli work in IT companies in Navi Mumbai. Most of them used to travel in buses, but due to the Metro Line 12 (Kalyan-Taloja metro work), this journey takes two hours instead of 40 minutes. As a result, they now travel by train, first going to Thane from Kalyan-Dombivli and then to Navi Mumbai, adding to the peak-hour crowd. Bizman's aide held for killing 62-yr-old over property row
New Delhi: A week after a burnt body was found in northwest Delhi's Alipur, Delhi Police has arrested the business partner of the deceased. According to police, the victim was allegedly putting pressure on his partner to sell a property, which ultimately led to the murder. Police said that on May 2, a partially burnt body was discovered. During an inspection of the crime scene, an empty cartridge was recovered. Efforts were made to identify the deceased, and a case of murder was registered. The deceased was later identified as Santosh Kumar, alias Masterji (62), a resident of Nathupura. Deputy commissioner of police (Outer North) Hareshwar V Swami said that after analysing hundreds of CCTV footage, examining multiple call detail records of suspects, interrogations, and relying on local intelligence, one suspect—Jagarnath Shah, alias Lala—was apprehended. Shah was last seen with the deceased. Police said, Shah, who was also the deceased's business partner, confessed to the crime upon interrogation. "Shah has been arrested. He disclosed that the deceased was putting pressure on him to sell his property in Swaroop Nagar. The weapon used in the crime, the vehicle used to commit the offence, and an empty petrol bottle have been recovered," police said. According to police, on June 1, Shah took Santosh from his office in Swaroop Vihar for a drive in his XUV car, under the pretence of discussing property matters. He drove around various locations in Delhi, searching for a secluded place to commit the murder. Around 8 pm, they reached the Mukhmelpur-Hiranki Pushta Road, a deserted area. There, Shah allegedly shot Santosh in the head and set the body on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence before fleeing the scene. On the way, he disposed of the weapon and the inflammable bottle, both of which were later recovered by the police.
