Boeing plane lands back in China for delivery as tariff war eases

Al Arabiya7 hours ago

A new Boeing 737 MAX landed back in China on Monday, flight tracking data showed, a sign the US planemaker was resuming deliveries to Chinese customers as Beijing and Washington ease their tariff war.
Boeing, which halted deliveries of new planes to China in April as the world's two largest economies ramped up tariffs on each other, said at the end of May deliveries would resume in June after the tariffs were temporarily scaled back for 90 days.
The plane, painted in the livery of Xiamen Airlines, landed at Boeing's Zhoushan completion center near China's commercial hub of Shanghai, after leaving Seattle on Saturday, and halting to refuel in Hawaii and Guam as it crossed the Pacific.
Data from tracking app Flightradar24 shows Boeing had originally ferried the craft to Zhoushan in March, before its return to the United States in mid-April, when Chinese airlines stopped taking new Boeing aircraft.
Boeing, Xiamen Airlines and regulator the Civil Aviation Authority of China (CAAC) did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
China represents about 10 percent of Boeing's commercial backlog and is an important and growing aviation market.
Representatives of China and the United States will meet in London on Monday to discuss a trade deal.
At least three 737 MAX jets were repatriated by Boeing to the United States in April from Zhoushan, where they were to receive final touches before delivery to Chinese carriers. The first to return was the same one that landed on Monday.
Boeing has previously said customers in China would not take delivery of new planes due to tariffs, and it was looking to resell potentially dozens of aircraft.
However, the planemaker had not sent the planes elsewhere, despite wanting to cut inventory.
Beijing has not commented on why Boeing deliveries stopped, but said Chinese airlines and Boeing had been severely affected by US-imposed tariffs.
In April, Boeing said it had planned for 50 jets to go to Chinese carriers during the rest of the year, with 41 in production or pre-built.

New Karachi-based private airline receives license, plans launch with three aircraft

KARACHI: A new private airline based in Karachi received its Regular Public Transport (RPT) license from Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) last week, one of its key stakeholders confirmed on Monday, expressing hope the carrier would begin operations soon. Air Karachi, spearheaded by prominent business leaders from Pakistan's southern port city, is modeled after the success of Air Sial, another airline launched by industrialists in Sialkot. The idea, conceived amid growing challenges faced by the country's national carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), is to develop a business-backed airline that can operate with efficiency and financial autonomy. 'Yes, we got the license from CAA,' Hanif Gohar, one of the airline's shareholders, told Arab News. 'We are looking for aircraft and will start with three aircraft soon.' Gohar said Air Karachi was issued the RPT license by the CAA on June 5. According to a copy of the approval letter seen by Arab News, the airline has been directed to deposit a license issuance fee of Rs500,000 ($1,750) and a security deposit of Rs100 million ($350,000). It must also raise its paid-up capital to Rs600 million ($2.1 million) before commencing operations, in line with the National Aviation Policy 2023. Air Karachi has been registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and plans to raise Rs5 billion ($17.5 million) by pooling Rs50 million ($175,000) from each of its 100 shareholders. Last year, Gohar told Arab News the response from Karachi's business community was so overwhelming that some families proposed contributing as multiple shareholders. He informed that aviation veteran Air Vice Marshal (r) Imran Qadir had been appointed chief operating officer of the airline, supported by a team of retired Pakistan Air Force officials. Once operational, Air Karachi will begin domestic flights with three aircraft and later expand its fleet to seven before launching international flights to the Middle East after the mandatory one-year domestic run.

Saudi carrier flynas to expand operations across 4 hubs, official says

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's low-cost carrier flynas is set to expand operations across its four main hubs — Riyadh, Jeddah, Madinah, and Dammam — as part of an ambitious growth plan, according to a top official. In an interview with Al-Eqtisadiah, Waleed Ahmed, the company's official spokesperson, said that flynas holds the largest aircraft order in the Kingdom and one of the biggest in the Middle East, with a total of 280 aircraft set to be received. This follows a major deal signed in July with Airbus to acquire 160 new aircraft — including 30 wide-body A330neo and 130 single-aisle jets across A320neo, A321neo, and A321LR models. The airline has seen a sharp rise in passenger traffic, with volumes climbing from around 11 million in 2023 to more than 14.7 million in 2024, reflecting the low-cost carrier's rapid expansion in line with Saudi Arabia's push to position itself as a leading global hub for tourism and business. 'These numbers reinforce the company's role in supporting Vision 2030, which aims to increase the number of passengers to 330 million and attract more than 150 million international passengers by that year.' Ahmed said, as quoted by Al-Eqtisadiah. He also highlighted that, as part of its ambitious strategic plan, flynas has expanded its summer schedule by launching four new destinations for the first time: Krakow in Poland, Geneva in Switzerland, Milan in Italy, and Rize in Turkiye, in addition to its usual summer routes. Last week, flynas finalized its initial public offering at SR80 ($21) per share — the top of its indicated price range — following strong demand from both institutional and retail investors. The pricing values the airline at an estimated market capitalization of SR13.6 billion at listing. The offering followed the company's announcement last month of its intention to float 30 percent of its share capital on the Saudi Exchange, making flynas the first airline in the Kingdom to go public and the first Gulf airline IPO in nearly two decades. In line with its ongoing fleet expansion, flynas recently took delivery of its fourth Airbus A320neo of 2025, bringing the total number of A320neo aircraft in its all-Airbus fleet to 57. The current fleet includes 63 aircraft — 57 A320neo, four A320ceo, and two A330neo wide-body jets.

China's Car Sales Rise in May, but Price Wars Cloud Outlook

China's car sales rose for a fourth consecutive month in May, but slower increases across major automakers highlighted concerns over aggressive price competition in the world's largest auto market. Sales grew 13.9% from a year earlier to 1.96 million vehicles last month, slowing from 14.8% growth in April, China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) data showed on Monday. Sales of electric vehicles and hybrids rose 28.2% year on year, down from a 33.9% gain in April. Leading EV maker BYD reported decelerating annual passenger vehicle sales growth to 14.1% last month from April's 19.4% despite a new round of subsidies and incentives late in the month. Other major automakers, including Geely and Chery, also reported slower growth as the industry's attention shifted to price wars that have raised concern over a potential market shakeout. Authorities have warned that such price wars threaten the industry's long-term health, with the sentiments echoed by leading manufacturers such as BYD, Chery and Xiaomi. The CPCA's secretary-general, Cui Dongshu, said the industry should focus on quality and technology innovation and that leading automakers should lower their sales targets for this year. CPCA data also showed that car exports rebounded, rising 13.5% year on year in May, reversing a 2% decline in April.
