Asking Bersatu to dissolve an outdated, irrelevant proposal, says Wan Saiful
Wan Saiful Wan Jan said dissolving and joining another might make sense for a small or insignificant party, but Bersatu is not small.
PETALING JAYA : Bersatu Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan has dismissed a proposal for the party to disband and reunite with Umno, describing it as outdated and irrelevant.
He said the current political landscape is marked by various parties forming coalitions and working together to form governments.
'If it's a small party, maybe it's appropriate to consider dissolution. But this suggestion came from Umno veterans, so it reflects a mindset that should have long been retired,' he said in a Facebook post.
Wan Saiful said Malaysia is in a new political era, with multiple parties forming coalitions and working together to form governments.
'That's the political reality today that may not be realised by those still stuck in the past,' he added.
He was responding to Umno Veterans Club secretary Mustapha Yaakub's call for Bersatu to dissolve and rejoin Umno, likening the move to Semangat 46's return to the party in the 1990s.
Mustapha's remarks came after Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin said the party was open to working with Umno because of their shared ideological values.
Wan Saiful, the MP for Tasek Gelugor, also claimed that Umno no longer holds the upper hand in national politics and is surviving mainly through the support of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
'We must remember, if not for party hopping and the scramble for government funds, Bersatu would still have more MPs in Parliament than Umno,' he said.

In the war of words between the two, Armizan said in his press conference on June 5, he clearly stated that his ministry was enforcing Ops Gasak under the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021 to combat the smuggling of subsidised liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), among others. "The MCA president was referring to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Act 2021. "It is of course impossible to find the legal provisions I was referring to because I mentioned 'A' but he was referring to 'Z'," he said in a Facebook post. Armizan said in 2021, the then-domestic trade and consumer affairs ministry drafted amendments to the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. "It was enforced on Oct 15, 2021, and at the same time, gazetted for public access," he said. Armizan said he was unfazed by Dr Wee accusing him as a liar but urged him not to confuse the people by quoting another law. Armizan also addressed Dr Wee's comments that he is a greenhorn MP, saying that even with lesser experience, he still respects the legal process. He had previously said this regulation was enforced during the former administration when Dr Wee served as a minister. Previously, Armizan had said Ops Gasak is being carried out under three existing laws – the Control of Supplies Act 1961, the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021. Earlier on Sunday, Dr Wee had said though he served as a minister in 2021, he was never involved in approving such regulations. "The government has the discretion to decide whether or not to enforce such policies," said Dr Wee. The Control of Supplies (Amendment) Regulations 2021, which came into force on Oct 15, 2021, limits the use of subsidised LPG to a maximum of 42kg at any one time for commercial purposes. Any shop exceeding this limit must obtain a permit and switch to non-subsidised LPG. On Thursday (June 5), Armizan said small and micro-scale food and beverage operators would be exempted from enforcement under Ops Gasak. Armizan said the Cabinet agreed to review the regulations on the use of subsidised LPG cylinders by such traders, after recommendations submitted by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry. Ops Gasak, which began on May 1 until Oct 31, is meant to curb illegal activities such as decanting (transferring gas from subsidised LPG cylinders to non-subsidised ones), smuggling and the misuse of subsidised LPG by medium and large-scale industrial sectors. Dr Wee had said the Ops Gasak should have focused on large-scale operations and at the borders and not on petty traders and hawkers.

Some truth to Malays feeling sidelined, says Umno veteran

PETALING JAYA : An Umno veteran says the unity government must look to regain the confidence of the Malays, following former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's latest effort to unite the Malays and 'restore their political power'. Former minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the government cannot avoid or ignore this movement as there was truth to the notion that the Malay community feels sidelined under the unity government. He added that Mahathir recognised this and was seeking to exploit it for his own political gain. 'Maybe it's merely a matter of perception or imagination (to some parties), but I think that there's truth to it (at the grassroots level). And something needs to be done to regain the confidence of the Malays. 'Whatever excuses we want to give, when you go to the grassroots, the reality is that many Malays feel sidelined, and Mahathir is exploiting that,' he told FMT. Raja Nong Chik claimed that, based on feedback he received, nine out of 10 of his close Malay peers have expressed concern about the fate of the community under the current administration. 'They worry for the future of the Malays, and these are highly-educated guys. We're not even talking about the grassroots level yet. 'However, this doesn't mean they will vote for the opposition just yet, it's just that they want some assurance (that the special privileges of the Malays would be safeguarded,' said the former Lembah Pantai Umno chief. The new Malay unity alliance was launched by Mahathir on Wednesday, with the backing of Perikatan Nasional's major components, PAS and Bersatu, as well as several Malay-based NGOs and academics. I paid for haj trip using my own savings, says Nurul Izzah
KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Izzah Anwar has clarified that her pilgrimage to Makkah was self-funded. In a Facebook post, the PKR deputy president and former Permatang Pauh member of parliament, who is currently performing the haj, said all travel arrangements, including accommodation and transportation, were organised by licensed travel agency Mimm Travel. She said that she and her husband, Yin Shao Loong, flew on a commercial flight and paid for the trip using their personal savings. "Praise be to Allah, my husband and I were granted the opportunity to perform the haj as guests of Allah SWT through a mujamalah (courtesy) visa. "There was no private jet, as falsely alleged. "Our journey was like that of millions of other pilgrims." Nurul Izzah also expressed concern over the slanderous content. She said if something untrue is spread, it must be corrected. "In our differing views and political struggles, let us not turn acts of worship into material for slander or accusation. "Let us all focus on goodwill and prayers for one another and hope that Muslims will be granted the opportunity to perform the haj with ease and sincerity." Nurul Izzah also shared that while in Madinah, she and her husband attended a religious session with prominent Islamic scholars including Sheikh Dr Omar Suleiman, Dr Tahir Wyatt, and Ustaz Dr Mohd Amirul Hassan Ahmaf Tajuddin – an experience she described as deeply moving.
